South Downs Adventure: Day One

🗓️ Overview

Date: Saturday 31st October 2026
Meet The Crew: 08:30 | Amberley Train Station
Hike Start: 09:00 sharp
Distance: 27km | ~800ft elevation | 8–9 hours including breaks
Difficulty: Moderate
Route: Circular
Finish: ~17:00 at the accommodation

🕙 Detailed Schedule

08:30 | Meet The Crew at Amberley Station

Meet us outside Amberley Station, meet the crew and get ready for a big day on the trails. We'll have a quick briefing before setting off.

You'll also be able to leave anything you don't need for the hike (including your Halloween costume!) in a car that will be taken to the accommodation, so you don't have to carry it all day.

09:00 | Hit the Trails

Time to get moving! We'll head out from Amberley and take on 27km of beautiful South Downs trails, with plenty of time to stop, refuel and enjoy the views along the way.

~13:00 | Picnic Lunch Stop

We'll stop somewhere scenic for a relaxed picnic lunch and a chance to refuel for the second half of the hike. Bring your own packed lunch for the first day.

~17:30 | Bunkhouse, Showers & Fancy Dress

Back at the accommodation, it's time to ditch the walking gear, grab a shower and get into your Halloween outfits. There'll be welcome drinks and snacks waiting for you before we get ready for our Halloween evening and The Waypoint Spook Games...

Timings are approximate and may shift slightly depending on how the hike goes.

Halloween Evening 🎃

After a big day on the trails, we'll head back to our fully decorated function room and get into the Halloween spirit. Think firepits, drinks, fancy dress and a proper feast - exactly what you'll want after 27km on your feet.

~18:30 | Dinner

We'll have a pizza van coming to the accommodation, serving up a freshly cooked pizza feast followed by dessert, with options to suit all dietary requirements. Nothing too spooky on the plate - just good, hearty food to refuel after a big day of hiking.

Fancy dress is strongly encouraged. We're leaning into a witchy theme for the evening - yes, witches of all genders, but you can dress however you like. Go spooky, silly, ridiculous or somewhere in between.

We'll have plenty of beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks provided throughout the evening. If you'd like anything else, feel free to bring it along - you can leave extra drinks in the car when we meet at the station.

The Waypoint Spook Games 👻

Once we've eaten, it's time for some healthy competition. We'll split into teams and battle it out across a series of seriously unserious Halloween games. Expect a mixture of skill, speed, teamwork and completely chaotic challenges, with points up for grabs throughout the evening.

There will be drinks. There will be games. There will be some questionable Halloween outfits. And yes, there will be winners - for both the games and best dressed.

Bring your competitive spirit, your best Halloween outfit and prepare to defend your team's honour.

Just to set expectations, this isn't a full-blown Halloween party! After 27km on the trails, we're expecting everyone will be ready for good food, a few drinks, questionable fancy dress and plenty of laughs - especially with another day of hiking ahead.

And if we're still going, there's a countryside pub just across the road if we fancy before calling it a night.

Recommended Kit List

For the Hike

  • Walking Boots: Waterproof, supportive, and well broken-in. Boots are strongly recommended over trainers for muddy, uneven mountain terrain.

  • 20L Rucksack: Large enough to carry your hiking essentials each day. Keep it light - you’ll be carrying it for two full days, so only bring what you need.

  • Waterproof Jacket & Trousers: Essential, whatever the forecast. Mountain weather can change quickly.

  • Head Torch: Requited in case of delays or low light conditions.

  • Hiking Clothes / Activewear: Wear breathable, quick-drying layers (avoid cotton and denim).

  • Warm Layers: Fleece or mid-layer, insulated jacket, hat, gloves, and buff. Conditions can feel much colder on exposed peaks.

  • Water Bottles: Carry at least 1.5 litres each day.

  • Packed Lunch & Snacks: You’ll be making your packed lunches each morning using the supplied food. Bring plenty of high-energy snacks such as flapjacks, nuts, chocolate, or sweets.

  • Power Bank: Useful for keeping your phone charged throughout the day.

  • Dry Bags: To protect your kit and electronics from rain.

  • Hiking Poles: Helpful for steep descents and reducing impact on tired legs.

  • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, sunscreen, and a cap (weather dependent).

  • Personal Medication & Blister Kit: Including any medication you need, blister plasters, and basic first aid supplies.

  • Toilet Paper & Personal Hygiene Items: Please bring zip-lock bags to pack out any used items and follow Leave No Trace principles.

  • Camera / GoPro (optional): For capturing the adventure!

For the Accommodation

  • Halloween Outfit: Fancy dress is strongly encouraged. We're leaning into a witchy theme for the evening - yes, witches of all genders - but you can dress however you like. Go spooky, silly, ridiculous or somewhere in between.

  • Comfortable Clothes / Pyjamas: For relaxing after the Halloween evening.

  • Toiletries – Toothbrush, toothpaste, shower essentials. Towels are provided.

  • Flip Flops / Sliders: Great for relaxing after a long day in walking boots.

  • Phone Charger

  • Earplugs / Eye Mask (optional) – Shared rooms can be noisy!

  • Snacks & Drinks (optional): If you’d like anything extra alongside the provided meals.

  • Small Overnight Bag: If you don’t want to use your hiking rucksack for your bunkhouse belongings.

  • Spending Money: For drinks or extras during the weekend.
