Tanzania Travel Guide for U.S. Citizens: October Visit

Overview
Tanzania, known for its stunning landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and rich culture, offers a wide array of experiences for travelers. From the iconic Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater to the pristine beaches of Zanzibar, October is an excellent time to visit. During this month, Tanzania enjoys dry weather, making it a perfect time for safaris and outdoor activities. However, as with any international journey, there are some important travel considerations, including visa requirements, vaccination recommendations, and general tips to ensure your trip is safe and enjoyable.

Visa Requirements for U.S. Citizens

U.S. citizens are required to have a visa to enter Tanzania. There are several ways to obtain a visa:

  • Visa on Arrival
U.S. citizens can obtain a visa upon arrival at major airports and border crossings in Tanzania, such as Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Dar es Salaam. The visa is typically valid for a stay of up to 90 days. The visa fee is approximately $100 for a single-entry visa, and it’s advisable to carry U.S. dollars in cash for payment, as credit card payments may not always be accepted. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry and has at least one blank page for the visa stamp.
  • E-Visa
Alternatively, U.S. citizens can apply for a visa online through Tanzania's official e-visa portal. This option allows you to apply in advance and receive approval prior to travel. It's recommended to apply at least two weeks before your departure. The e-visa application involves submitting your personal details, a scanned copy of your passport, and a passport-sized photo. Upon approval, you’ll receive an electronic visa, which you can print out to present upon arrival in Tanzania.
  • Multiple Entry Visa
If you plan to visit Tanzania more than once during the same year, a multiple-entry visa might be more suitable. This can also be obtained on arrival or through the e-visa system.

Vaccination Requirements and Health Tips

Before traveling to Tanzania, it's essential to ensure you are up to date on recommended vaccinations. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) offer the following guidelines for travelers visiting Tanzania in October:

  • Yellow Fever
Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission. If you are coming from the U.S., this is not a requirement unless you've traveled to a country with yellow fever outbreaks before entering Tanzania. Even if not required, the CDC recommends getting the yellow fever vaccination for those planning to travel to certain rural areas, including safari destinations.
  • Routine Vaccinations
Ensure you are up to date on routine vaccines, such as:
    • Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR)
    • Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Pertussis (DTP)
    • Polio
    • Influenza (Flu)
  • Hepatitis A & B
Hepatitis A is recommended for all travelers, as it can be contracted through contaminated food or water. Hepatitis B is recommended for those who might have close contact with local people or healthcare providers.
  • Typhoid Fever
Typhoid vaccination is advised for travelers staying in rural areas or planning to visit small towns where sanitation may be an issue.
  • Malaria Prevention
Malaria is a risk in Tanzania, especially in rural areas and during the rainy season. The risk is higher in coastal areas, the Serengeti, and the Zanzibar Islands. Take prescription antimalarial medications before, during, and after your trip, as recommended by your healthcare provider. Additionally, use insect repellent (with at least 30% DEET) and wear long-sleeved clothing in the evening to reduce the risk of bites.
  • Other Health Considerations
Carry medication for upset stomachs and diarrhea (e.g., Pepto-Bismol or Imodium). If you plan to trek to higher altitudes, such as Mount Kilimanjaro, prepare for altitude sickness by acclimatizing properly.

Travel Tips and Suggestions for U.S. Citizens Visiting Tanzania in October

  • Weather and Packing
October in Tanzania falls within the dry season, with warm temperatures, low humidity, and clear skies. It’s an ideal time for safaris and outdoor activities. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing for the day, but bring warm layers for early mornings and evenings, which can be chilly. Neutral-colored clothing (earth tones) is best for safaris to blend into the environment and avoid attracting insects. Sturdy walking shoes or safari boots are essential for game drives and hikes. Sandals or flip-flops are useful for beach days.
  • Currency and Payments
The currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS). However, U.S. dollars are widely accepted, especially in tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry some local currency for smaller purchases or tips. Credit cards are not always accepted in remote areas, so carry cash. ATMs are available in larger cities like Arusha and Dar es Salaam but may not be found in more rural regions.
  • Safety and Security
Tanzania is generally safe for tourists, but it’s always a good idea to exercise caution, particularly in large cities. Avoid walking around at night in unfamiliar areas, and be mindful of your belongings. While on safari, always listen to your guide’s instructions. Wildlife is unpredictable, and safety protocols must be followed closely to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Respect the Local Culture
Tanzanians are friendly and welcoming, but it’s important to show respect for local customs and traditions. Always ask before taking photos of people, particularly in rural villages. Tipping is appreciated for services such as guides, drivers, hotel staff, and restaurant workers. Standard tips range from $10 to $20 per day for a guide, and $1 to $5 per service for hotel staff.
  • Local Transportation
Tanzania is a large country, so domestic flights between major safari destinations (like the Serengeti and Zanzibar) are common and often the quickest way to travel. Many lodges and camps arrange private flights. For safaris, you’ll likely be traveling by 4x4 vehicle with a professional driver. Roads can be bumpy and dusty, especially in rural areas, so prepare for a rugged experience.
  • Water and Food
Always drink bottled or purified water to avoid waterborne diseases. Avoid ice in drinks unless it’s made from bottled water. Tanzania offers delicious cuisine, with staples like nyama choma (grilled meat), ugali (cornmeal), and fresh seafood. Be sure to try local dishes but exercise caution with street food if you’re sensitive to new foods.

Conclusion

A trip to Tanzania in October is an unforgettable experience, with its vibrant wildlife, stunning landscapes, and incredible beaches. By preparing in advance with the right vaccinations, securing your visa, and following travel tips, you can ensure a smooth and safe journey. Whether you're on a thrilling safari in the Serengeti, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, or relaxing on the beaches of Zanzibar, Tanzania will leave you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Important Packing Tips for Tanzania in October:

  • Layering: Even though October is a dry month, temperatures can fluctuate between hot and cold. Layering is key for comfort, especially during early morning safari drives when temperatures are cooler.
  • Lightweight & Quick-Drying Clothes: Lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen are perfect for staying cool and comfortable, especially in Zanzibar. Avoid heavy fabrics, as the heat and humidity can make them uncomfortable.
  • Neutral Colors for Safari: Stick to earth tones like olive, beige, and brown for safari outings to blend in with the surroundings and avoid attracting insects.
  • Pack Light: Tanzania’s safaris often require light aircraft travel between destinations, which may have strict weight limits for luggage. A soft-sided duffel bag is usually recommended over hard-shell luggage.

By packing smart and ensuring you have everything you need for both safaris and Zanzibar’s beaches, you’ll be set to enjoy your unforgettable 11-day adventure in Tanzania!

This was our second Walker Wellness national park trip and it did not disappoint. The itinerary was exactly the right mix of activity and relaxation for us. The house was attractive and comfortable with plenty of time to enjoy its own spectacular scenery. Zion and Bryce Canyon were equally, and uniquely, beautiful. Our chef, Wendy, made sure we wanted for nothing and her meals were all interesting and delicious. Amanda was a great facilitator and driver and we enjoyed getting to know Amy and Bryan as well. They handled every challenge (inevitable with a group contending with nature’s vagaries) with aplomb. We are looking forward to our next Walker Wellness adventure!

We’re so glad the retreat struck the right balance of activity and downtime—and that you had time to soak in the beauty of both the home and the parks. Huge thanks for the kind words about Wendy, Amanda, and the whole crew. We truly value your trust and can’t wait to welcome you on your next Walker Wellness adventure!
