About this trip

Over the course of my life I’ve been fortunate to travel both within and outside the United States. Those travels have given me many rich experiences: learning about others’ cultures and world views; coming to understand the universal language of compassion and love; building my resilience and ability to meet and overcome unknowns and obstacles. And although each destination, each person along the way, left a unique imprint within my heart, there has been no place that has touched my soul and changed my way of being with myself and in the world as much as my time in India. For me, this voyage is about returning to the hOMe of my heart.

Won’t you come home with me?

Weaving together a tapestry of cultures, spiritual beliefs, architectural styles and diverse landscape, India will forever touch your heart and move your soul. India celebrates one of the oldest civilizations of the world with a mosaic of deep traditions, tantalizing the senses with a complexity, dynamic beauty and profundity that will forever leave you in her embrace.

Are you ready to breathe in India’s extraordinary magic and breathe out conventional ways of being?

Experience wanderlust for your own inner landscape as we journey India together. We will traverse north and south, discovering through yoga practices, local rituals, and cultural tours the ways in which the full beauty of life is reflected in human nature. We will grow in awareness and openness as we experience India’s soulful spirituality and her raw and honest approach to living and being. Our seeking will lead us home.

Is it time to recapture your true north?

Our journey will begin in the holy city of Varanasi, known as the City of Light and birthplace of Shiva and Yoga. In Varanasi, we will take in the sights, sounds, and rituals of its soulful people and the sacred Mother Ganga (Ganges River), where Pilgrims travel to wash away their sins and Hindus hope to become liberated from the cycles of life and death. Our strolls though the world’s oldest inhabited maze-like streets capture our hearts as we lean into the city’s mystical energies and learn about the history and traditions of this holy place. The City of Light transfixes our attention while widening our awareness; we witness as life dances with both ends of the spectrum, its powerful pulse igniting our innermost flames.

Following four nights in Varanasi, we fly south to Kerala, to a serene coastal setting outlined by the Arabian Sea and glistening lake backwaters. Our first stop leads us to Kochi, the Queen of the Caribbean Sea and the point where India and China meet, providing an intriguing mix of religions, cultural influences, flavors and experiences. Here we explore the inter-play of nature and life as we more fully sense the threads that connect us together. Our final stop takes us via bus to Kumarakom, where our last two nights offer time for integration, rejuvenation and blissful peace on the shores of beautiful Vembanad Lake at a resort and spa amidst an unhurried backwater village.

Say no more. I am coming hOMe!

Traveling to India

Coming & Going

Our India voyage begins in Varanasi, India. From the USA, you can travel to India via Europe or the Middle East. Once in India, you will take a connecting flight through either Mumbai (Bombay) or Delhi to get to Varanasi (VNS). Our time together ends in Kochi, India so your return flight will be from Kochi (COK) back to your origin city. Sample flights might be:

Option 1 - via Europe

Arrival: USA ->  Mumbai (BOM) -> Varanasi (VNS)

Departure: Kochi (COK) -> Mumbai (BOM) -> USA

Option 2 - via Middle East

Arrival: USA -> Middle East -> Mumbai (BOM) -> Varanasi ( VNS)

Departure: Kochi (COK) -> Middle East -> USA

for Middle East, choose either Emirates via Dubai or Quatar Airways via Doha or Ethihad via Abu Dhabi

IMPORTANT note: When booking your travel arrangements take into consideration the time difference (India is 10.5 hours ahead of Eastern USA) in addition to the travel time. You will also need to go through passport and visa check upon first entry to India.

To arrive in Varanasi on the trip start date of Feb 4, you will likely book your departure for Feb 2. If possible, we recommend arriving to India 2-3 days before the start of the retreat in Varanasi, in order to ensure no delays to your arrival in Varanasi and to recuperate from travel before we convene.

For your departure plans, you will need to leave Kumarakom approximately five (5) hours prior to your flight departure time. From the resort you will travel by bus to Kochi airport (approximately 1.5 hours) and you should arrive to the airport three hours before departure.

