What you can't reduce, you can offset!
Fundación Amazonía Productiva gives you the option to mitigate or offset your unavoidable carbon footprint by planting trees.
Planting, forestation, and reforestation help to generate oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere. The more trees we plant, the more we mitigate greenhouse gases, e.g., one hectare of new forest fixes about 4 tons of CO2 per year, while an established forest is about twice as much.
We are currently planting trees in the province of Loja, in the south of Ecuador. This area has suffered over the years from serious deforestation problems, where six principal causes have been the conversion of forests into areas for crops or livestock and forest fires.
The Foundation promotes a program to plant trees of native species in each sector of influence, where these trees have disappeared or are in danger of disappearing due to indiscriminate logging. The lack of people's conviction to renew their forests, together with the lack of adequate knowledge of how to collect and reproduce seeds, makes it difficult to care for, maintain and preserve them. For all these reasons, FAP collects and propagates forest species seeds and fruit trees native to the intervention area, sowing them and thus increasing the vegetation cover in the affected areas.
The adopt a tree project implies the continuous care of the native and endemic species that contribute to the regeneration of both the soil and the forests. All this work is carried out with the help of the communities in the affected areas, providing them with an opportunity for economic income, so the positive impact is not only environmental but also social.
Each tree planted has a cost of $20, which is designated for the collection of seeds, germination, and cultivation in a nursery, as well as the transfer, replanting, and care of each tree. As mentioned above, this work is carried out by people from the surrounding communities for the sole purpose of boosting their economy.
