Packing List

Packing Essentials for Your Unforgettable Two-Week Adventure in Vietnam and Cambodia

Southeast Asian countries promise a treasure trove of experiences, from exploring ancient temples to savoring delectable street food. But before you set off on this unforgettable voyage, let's ensure you're well-prepared with the essential items to pack.

1. Lightweight Clothing and Comfortable Footwear: Vietnam and Cambodia are known for their tropical climates, so pack lightweight, breathable clothing to stay cool and comfortable. Cotton shirts, shorts, and lightweight trousers are ideal. Don't forget to include a swimsuit for beach days or a dip in the hotel pool. Comfortable footwear, such as sturdy sandals or walking shoes, are essential for exploring temples, markets, and city streets.

2. Sun Protection: The sun can be intense in Southeast Asia, so come prepared with sun protection essentials. Pack a wide-brimmed hat or a cap, sunglasses with UV protection, and high-SPF sunscreen to shield yourself from harmful UV rays.

3. Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes are prevalent in tropical regions, so ensure you pack insect repellent containing DEET or other effective ingredients. This will help protect you from mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever and malaria.

4. Lightweight Daypack: A lightweight daypack is invaluable for carrying essentials during day trips and excursions. Choose one with padded straps for comfort and enough room to carry water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, and your camera.

5. Travel Adapter and Power Bank: Vietnam and Cambodia typically use Type A, C, and G electrical outlets, so be sure to pack a universal travel adapter to charge your electronic devices. Additionally, a portable power bank will ensure your devices stay charged while you're out exploring, especially if you plan to take lots of photos or use navigation apps.

6. Travel Documents and Currency: Ensure you have all necessary travel documents, including your passport, visa (if required), travel insurance details, and any printed reservations or itineraries. It's also wise to carry some local currency (Vietnamese Dong for Vietnam and Cambodian Riel for Cambodia) for small purchases and transportation.

7. Lightweight Rain Gear: While Vietnam and Cambodia are generally hot and humid, they also experience occasional rain showers, especially during the wet season. Pack a lightweight, compact rain jacket or poncho to stay dry during unexpected downpours.

8. Medications and First-Aid Kit: Bring along any essential medications you may need during your trip, as well as a basic first-aid kit containing items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and diarrhea medication. It's always better to be prepared for minor health issues while traveling.

9. Respectful Attire for Temples: When visiting temples and religious sites, it's important to dress respectfully. Pack lightweight, modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, such as a long skirt or trousers, and a shawl or scarf to cover your shoulders if needed.

10. Reusable Water Bottle: Stay hydrated throughout your journey by carrying a reusable water bottle. Opt for a bottle with a built-in filter if you're concerned about the quality of tap water, or simply purchase bottled water from reputable vendors.

With these essential items packed and ready to go, you're well-equipped to embark on an unforgettable adventure through Vietnam and Cambodia. Prepare to immerse yourself in the rich history, breathtaking landscapes, and warm hospitality of these captivating destinations. Safe travels, and may your journey be filled with memorable experiences and discoveries at every turn!

  • Yoga mat and any props you may need.

Visa Requirements

Navigating Visa Requirements for Vietnam and Cambodia

Before we pack our bags and set foot on Southeast Asian soil, let’s delve into the essential information about visa requirements for US citizens.

Vietnam: Land of Timeless Beauty

Our first stop is Vietnam, a country steeped in history, adorned with breathtaking landscapes, and bustling with energy. But before we can immerse ourselves in the wonders of Hanoi’s ancient streets or the serene beauty of Ha Long Bay, we must attend to the matter of visas.

In recent years, obtaining a visa to Vietnam has become more convenient for US citizens. There are primarily two options to consider: the traditional visa through the Vietnamese embassy or consulate or the increasingly popular e-Visa option.

  1. Traditional Visa: To acquire a traditional visa, you’ll need to visit the nearest Vietnamese embassy or consulate. The process typically involves filling out an application form, providing passport photos, and paying the requisite fee. Processing times may vary, so it’s advisable to apply well in advance of your travel dates.
  2. E-Visa: Alternatively, US citizens can opt for the e-Visa, an electronic visa that can be obtained online without the need to visit a consulate or embassy. The application process is straightforward and can be completed through the official Vietnamese government website. Once approved, you’ll receive your e-Visa via email, which you’ll need to print out and present upon arrival in Vietnam.

It’s important to note that visa requirements and fees may vary depending on the purpose and duration of your visit, so be sure to check the latest information on the official Vietnamese government website or consult with your travel advisor.

Cambodia: Kingdom of Wonder

Next on our itinerary is Cambodia, a land adorned with ancient temples, lush jungles, and a rich tapestry of culture and history. But before we lose ourselves in the mystique of Angkor Wat or the tranquility of the Cambodian countryside, let’s explore the visa requirements for US citizens.

