Did you know that the Woodward Dream Cruise actually started as a small fundraiser to raise money for a soccer field in Ferndale, Michigan?

In August 1995, Nelson House and a group of volunteers looked to relive and recreate the nostalgic heydays of the 50s and 60s, when youth, music and Motor City steel roamed Woodward Avenue, America’s first highway. That year, 250,000 people participated—nearly ten times the number expected. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, the Woodward Dream Cruise is the world’s largest one-day automotive event, drawing 2 million people and 40,000 classic cars each year from around the globe—from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, Japan and the former Soviet Union. North American cruisers from California, Georgia, Canada and all points in between caravan to Metro Detroit to participate in what has become, for many, an annual rite of summer.

 As the birthplace of the Ford Model T car, the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant is recognized as one of the most significant automotive heritage sites in the world. 

 HISTORY

• The Ford Motor Company’s first purpose-built factory. Previously space was rented on Mack Ave.
• Ford Models B, C, F, K, N, R, S, and T were assembled here.
• The Ford Model T was developed here, introduced in 1908 as a 1909 model.
• The first 12,000 Model Ts were assembled here and shipped out by railroad.
• Ford Motor Company relocated to its new Highland Park Plant in 1910, selling the Piquette building to Studebaker in 1911.
• Studebaker used it for automobile production until 1933.
• The building was occupied by Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company and Cadillac Overall Company until purchased by Heritage Investment Company in 1989.
• It was sold in 2000 to the Model-T Automotive Heritage Complex, Inc., (doing business as) the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, that restored and now operates the historic site as a museum.

Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum

YAHM’s featured automotive stories are Chevrolet Corvair, Tucker, Hudson, Kaiser-Frazer, and General Motors Hydra-matic; all with Ypsilanti connections. Displays include Motor State which held patents on power convertible tops, the Ford Motor Company Generator Plant, and local car dealerships. As a thriving commercial and manufacturing hub, Ypsilanti had a significant influence on these pioneering companies and the men who built them. The Ypsilanti Automotive Heritage Museum preserves an important era in American history. The museum also hosts the National Hudson Motor Car Company Museum. 

 Edsel & Eleanor Ford House tells the story of the home life of a prominent American family. The Fords were cultural, social and economic leaders in an era of great optimism, as well as a turbulent time of economic depression and world war. They were nationally prominent and they owned more than one house, but Southeast Michigan was their home. Here they built their final residence along the shores of Lake St. Clair, at a place known locally as Gaukler Pointe. Their impressive yet unpretentious home is where they raised and nurtured their four children - Henry II, Benson, Josephine and William - in a safe and loving environment. It reflects their love of family as well as their mutual passion for art and quality design. 

The Stahls Automotive Foundation was created to build an appreciation for history. Our mission is to educate, motivate and inspire young people with a passion and appreciation for vintage vehicles and help them to understand their contribution to the development of the car industry as well as their impact on society, history and everyday life.

A visit to the Stahls Automotive Foundation will take you back to a time in history when cars were more than just a way to take us from point A to point B. Gain a better understanding of how the automobile developed from a novelty to a main form of transportation. In addition to the beautiful cars, enjoy the collection of gas pumps, road signs, oil cans and other car-related accessories from the Depression era.

 The ever expanding Gilmore Car Museum, hailed as one of the Top Five car museums in the nation, features over 250 extraordinary cars and motorcycles from all eras. Open daily year-round, exhibits range from cars of the 1890s to the classic Duesenberg, the elusive 1948 Tucker, to the muscle cars of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Visit a restored 1941 Silk City Diner, our very own George & Sally's Blue Moon Diner for something to eat. During the summer months guests can also explore the Museum's 90-acre park-like campus of historic buildings and take part in one of its many popular car shows.

 The Roush Automotive Collection, is a 30,000 sq. ft. private facility. Housed within the collection are a wide variety of displays, multi-media exhibits, artifacts, memorabilia and 110+ vehicles dedicated to the preservation of the heritage of Roush Enterprises. 

The LINGENFELTER Private Collection

 Born the son of a General Motors executive, Ken grew up with a lust and appreciation for stylish, high-performance automobiles. Finding success in the real estate settlement industry, Ken bought his first Corvette in 1977. Additional cars were acquired, as his passion for performance cars grew. Having sold his company, he has dedicated himself to assembling a collection of significant muscle cars, Corvettes, and exotic European cars from around the world.

In 2008, his passion for speed and excellence led him to purchase the assets of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, a company founded by his distant cousin John Lingenfelter. Many of Lingenfelter Performance Engineering products have been instrumental in establishing performance thresholds. The talented team at Lingenfelter Performance Engineering, as well as The Lingenfelter Collection, will continue to enhance the passion and create excitement among hot-rodders, racers and exotic car enthusiasts that reach far beyond their imagination.
