      Chinese Ink Painting

Chinese painting is one of the oldest artistic  traditions of China. Painting in the traditional  style, which is quite different from western  conceptions of art involves a similar style to  Calligraphy. This is done with a traditional  brush dipped into ink, and without western  oils. For your lesson we will be using a  traditional canvas, but often artists use silk and  paper. Chinese painting has historically represented  nature and people's relationship with the  natural world. The geography of China is  diverse -- including mountains, deserts and  forests -- and artists have depicted these scenes  in painting. Animals -- such as horses, fish,  birds and tigers -- are also frequent subjects in  Chinese painting.

      Sichuan Opera

Sichuan Opera originated at the end of  the Ming and the beginning of the Qing  Dynasty. With immigrants flooding  into Sichuan, different dramas were  brought in to blend with the local  dialect, customs, folk music and  dances. Gradually, brisk humorous  Sichuan Opera, reflecting Sichuan  culture, came into being. Theater director Chen has been  engaged in Sichuan Opera for 30 years.  Until 6 years ago, the "senior brothers  and sisters" who were studying  Sichuan Opera together were reunited.  In an abandoned restaurant on the  North Gate Bridge in Chengdu, he  began his reorganization of his opera  career. Later, due to urban planning  and construction, the theater had  changed scenes many times, but the  sound of Sichuan opera was never  interrupted. Due to the shortage of  staff, every teacher here has a variety  of talents: execution, scene, art,  costumes, makeup, outreach, drama,  including logistics, etc.

      Shaolin Kung-fu

Chinese Kungfu are several hundred fighting  styles that have developed over the centuries  in China. These fighting styles are often  classified according to common traits,  identified as "families" of martial arts.

      Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has long been regarded as a treasure of Chinese  traditional science and civilization. Combining healthy lifestyle cultivation, disease  prevention and fitness enhancement with the concept of harmonious coexistence of  human and nature, TCM is not only a complete theoretical system but also a culture  developed through the practice and exploration of Chinese people since ancient  times.

      Tea Ceremony

Tea plays an important role in some countries. It is commonly consumed at social  events, and many cultures have created intricate formal ceremonies for these  events. Afternoon tea is a British custom with widespread appeal. Tea  ceremonies, with their roots in the Chinese tea culture, differ among East Asian  countries, such as the Japanese or Korean versions. Tea may differ widely in  preparation, such as in Tibet. where the beverage is commonly brewed with salt  and butter. Tea may be drunk in small private gatherings (tea parties)or in public  (tea houses designed for social interaction).

      Traditional Chinese Dumpling Making

With a history of more than 1,800 years, dumpling is a classic lucky food for  Chinese people. Wrapping and then eating dumplings together is a Chinese  family tradition designed to bring happiness and prosperity to the family, as  dumplings look like ingots (元宝), the currency used in old times. Students  will learn from our chef Zhang Ayi how to make dumplings from scratch.

      Intro to Real-Deal Sichuan Cuisine

Sichuan cuisine is one of the eight Chinese cuisines popular in Sichuan and  Chongqing area, even globally and it has the largest market share in China. Sichuan  cuisine dishes are featured with hot, numbing, spicy and fish-flavor taste, colorful  appearance, abundant using of seasonings especially pepper and prickly ashes and  various cooking methods. Sichuan hot pot, Ma Po Tofu, Kung Pao Chicken, and  Sliced Pork in Hot Chili Oil are the famous and representative Sichuan cuisine  dishes.

The weather might be the reason of the popularity of hot peppers. In fact, hot peppers and Sichuan peppercorns are considered as the hearts of Sichuan cuisine.  There are lots of mountains in Sichuan province. And the unique terrain creates high  water content in air. People in this area needs to eat hot peppers and peppercorns for  dehumidify. During the period when hot peppers are not introduced, ginger and  other spices played the similar role.

This was a fantastic trip. It fulfilled the goals I had for students--they learned and felt what I wanted them to learn and feel. Claire and Dillian did an absolutely amazing job. They went above and beyond as local guides, and I was (and am still) grateful to them for all their hard work. I could rely on them for careful planning and for foreseeing any issues--they worked really hard to ensure a good experience for our kids. During meals, they were often on their feet, explaining dishes to students, making sure everyone was well-fed, and helping students to understand how to eat the various foods. Claire stayed up late when one of our students was injured to take her to the hospital and arrange so many of the logistics. It was a blessing to work with RealAsia on this trip.

My daughter had the most amazing time on this trip! She said that every day was "unforgettable" and came home with tons of photos and memories to share. The schedule was super busy each day, with visits to different cities/towns, and included lots of cultural and historical learning for the kids (and a lot of food!). I wouldn't hesitate to send her on another trip with RealAsia!

The trip to China was incredible. I learned so much! The tour guides were so kind and knowledgeable. The tours were well organized, the food was delicious, and there were no hiccups- everything was well thought out and planned ahead. The hotels we stayed in were clean and modern, with delicious breakfast every day. The activities planned helped us understand a lot about China, however I would have liked more activities around Chinese daily life and less visits to tourist attractions. For example, visiting a grocery store or market or pharmacy. Visiting the school was amazing because we got to speak with locals and build relationships, but I would have liked to see an actual class or how they eat lunch instead of separating us out. Overall it was an amazing experience.
