Over the next eight days, you’ll be immersed in real-world conservation, working alongside a highly experienced wildlife veterinarian and field team in the Greater Kruger region. This is a hands-on journey into the complex, often emotional, and always vital work being done to protect South Africa’s wildlife.
Each day brings new adventures, fieldwork, and unforgettable encounters — here’s a taste of what’s in store:
🐾 Wildlife Veterinary Interventions
tep into the world of frontline conservation as you assist the wildlife vet and team with real, high-impact work that protects animals and preserves ecosystems. Depending on the needs of the moment, your involvement may include:
Rescuing snared animals, removing wire traps and helping treat injuries in the field
De-horning rhinos to prevent poaching
Relocating predators involved in human-wildlife conflict
Translocating game species to support genetic diversity and ecosystem health
🐍 Reptile Medicine & Handling
Spend a full day with a renowned reptile veterinarian, diving deep into the world of reptiles. Learn species-specific medical care, husbandry, and handling techniques — from pythons to tortoises.
🐕 Community Outreach & Domestic Animal Care
Participate in a day of community veterinary outreach, treating domestic dogs, cats, and livestock. This compassionate work prevents the spread of disease from domestic animals to wildlife and strengthens community ties to conservation.
🚙 Full-Day Game Drive in Kruger National Park
Enjoy a full-day safari in the iconic Kruger National Park, guided by a qualified expert. Track the Big Five, discover hidden gems of the park, and enjoy a scenic lunch inside the reserve.
🎯 Darting & Wildlife Immobilization Training
Receive expert training on wildlife darting, including a safety briefing, learning to dart from the ground, and — conditions permitting — from a helicopter. This essential skill is part of ethical wildlife management.
🧪 Wildlife Necropsy
If a carcass is available, join the vet team for a necropsy (animal autopsy). This is a powerful educational opportunity to understand causes of death, disease, and the anatomy of wildlife.
🦒 Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Visit
Spend half a day at a respected wildlife rehabilitation center, where you'll learn about the care, feeding, and eventual release of orphaned or injured animals — from baby antelope to raptors and primates.
🎓 Lectures, Mentorship & Ethical Game Capture
Throughout the week, enjoy daily informal lectures and dedicated Q&A sessions with the wildlife vet. Discuss everything from career paths in wildlife medicine to conservation ethics, field challenges, and species-specific game capture protocols.
🌍 More Than a Safari — This is Impact
This program is a unique balance of fieldwork, conservation science, and real-world impact. Whether you’re treating a wounded animal, relocating a rhino, or giving a puppy its first vaccine, every moment contributes to the larger goal of wildlife protection.