Still a little weirded out contemplating all the logistics? No fret! We will hold a travel information session for all participants this spring! You will be supported through the whole process.

Please note: Arrival and departure windows for the airports will be provided for ground transportation following your registration. You must arrive and depart at the noted destinations within a specific time window in order to take advantage of the airport transportation included with your package.

Travel Documents

India requires both a passport and a travel visa for entry. You can check out this link for more information on visa requirements and applying. If you'd prefer not to go it alone, you can also use a service such as Travel Visa Pro for a nominal fee.

You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Check out the CDC website and consult with your primary care physician for recommendations on vaccinations for your travel to India.

What else do I need to know and bring?

Before we embark on our time together in India we will have two travel information sessions to talk about the 'good to knows' and 'need to bring' in order to support you having the most enjoyable and safest trip. In addition, registrants will receive a travel package with the top recommendations to navigate your travel needs in India. Check out the FAQs page for more information that you may find handy.

When should I place my deposit for this trip?

It is strongly recommend that you place a deposit to secure your space on this trip as soon as possible. Given the complexity of this journey there are multiple reservations which require significant advanced booking and financial commitments. These are made on your behalf (space permitting) as soon as you place your deposit. These types of reservations include but are not limited to: multiple hotel bookings, airline ticket, bus transportation, and more. We will do everything we can to confirm all necessary reservations and permits however, we can not guarantee these arrangements without advanced booking and deposits.

What airports do I fly into and out of?

Your arrival destination is Varanasi (VNS) and your departure city is Kumarakom (COK). You can access India via Europe or the Middle East and are likely to connect both directions either through Mumbai (Bombay) or Delhi.

Do I need a visa for India?

Yes! India requires both a passport and a travel visa for entry. You can check out this link for more information on visa requirements and applying. If you'd prefer not to go it alone, you can use a service such as Travel Visa Pro for a nominal fee.

Do I need travel insurance?

Yes! The purchase of travel insurance is required for this trip to ensure you are covered should any unexpected event arise. A personal, political, environmental or weather-related incident or pre-existing or unexpected medical condition may prevent or interrupt your travels. These events are rare but do occur and underscore the importance of being covered by travel insurance. There is a wide spectrum of policies and options so make sure you are clear on what is covered in the policy you are selecting.

What vaccinations do I need?

India does not require vaccinations for entry; however all people should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Check out the CDC website and consult with your primary care physician for recommendations on vaccinations for your travel to India.

What kind of yoga are we doing? Can anyone do it?

All yoga classes are all-inclusive no matter how long you've been doing yoga. Even better, this trip is led by a Certified Yoga Therapist, so classes will meet the needs of each person regardless of age, limitations or conditions. The foundation for the classes is Tantra Hatha Yoga; we will practice pranayama (breath work), asana (posture), meditation and chanting.

What is the weather like there?

In Varanasi (north), the daytime temperatures are likely to average in the mid to high 70s with lows in the high 50s; in south India (Kochi and Kumarakom) daytimes are high 80s/low 90s, evening lows of mid-high 70s. Little rainfall in February in India as a whole.

Are gratuities included in my trip price?

Some are and some are not. For group activities, your gratuities are covered already (bus drivers, local tour guides and guides for sightseeing trips), Personal gratuities are not included (for things like room cleaning, dining & bar staff (non-included meals), bellhops/concierge, additional activities and services). Tips are an essential part of the economy in India and are greatly appreciated. Your trip packet will contain more recommendations on tipping amounts for your information.