  1. Tourist Visa: For most US citizens visiting Cambodia for tourism purposes, obtaining a tourist visa is a straightforward process. Upon arrival at major airports such as Phnom Penh or Siem Reap, travelers can apply for a tourist visa on arrival. You’ll need to fill out an application form, provide a passport-sized photo, and pay the visa fee in US dollars. Once processed, you’ll receive your visa, allowing you to explore this enchanting kingdom for up to 30 days.
  2. E-Visa: Similar to Vietnam, Cambodia also offers an e-Visa option for US citizens. The application process can be completed online through the official Cambodian government website. Once approved, you’ll receive your e-visa via email, which you’ll need to print out and present upon arrival in Cambodia.

As with any travel documentation, it’s crucial to ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and that you have the necessary funds for your journey.

Conclusion

With visa requirements demystified, we stand on the threshold of a grand adventure, ready to explore the wonders of Vietnam and Cambodia. From the bustling streets of Hanoi to the ancient temples of Angkor, these enchanting lands beckon us with their beauty and history.

So, fellow travelers, arm yourselves with knowledge, pack your bags, and prepare for an unforgettable journey through the heart of Southeast Asia. The world awaits, and the adventure begins now!

Travel Safety Tips

Embarking on a journey to Vietnam and Cambodia promises a tapestry of vibrant cultures, ancient wonders, and breathtaking landscapes. However, like any travel destination, safety remains a paramount concern. From bustling city streets to serene countryside retreats, understanding how to navigate these Southeast Asian gems safely enhances the richness of your experience. Here's a comprehensive guide to ensure your travels are both adventurous and secure.

Pre-Trip Preparations

  • Documentation: Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. Secure necessary visas for both countries and keep printed and digital copies of all essential documents.

  • Travel Insurance: Invest in comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, theft, and natural disasters.

  • Research: Learn about local customs, traditions, currency exchange, and regional safety concerns. Knowing a few basic phrases in Vietnamese and Khmer can go a long way.

Health and Hygiene

  • Vaccinations: Consult your healthcare provider 4–6 weeks before travel. Commonly recommended vaccines include:

    • Hepatitis A and B

    • Typhoid

    • Japanese Encephalitis (especially for rural stays)

    • Tetanus and routine immunizations

  • Food and Water Safety: Stick to cooked foods and avoid raw produce unless you can peel it. Drink only bottled or filtered water—avoid ice cubes unless you're sure of the source.

  • Mosquito Protection: Use insect repellent with DEET or Picaridin, wear long sleeves at dawn and dusk, and consider sleeping under a mosquito net if staying in rural areas.

Transportation Tips

  • Use Licensed Services: Choose reputable taxi companies or rideshare apps like Grab. For tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis, agree on a price before the ride.

  • Traffic Awareness: Traffic in urban areas can be intense and unpredictable. Always look both ways before crossing, and walk defensively.

  • Motorbike Safety: If you rent a motorbike, wear a helmet, carry an international driving permit, and drive cautiously—especially in unfamiliar or rural areas.

Accommodation Choices

  • Secure Lodging: Opt for well-reviewed accommodations with secure locks, safes, and 24/7 reception. Read recent traveler reviews for red flags.

  • Know Emergency Contacts: Take note of your country’s embassy or consulate, local emergency numbers, and the nearest hospital or clinic.

Cultural Sensitivity

  • Respect Traditions: Be mindful of religious practices, especially at temples and pagodas. Avoid touching monks or pointing your feet at sacred objects.

  • Dress Modestly: Cover shoulders and knees when visiting religious or rural sites. Always remove shoes before entering a temple.

  • Photography Etiquette: Always ask permission before photographing locals, especially in rural or religious settings.

Street Smart Strategies

  • Avoid Scams: Stay vigilant against common scams such as overpriced taxis, rigged currency exchanges, and unauthorized tour guides.

  • Pickpocketing Prevention: Use anti-theft bags, keep valuables out of sight, and avoid keeping wallets or phones in back pockets.

  • Safe Currency Exchange: Use banks or official exchange counters. Avoid street vendors offering unusually good rates.

Petty Crime Awareness

Petty crime can occur in both countries, especially in high-traffic tourist zones. Here’s how to stay protected:

  • Hotspots for Theft: Be extra cautious in markets, beaches, tourist attractions, transportation hubs, and during festivals or public holidays.

  • Secure Your Valuables: Use hotel safes and keep digital backups of travel documents. Carry only what you need for the day.

  • Avoid Flashy Displays: Leave expensive jewelry at home and dress to blend in rather than stand out.

  • Smart Bag Management: Use crossbody bags worn in front. Don’t hang bags on the backs of chairs or leave them unattended, even momentarily.

