We weren't sure what to expect, but in hindsight we can say with total confidence: this experience is the real deal. Every person we encountered went above and beyond, genuinely dedicated to ensuring our group had an incredible and authentic experience. Only caveat: It's nature! Sometimes you can get lucky, sometimes you're not seeing some animal that should actually be quite common. Don't expect too see anything and you'll be surprised how much there is to discover. And for the love of god bring long sleeves and use mosquito spray! Here's a list of what we saw: Mammals • Spider Monkey (Ateles chamek) • Howler Monkey (Alouatta seniculus) • White-fronted Capuchin (Cebus albifrons) • Dusky Titi Monkey (Plecturocebus cupreus) • Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri boliviensis) • Emperor Tamarin (Saguinus imperator) • Saddleback Tamarin (Leontocebus weddelli) • Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) • Puma (Puma concolor) • Tapir (Tapirus terrestris) • Capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) • Peccary (Tayassu pecari or Pecari tajacu) • Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus) • Long-nosed Bat (Rhynchonycteris naso) Birds • Scarlet Macaw (Ara macao) • Red-and-green Macaw (Ara chloropterus) • Chestnut-fronted Macaw (Ara severus) • Blue-and-yellow Macaw (Ara ararauna) • Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin) • Cobalt-winged Parakeet (Brotogeris cyanoptera) • Great Potoo (Nyctibius grandis) – Spelled "Patoo" in your list. • Fasciated Tiger Heron (Tigrisoma fasciatum) • Amazonian Oropendola (Psarocolius bifasciatus) • Andean Cock-of-the-rock (Rupicola peruvianus) • King Vulture (Sarcoramphus papa) • Horned Screamer (Anhima cornuta) • Neotropic Cormorant (Nannopterum brasilianum) • Anhinga (Snakebird) (Anhinga anhinga) • Kingfisher (Alcedinidae family) • Red-capped Cardinal (Paroaria gularis) • Blue-throated Piping-guan (Pipile cumanensis) • Masked Trogon (Trogon personatus) • Smooth-billed Ani (Crotophaga ani) • White-winged Swallow (Tachycineta albiventer) • Striated Heron (Butorides striata) • Sunbittern (Eurypyga helias) • Cocoi Heron (Ardea cocoi) • Wood Stork (Mycteria americana) Reptiles & Amphibians • Black Caiman (Melanosuchus niger) • Spectacled Caiman (Caiman crocodilus) • Suspicious Log (Lignum suspectum) • Yellow-spotted River Turtle (Podocnemis unifilis) • Rainbow Whiptail (Ameiva ameiva) • False Viper (Xenodon rabdocephalus) • Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobatidae family) • Cane Toad (Rhinella marina) Fish & Invertebrates • Bocachico (Prochilodus nigricans) • Stick Insect (Order: Phasmatodea) • Leaf Insect (Family: Phylliidae) • Tarantula (Family: Theraphosidae) • Yellow-banded Argiope (Argiope argentata) • Cicada (Family: Cicadidae) • Cricket (Family: Gryllidae) • Grasshopper (Order: Orthoptera) • Mosquito (Family: Culicidae)

Excellent 6D/5N excursion into the Manu Reserve. Went in “rainy season” to avoid the crowds and it paid off: there were only four of us on our tour and the only tourists in the park with only one partial day of rain. The river was so serene and beautiful. Sincere thanks to Rive who was an exceptional guide. He has over 20 years experience guiding, grew up and has a farm in the Manu region just outside the park and is an avid bushman so his knowledge of the fauna and flora and his ability to spot wildlife was exceptional. It was obvious when he shared his knowledge that he is passionate about his region. Although it was low season, we were still able to see tapirs, deer, macaws among many other birds, an ocelot, giant otters feeding and playing in the lake, a variety of monkeys, snakes, frogs, caiman and incredible flora. Rive also shared many cultural facts about the region. Loved the night hikes in the jungle (don’t forget DEET bug repellent!). The larges were rustic/basic but adequate. (Suggest bringing a travel pack of shampoo/conditioner and body wash). The food was excellent thanks to our chef Richard……three big meals per day whether cooked at the lodge, while travelling on the boat with us or brought to us on site at a viewing post. Very flavorful, fresh Peruvian cuisine. Snacks were provided mid morning and afternoon. Many thanks to Alex who navigated the roads to and from Cusco to where you start the boat travel….no easy task in rainy season with wash outs etc. It was a beautiful ride through the mountains in a very comfortable van. The boat ride along the Maidre de Dios into the beautiful Manu River and back was comfortable (reclining seats!) and super relaxing. Thanks to our boat crew for their hard work. For all of these reasons, it is without hesitation that I recommend Amazon Wildlife Peru for a Manu Reserve adventure.