Trip Terms & Conditions

*** June 2020: Due to COVID-19, the trip date has been moved to February 2022. As a result, trip  payment dates, pricing, and fees may vary slightly for anyone NOT registered for the trip prior to the pandemic. All trip information will be updated in January 2021 and registration will re-open to the general public for new registrations at that time. You may sign up for the waitlist if you are not already registered and wish to reserve your space in Jan 2021. ***

Please take the time to read and understand the Terms & Conditions detailed below prior to booking your trip. If you decide to book the trip, your deposit is consent and agreement to these Terms & Conditions. You will be required to agree to these terms in order to complete your booking.

1. Your Deposit is Your Contract

When you make your $1000 non-refundable deposit you will be deemed to have agreed to these Terms & Conditions. Your booking deposit, together with (a) these Terms & Conditions and (b) the trip details regarding the Welcome hOMe: Voyage to India as listed on the We Travel website will constitute a legally binding contract between you and the Tra Kirkpatrick (herein referred to as Retreat Leader). (Note: If you book a trip for multiple people traveling together, then all travelers in that booking will be deemed to have read and agreed to the Terms & Conditions, and to be parties to this Agreement.)

2. Deposit

In order to confirm your booking with us, you will be required to pay A NON-REFUNDABLE DEPOSIT of $1000 towards the total price of your trip. You must also provide a copy of the photo page(s) of your valid passport within 48 hours of your deposit and no later than February 15, 2020 (whichever is sooner). Your accommodations and airline reservations (Varanasi to Kochi) can not be reserved without this information per India regulations.

3. Payment Plan

June 2020: Due to COVID-19, the trip date has been moved to February 2022. As a result, trip  payment dates, pricing, payment dates, and fees may vary slightly for anyone NOT registered for the trip prior to the pandemic. All payments are being delayed until Jan 2021.

If you select a payment plan when you register for the trip, the balance due (package price minus $1000 non-refundable deposit) will be billed in three (3) remaining installments. The payment schedule shall be as follows:

2nd payment: due by April 24, 2020

3rd payment: due by July 24, 2020

final payment: due by September 25, 2020

If you book the trip between any of the payment dates above, your down payment (deposit) will be $1000 PLUS any amounts due for payment dates that have occurred before your registration date. (For example, if you book on Aug 1, your deposit will be $1000 plus 2nd and 3rd installment amounts; you must pay remaining balance in full by final payment date above.)

The system does not automatically charge your account. You are responsible for making the installments on or before the due dates. If any payment is not paid on or before the due date, we reserve the right to treat your booking as canceled, especially if you have not proactively communicated about your payment needs. See below Cancellation by Traveller. All bookings must be paid in full by September 25, 2020.

4. Passport, Visas and Other Travel Documents

For trips outside the U.S. (or your home country, if you are not a U.S. citizen), you must carry a valid passport. India requires that your passport be valid for at least 6 months beyond the duration of the trip and have two blank pages. Please make sure to research the applicable passport requirements for your country of citizenship and travel to India. You are also required to obtain an India Travel Visa. Use this link for more information on visa requirements and applying. If you'd prefer, you can use a service such as Travel Visa Pro for a nominal fee. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in possession of all such required travel documents for your trip. The Retreat Leader/host is not responsible if you are refused entry to India (or any layover country during travel) because you lack the correct travel documents.

5. Requests for Roommate (Shared Double)

If you are traveling solo and register for a “Shared Double” (roommate plan) rather than a “Private Single” the Retreat Leader will make efforts to pair solo travelers with a roommate in order to accommodate the request for the lower “double occupancy” (versus single occupancy) rate. However, if unable to match you with a roommate as of the due date for final payment, you will be responsible for the difference between the double and single occupancy rate. Any amounts due must be paid by the final payment due date. We encourage solo travelers in this scenario to enroll a friend, family member or fellow yogi to come along as the Retreat Leader can not and will not guarantee an enrollment to match your needs.

