Answering the Call of the Wild: A Journey to Peru’s Amazon Wildlife Rescue

In this Wilde Tracks collaborative mission, you’ll work alongside experienced veterinary and caretaker teams in a well-equipped jungle clinic, providing hands-on care to animals arriving from injuries, illegal wildlife confiscations, and orphaned situations. From primates to parrots and everything in between, each case offers a unique insight into the challenges of wildlife medicine and rehabilitation - no two days are ever the same.

A core part of your experience will be developing practical husbandry skills alongside knowledgeable local caretakers. You’ll learn how to observe and understand normal animal behaviour, support species-specific nutrition, and create effective enrichment - key components that underpin both veterinary treatment and long-term welfare. This holistic understanding is essential for anyone pursuing a career in veterinary or animal care industries, bridging the gap between clinical knowledge and real-world application.

Beyond the clinic, you’ll collaborate with a nearby zoo on animal health checks, rescues, and education initiatives, contributing to wider conservation efforts while gaining valuable field experience.

Step outside the sanctuary and into the local community with a visit to a nearby village, where you’ll assist with domestic animal care while experiencing authentic culture and meaningful connection. Explore the vibrant, bustling Belén Market - an eye-opening glimpse into daily Amazonian life, including the complex realities of the illegal wildlife trade.

And of course, no Amazon experience is complete without time on the river—head out on a pink river dolphin spotting excursion, surrounded by the raw beauty and biodiversity of the jungle.

This is a truly immersive, hands-on journey where conservation, culture, and clinical experience come together - preparing you with the skills, awareness, and perspective to make a real impact in the world of animal care.

Peru is a country of incredible biodiversity, vibrant cultures and breathtaking landscapes, stretching from the Pacific coast and dramatic Andes to the vast Amazon rainforest. Home to an extraordinary range of wildlife, including jaguars, spectacled bears, giant river otters, macaws, monkeys and hundreds of bird species, Peru is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. With ancient traditions, diverse communities and a rich cultural heritage shaped by Indigenous, Spanish and other influences, Peru offers a unique combination of nature, conservation, culture and adventure. From the spectacular peaks of the Andes to the incredible ecosystems of the Amazon, there is something remarkable around every corner.

This Wilde Tracks collaborative mission offers an immersive introduction to wildlife rehabilitation and conservation in the Peruvian Amazon. Working alongside experienced veterinary and caretaker teams, you’ll gain hands-on experience across clinical care, animal husbandry, conservation, community engagement and field activities. Every day brings new cases, species and opportunities to learn.

  • Wildlife Veterinary Care - Assist experienced veterinary teams in a well-equipped jungle clinic, supporting animals arriving from injuries, illegal wildlife confiscations and orphaned situations.

  • Wildlife Husbandry - Work alongside local caretakers to develop practical skills in daily animal care, including feeding, cleaning, observation and routine welfare checks.

  • Animal Behaviour & Enrichment - Learn to recognise normal species-specific behaviour and create appropriate enrichment to support physical and behavioural wellbeing.

  • Species-Specific Nutrition - Gain practical experience preparing and providing appropriate diets for a diverse range of rescued wildlife.

  • Wildlife Rehabilitation - See how rescued animals are cared for throughout their rehabilitation journey, from initial assessment and treatment through to ongoing recovery and welfare.

  • Zoo Collaboration - Collaborate with a nearby zoo on animal health checks, rescues and education initiatives, gaining insight into wider conservation and animal welfare efforts.

  • Domestic Animal Care - Visit a nearby community where you’ll assist with domestic animal care while learning more about local life and the relationship between communities and animals.

  • Illegal Wildlife Trade Awareness - Explore Belén Market and gain a deeper understanding of the realities and challenges surrounding the illegal wildlife trade in the Amazon.

  • Amazonian Culture & Community - Step beyond the sanctuary to experience local culture, communities and everyday life in the Peruvian Amazon.

  • Pink River Dolphin Excursion - Head out onto the Amazon waterways to spot pink river dolphins while experiencing the incredible biodiversity and landscapes of the jungle.

Accommodation

Stay on-site at the sanctuary, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Amazon. You’ll stay in shared rooms and experience the unique atmosphere of living alongside a working wildlife rehabilitation centre, with the sounds of the animals you’re caring for all around you.

Enjoy delicious, freshly prepared meals featuring local Peruvian and Amazonian cuisine, giving you the chance to experience the flavours and traditions of the region while sharing meals with your fellow conservation travellers.

Some of our trips require a minimum number of participants to run. In the unlikely event the minimum isn’t met, we’ll let you know no later than 60 days before departure. If you haven’t heard from us by then, your trip is good to go. To keep things flexible, we recommend booking your flight after this point or choosing a flexible ticket.

Wilde Tracks is a conservation organisation with a different approach to funding wildlife protection: our conservation work is funded through travel.

We work alongside wildlife veterinarians, conservation organisations, reserves, researchers and local communities around the world, helping fund vital work including veterinary interventions, wildlife monitoring and tracking, anti-poaching initiatives, research, habitat protection and community-led conservation.

Rather than relying on donations or traditional fundraising, the people who travel with Wilde Tracks help make this work possible. The money generated through our trips directly contributes to the conservation projects our guests may be part of, while also supporting important work continuing behind the scenes.
