About this trip

Come explore the wild wonders of Northern Wyoming with Backcountry Yoga!

We are taking a journey deep into the backcountry of Yellowstone National Park where you can quite literally witness the Earth come alive.

We’ll spend 5 days & 4 nights backpacking from campsite to campsite, sleeping under the stars, learning backcountry cooking, camping, and more.
-Every morning we’ll start with yoga influenced movements and meditation.
-During the day we’ll explore new terrain with our camp on our backs.
-We’ll be greeted with wildflowers, rocky ledges, flowing rivers, and some animal friends too.
-In the evening we’ll cook and connect.

Why? Spending time in the woods, disconnected from the world does something that words just can’t explain. A beautiful intimacy between yourself and nature occurs that has a profound effect on the way you interact with the people by your side. It’s out there in the wilderness that you start to see a tiny glimmer of what astronauts witness from space... that we all reside on a living breathing planet filled with incredible mysteries and magic. It’s here that we can relearn ourselves so that we can contribute to the health of the world.

Once we head back to the front country we'll enjoy 3 days and 2 nights of comfy warm beds, showers and an opportunity to reflect on our time out in the wild. We'll spend a day exploring the iconic mountain town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming while getting incredible views of the Teton National Park!

Only 8 spots available due to permitting restrictions.

We love you all, but this particular retreat is not for the faint of heart. This is a real deal backcountry experience where you will get dirty, sweaty, and close to the earth.

And yes, you will poop outside in the woods... and to be honest it will likely be the best poop of your life.

Backpacking Details & Expectations

Approximate miles/day: 6 miles

Elevation Starting Point: Yellowstone sits at about 8,000 feet above sea level

Elevation Gain: 3073ft

Elevation Loss: 3054ft

While we all know that tourism is an important aspect of the outdoor industry, there is nothing better than exploring a national park away from the bustling crowds of people. Backpacking in Yellowstone is a way to do just that. We'll see some of the iconic features, but quickly escape into the serene silence of wildflowers and bison with sweeping mountain views.

This will be a true Backpacking experience that will test your physical and mental limits. We will not have access to front country amenities like running water, bathrooms, showers, electricity, or cell phone service. We will not have sherpas as guides ;) You will be expected to carry your share of group gear based on your physical size, in addition to your own pack. The weight of your backpack could range up to 40lbs or more (we'll try to be as lightweight as possible)

We will camp in groups of 2-3 sharing tents and collaboratively cooking backcountry meals. Come prepared to learn and you will have a wonderful time! ( If you're interested in a trip where the guide does everything for you, and you just enjoy the views, this is not the trip for you.)

To join this retreat you will need to be in peak physical shape, without any underlying injuries. Just because you aren't in your peak physical shape right now, doesn't mean we can't work together and get you on a workout plan leading up to our retreat. The best way to train for backpacking, is hiking up hill with weight!

When Nature Calls in the Backcountry

Incase you are still wondering... YES you will have to go to the bathroom outside! If this will be your first time digging a cat hole, please don't let it stress you out. Going #2 outside with a view is one of the more liberating human experiences you'll have in your life.

Take a moment to watch this video to learn everything you need to know about having a pleasant and proper backcountry poop... teehee we said it POOP POOP POOP!!!!!

Yoga Details

While yoga is often thought to be a physical practice of creating shapes with our bodies that stretch our muscles and work with our breath, we want to encourage you to consider the full picture of what yoga truly is.

"Yoga is a discipline to improve or develop one's inherent power in a balanced manner. It offers the means to attain complete self-realization." (The Ministry of AYUSH) In this framework our entire weekend is in fact a practice of yoga. From the moment we meet one another and set intentions, to the the first steps on the summit of a mountain we are practicing yoga.  This means, that while we will offer the asana (the physical practice of yoga) throughout the weekend, please remember that everything is subject to weather and trail conditions.  While our intention is to lead your through several full vinyasa, yin, and restorative practices, based on the variability of the outdoors our yoga class could range from a mat practice on the ground, to a standing practice with our boots on, or a stretch session in tents  followed by a deep meditation. Most of all every physical yoga session will be all levels so we invite all people to participate.

We appreciate your willingness to leave all expectations at the door and give into the flow of our weekend adventure!

Physical Training

We highly recommend that you start training now!

When hiking at elevation, your body is working a little harder to get the oxygen it needs, being in peak physical shape gives your body one less thing to have to compensate for.

Exercises we recommend:

-Ability to run 3 miles in 30 minutes, or run at a consistent pace for 60+ minutes

-Include hills in your running route

-Include sprints in your flat land running

-Hiking uphill ( you can run all you want on flat land, but it won't prepare your muscles for going up hill) If you're training inside try putting a treadmill on its maximum incline or use a stair-master.

-Weighted squats & Lunges ( Try loading up a backpack at home!)

-Step downs to strengthen muscles for descending

-High Intensity Interval training ( Increase your cardiovascular strength)

-Yoga for building mobility and balance

- Get used to wearing a heavy backpack ( Make sure you buckle it at your hips to take pressure off your shoulders)

We were very pleased with our resort accommodations and staff there were very helpful and friendly. The weather wasn't cooperating with our ski plans, but we made the best of it and were still able to ski the next day. We loved the participation in the yoga classes and thought it was the perfect amount of time and practice. We would definitely go on another Skiing Yoga Backcountry adventure again.

Had a great time! Laura varied the yoga classes with poses, music and flow. The timing of the events, along with free time to enjoy activities at the resort was well planned! I enjoyed meeting the other attendees and would definitely go back.
Grounding, Inspirational, filled with community & so easy to be apart of no matter where you came from.
This trip was exactly what I hoped it would be. THANKS to all of the work and the accommodations were awesome i hope to be able to take this trip again !!!!
It must be experienced to be explained. Incredible and highly recommended!

I loved the Backcountry Yoga 20 hr Outdoor Yoga Guide training so much. It was so good for my soul. Laura is a natural teacher who exudes so much wisdom from her personal experience and studies of yoga, nature, and science. I found this training to be a perfect balance of education, safety, creativity, nature, and spiritual teachings. It was such a gift to spend the weekend with Laura and the other yoga teachers in the group. I would highly recommend that anyone interested in bringing a group into nature for a yoga class or yoga hike attend this training,.
