About this trip

"Conquer the wilderness with this 4-day trip on the Appalachian Trail in the beautiful Southern Nantahala Wilderness”

This trek is challenging, but also rewarding, traversing two 5,000-foot mountains on the Appalachian Trail in North Carolina. Along the way, you’ll enjoy open vistas, spend the night at backcountry trail shelters and experience the peace and solitude of life in the wilderness.

Don’t have a stockpile of backpacking gear or a head full of knowledge on how to survive in the backcountry? Not a problem. With the experience of WBA guides, our catalog of tried and tested gear and educational opportunities layered throughout the trip, you’ll feel like a backpacking pro in no time.

Where you will go

Imagine traveling to a place surrounded by majestic, mist-shrouded mountains everywhere you look. Sounds pretty great right?

During your trip with WBA, expect to rise each morning surrounded by lush forests, spend your days hiking up mountains and along ridgelines to enjoy impressive vistas, before ending the day at secluded backcountry campsites and shelters.

For 2021, WBA is hosting trips in North Carolina, in the southern Nantahala National Forest, along a 20 mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail between Standing Indian Mountain and Albert Mountain.

What you will need to bring along

To put it simply – not much.

We at World’s Best Adventures want to ignite your passion for the outdoors, whether you’re new to hiking and the outdoors or a seasoned backpacker. But we also know how daunting it can be to find the right gear, find the right trails, find the right group, and then actually get out and come back safe.

So let us do the heavy lifting.

Sign up for this trip and we’ll provide the biggest most expensive pieces of gear you’ll need; breakfast, dinners, snacks, drinks and goodies for the duration of the trip; and a slew of lessons on hiking and the outdoors from seasoned professionals.

You’ll bring yourself (duh), clothes, boots, a sleeping bag (which we can help you find or even provide for an additional cost), spork and a few other essentials.

See our packing list for a full list of gear.

What’s included

  • Lunch for four days
  • Dinner for three days
  • Snacks & drinks
  • Backpack
  • Tent
  • Sleeping pad
  • Headlamps

What’s not included

  • Sleeping bag
You'll need to bring a good down or synthetic backpacking sleeping bag rated for between 20-35 degrees. Pick one that fits your body and your budget. We are happy to make recomendations.
  • Long-handled spork
Many backpacker meals are freezedried and eaten from a foil pouch so a long-handled utensil, like a spork, make eating easier. If you aren't sure what to buy, we can point you in the right direction.
  • Cup
Not required, but makes morning coffee more enjoyable.
  • Boots
You'll need to bring your own boots or trail runners. If you don't already have a pair, head to your closest outdoor store and try a few pairs until you find some that feel good.
  • Clothing
You'll need to bring pants, shirts and wool hiking socks for four days. We suggest bringing lightweight wicking fabrics like wool and wickaway. Cotton clothing is not recomended.
  • Rain jacket
Rain is bound to happen at some point, so you'll need a good jacket to stay warm and dry. Jackets made with Gore-Tex and other waterproof materials are recomended.
  • Warm jacket
Fleece, wool or down jackets are required.
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Water bottles
Bring two 1 liter bottles. Nalgene botles and water resevoir bags also work.
  • Pocket knife
Something small and simple, for whittling and preparing food.
  • Lighter
Not required, but always handy to have on the trail. A simple Bic Lighter will do.
  • Trowel
  • Toilet paper
  • Toiletries
  • Sunscreen
  • Bug spray
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Medications
