Day 1: Into the Andean Wilderness

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from Riobamba to the trailhead at Hacienda Releche, where you’ll meet your guide and fellow trekkers. The journey starts with a steady climb through lush valleys and páramo, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of Sangay National Park. As you ascend, the landscape transforms into a rugged, high-altitude wilderness with sweeping views of El Altar’s jagged ridgeline. By evening, you'll reach Italian Camp, a remote and stunning campsite nestled at 4,000 meters (13,120 feet). Enjoy a warm meal and take in the clear Andean sky, filled with stars.

Day 2: Exploring the Alpine Heights

Wake up to the crisp mountain air and breathtaking sunrise over El Altar’s snow-capped peaks. Today’s trek takes you deeper into the volcanic cirque, crossing rugged terrain and glacial valleys. As you climb, you'll pass high-altitude lakes and get panoramic views of the crumbling volcanic walls of El Altar. The final ascent leads to a stunning viewpoint at 4,400 meters (14,435 feet), offering an unforgettable perspective of the glacial remnants and hidden lagoons below. After soaking in the beauty of this isolated Andean wonder, return to Italian Camp for a well-deserved meal and a night of rest under the stars.

As you approach the end of the trail, reflect on the incredible experience of trekking one of Ecuador’s most challenging and rewarding routes. Once at the trailhead, bid farewell to your guides and fellow adventurers before heading back to Riobamba, carrying memories of this unforgettable alpine expedition.