9. Cancellation by Retreat Leader

Retreat Leader reserves the right to cancel trip at any time if, due to natural disaster, political instability or other disruptions and/or events beyond leader’s control (“force majeure events”), the operating of the trip would be unsafe or otherwise unviable. The Retreat Leader has put much thought and time into creating a retreat experience that will be inspirational, educational, and engaging and will make every effort to deliver the retreat program as scheduled. However, as part of this Agreement you acknowledge and accept that circumstances may arise which result in changes to the listed itinerary. These changes may include, without limitation, delays and/or partial or complete changes in the following: the itinerary, frequency of yoga sessions, modes or quality of transportation, etc. You understand and agree that: (i) the Retreat Leader may make last-minute or on-site decisions to address changed circumstances, (ii) Retreat Leader does not guarantee conformity with any itineraries that have been published or furnished to you or any other participants, and (iii) Retreat Leader reserves the right to change the itinerary with or without notice to you. All yoga and excursions/activities are optional for all participants; however, there are no discounts or refunds for non-participation in any, part or all of the events.

11. Travel Insurance

The purchase of travel insurance is required for all participants. While the coverage provided by travel insurance varies based on the policy you purchase, as a general rule, this type of insurance may provide coverage for a variety of losses which a traveler may incur relating to a booking, including losses relating to trip cancellation, illness, injury, theft, lost or damaged property, etc.

Be aware that, except for the limited refund rights outlined above (Section 9) for various cancellation scenarios, each client is 100% responsible for any losses, penalties, fees or other financial consequences arising out of any booking or trip, or the cancellation or interruption of any booking or trip (including, by way of example, costs related to airline tickets and fees, passport fees, visa fees, medical expenses, etc.). For all of these reasons, purchase travel insurance promptly following your booking.

12. Photos, Video and Marketing

With respect to still photos and/or video footage from the trip which include(s) your image and/or name, you irrevocably grant the right to use those photos and/or footage for marketing and promotional purposes (including, without limitation, on a website, in advertisements, marketing materials and/or on social media platforms), on a royalty-free basis, throughout the world and in perpetuity.

13. Immunizations and Travel Advisories/Warnings

Each participant assumes full responsibility for verifying any requirements relating to and/or obtaining any immunizations which may be necessary or desirable for travel in India. Certain locations are remote and require additional travel time away from city centers and towns; as such, medical attention may not always be readily available or may be of inferior quality compared to what is available at home. Also, you may be visiting places where the political, cultural and geographical environment is very different than where you live, and in some cases, these differences may present increased risks and/or challenges. You acknowledge and agree that your decision to travel is made after having considered this information, and you expressly assume the personal risks involved with such travel.

You release the Retreat Leader from any and all claims, liabilities, losses, expenses, damages, demands, actions, causes of action, lawsuits or sums of money of any kind arising out of, by reason of, resulting from and/or related to any trip you may book and/or participate in; and you understand and acknowledge that you are fully responsible for and expressly assume any and all risks, whether known or unknown, in connection therewith.

17. Arbitration

You agree that any dispute relating to your booking, the Terms & Conditions, the Agreement or any other issues relating to your trip (including any claim you may wish to assert relating to or arising out of your trip) shall be referred to confidential and binding arbitration in Atlanta, GA, by arbitrator(s) and pursuant to rules of arbitration subject to the mutual agreement of the parties. If the parties cannot agree on the arbitrator(s) and/or the rules of arbitration, arbitration may be compelled by petition to any court of competent jurisdiction in Dekalb County, GA. Any arbitration award shall be rendered in writing and may be entered and shall be fully enforceable as a judgment in any court of competent jurisdiction. The parties expressly waive their right to trial, including trial by jury. Each party shall bear its own attorneys’ fees and costs.

As a certified yoga therapist and life coach, Tra’s teaching integrates yoga with positive psychology and behavior science to help empower people to recognize and shift unhealthy patterns. In her classes, Tra invites students to explore the ways in which they extrapolate meaning from their experiences and to cultivate a greater sense of freedom through self-understanding. Tra’s classes are infused with practical applications of yoga’s deeper teachings and explored through breath work, movement and postures, and meditation.
