Join award-winning authors Brendan Jones and Amy Butcher from May 29th through June 2nd, 2025, in Sitka, Alaska to deepen your writing and experience one of the world's last remaining pristine temperate rainforests.
In this all-inclusive retreat, you will be one of 12 writers engaged in creating content in intensive fiction and non-fiction classes. World-class chefs Edith Johnson and Renee Trafton will help cater meals, while Sitka Fine Arts will provide addition food and lodging. Alaska hot springs, raptor centers, sunset boat cruises and nature walks will all be included.
While visiting Sheet'ka Kwaan (Sitka) you will be introduced to indigenous Tlingit history and ways of life through conversations with respected Tlingit elders in our community. Tongass Mist Writing, Brendan Jones and Amy Butcher count it a privilege to live, work and share this incredible place as guests ourselves on Tlingit Aáni.
Spend mornings in intensive workshops, and afternoons writing or taking pre-arranged excursions. Explore this dynamic island town of 8,000 people, located in North America's largest temperate rainforest. Sitka is home to Alaska brown bears, eagles, sea otters, orcas, humpback whales, ravens, puffins, sea lions and many more creatures. Live on the edge of the crown jewel of the forest system, the Tongass, and experience firsthand "the lungs of North America."
At night enjoy your private and cozy lodgings in downtown homes or in campus housing. All lodging choices are just a few minutes' stroll from classes on campus (1/8 mile). We gather for meals at the Sitka Fine Arts Campus Cafe, or take a short walk to downtown Sitka fine dining and cafes.
Walk just one or two blocks to Sitka's historic sights, cafes and shops. You can also reach Sitka National Historic Park, most often referred to as "Totem Park," in just a few minutes by foot. Bikes, kayaks, paddle boards, and vehicles will be made available to writers for individual trips.

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS
Together, Amy and Brendan have been teaching in Sitka for over a decade. They know the community, and are eager to share their favorite haunts with you. Whether it be dinner on the porch at Ludvigs, or fresh scones at the Backdoor Cafe, or the off-the-menu S'Mores Calzone at Campfire pizza, they will make sure you get a local experience in town. This will include a boat trip to Goddard Hot Springs, a salmon bake on a nearby island, and wildlife sightseeing tours for whales, bears, and otters.
Amy Butcher is an essayist who explores and examines concepts of autonomy, legitimacy, believability, and value as they relate to and shape the lives of American women. Her most recent book, Mothertrucker (Little A, 2021), interrogates the realities of female fear, abusive relationships, and America’s quiet epidemic of intimate partner violence set against the geography of remote, northern Alaska.
