I would not recommend Action Peru Treks because of the lack of communication I experienced with the founder, Roxner. I was leading a retreat with 15 people who I booked the Machu Picchu tour for. I paid the deposit, and the remaining amount was due to be paid 30 days before the trip (or in cash on the day of). I was unable to get a timely response regarding paying the remaining balance, despite sending many emails. I wasn't able to reach anyone at the business number. I actually had to research and find his personal phone number in order to speak to him. He eventually responded and sent me a link to pay the remaining balance a couple of days before I left. I had serous concerns, given the lack of communication, that the tour was not going to occur. Not what you want to be dealing with when you have 15 people who sent you money to go to Machu Picchu and join your retreat. The tour did happen, but I honestly wasn't sure if it was going to until the night before when Roxner sent me the tour guide's information (I had asked for it earlier, and he said he wouldn't give it to me). The lack of communication was completely unacceptable and caused a great deal of stress.

The Inca Trail is a beautiful varied trek with jungle, ruins and mountain views. It is a peaceful and in places challenging experience that we are so glad we did. We had the full range of weather from roasting sun to snow even in the dry season. Machu Picchu in contrast is a tourist trap full of people. Our chefs worked wonders every day.

Everything was well organised, all went smoothly and we learned a lot from Lino, our guide. He seemed to have a lot of experience and to know the ins and outs of every place. Also, the food prepared by Andres was simply amazing !! We had a lot of fun with the team, the visits were great and the views were splendid. Thanks Roxner for organising such a great trip for us!

This was a wonderful trip led by Christian and brilliantly supported by Albert and Jon (chefs) and Jose and Luis (horsemen). All of them worked hard to ensure our group ate (very) well, had tents assembled when we arrived, felt safe and had the best experience. I would particularly recommend this trip if you want to get away from the crowds and see amazing Andean views, including Choquequirao when there’s almost no one else there - a far cry from the Macchu Picchu experience. For the first 6 days (before it merges with the Salkantey route) you will meet the odd other trekker (even fewer after Choquequirao) but for the most part, both trekking and camping, you will just be with your group. An absolute highlight was camping on the inka terraces the night after Choquequirao. Absolutely breathtaking views. The first 6 days are pretty full on in terms of long days and ascent (and you are completely dependent on horses for porterage and the ‘medical mule’) so I agree it’s ‘challenging’ rating, but are absolutely glorious. After that it gets substantially easier. Huge thanks to Christian for all his guidance, including dealing with cancelled trains (caused by forest fires) and having to find alternative arrangements.