  • Stay Alert at ATMs: Choose indoor ATMs at banks when possible. Shield your PIN and be wary of anyone loitering nearby.

Conclusion

Exploring Vietnam and Cambodia unveils a world of unparalleled beauty, rich history, and warm hospitality. By prioritizing safety and staying aware of your surroundings, you can enjoy a worry-free adventure through Southeast Asia’s most captivating destinations. Pack your sense of adventure, embrace the culture, and let the journey enrich your soul. Safe travels and happy exploring!

Exploring Vietnam and Cambodia: A Weather Adventure in April

Welcome, fellow adventurers, to a journey through the vibrant lands of Vietnam and Cambodia, where April unfolds its unique tapestry of weather, blending warmth, occasional showers, and lush greenery. As we embark on this expedition, let's delve into the nuances of weather in these captivating Southeast Asian countries, promising an unforgettable experience for every traveler.

Vietnam:

Our expedition commences in Vietnam, a country blessed with diverse landscapes, rich history, and delectable cuisine. April marks the beginning of the transition from dry to wet season in many parts of Vietnam, offering a mix of climates across the regions.

Hanoi:

In the capital city of Hanoi, April brings mild temperatures and a refreshing breeze, making it an ideal time to explore its ancient temples, bustling markets, and serene lakes. While occasional showers may grace the city, they only add to the charm, inviting you to wander through its labyrinthine streets adorned with blooming flowers and vibrant greenery.

Halong Bay:

Venturing to the breathtaking Halong Bay, April offers pleasant weather for cruising amidst its iconic limestone karsts and emerald waters. The occasional drizzle adds a mystical allure to the landscape, shrouding the towering cliffs in ethereal mist and creating an atmosphere of serene beauty.

Hue and Hoi An:

Further south, the historic cities of Hue and Hoi An beckon with their ancient charm and architectural wonders. April showers bring relief from the tropical heat, allowing you to explore the imperial citadel of Hue and wander through the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An without the sweltering humidity of the summer months.

Ho Chi Minh City:

In the bustling metropolis of Ho Chi Minh City, April heralds the onset of the rainy season, with brief afternoon showers providing respite from the heat. Embrace the tropical downpours as an opportunity to sample the city's culinary delights, from flavorful street food to sumptuous pho, or delve into its fascinating history at the War Remnants Museum.

Cambodia:

Crossing the border into Cambodia, our journey continues amidst ancient temples, verdant landscapes, and the warm hospitality of its people. April brings rising temperatures and increasing humidity, signaling the approach of the wet season yet offering a myriad of experiences for intrepid travelers.

Siem Reap:

At the heart of Cambodia lies Siem Reap, the gateway to the magnificent Angkor Wat complex. April brings scorching temperatures and occasional thunderstorms, but don't let the weather deter you from exploring these awe-inspiring ruins. My friends and I had the best time visiting Zion and Bryce Canyon! The accommodations were beautiful. We enjoyed the wrap-around deck views, relaxing in the hot tub after hiking, and the star-gazing was phenomenal! Alle was a very knowledgeable yoga instructor who did a great job of guiding us through stretches and flows to prepare us for hiking and address any aches and pains afterwards. The concierge service and direction she provided in the parks was a fabulous and worry-free way to travel. Our chef, Amber, completely spoiled us with her delicious, healthy cooking to fuel our hikes and her desserts were off the charts! Thanks for taking such good care of us :) It was fun to meet like-minded yogis and nature lovers from across the country!
By Molly B for Zion National Park Hiking & Yoga on May 01, 2025
I was amazed by the care and kindness by everyone involved. My room was amazing. Loved the hot tub. The views and the walks were breathtaking. A personal chef, come on. A Yoga instructor, come on. The car ride was more than I expected getting to and from the cabin. Other than that, I had the best time. Highly recommend visiting! (Oh, bring an analog watch.)
By Christina A for Zion National Park Hiking & Yoga (Jessica Posillico) on Apr 24, 2025
Thank you, Christina! We’re so glad you felt the care and kindness from our team—it’s exactly what we hope every guest experiences. From the views and hikes to the hot tub and chef-prepared meals (yes, come on! 😄), we’re thrilled it all came together for a trip you’ll remember. And love the analog watch tip—we might need to add that to our packing list! Hope to see you again on another retreat soon.

This was an 11/10 experience for me as a retreat co-host with Walker Wellness and as a human experiencing this retreat. Each day, excursion, meal, and yoga journey topped the former. I'm still riding a high of gratitude from this soul cleansing & peace centering trip! Thank you, Walker Wellness team for this life imprinting experience! If you are a retreat host looking to partner with a team of EXPERTS - Walker Wellness is it.
