Wow, just WOW!! 🤩 I cannot even begin to express with words how mesmerizing this trip experience was. Days later, I am still processing the magic of it all. Calen’s dedication and sparkling personality are unmatched. Each day was filled with purpose, laughter, support, and chances to push past our comfort zones into a wild world of opportunity and new discoveries. The trip of a lifetime is an understatement! I view travel as a way to experience life, not escape it. Calen’s values align so beautifully with this sentiment! I feel that I could write a book about the past week. I highly recommend traveling with Calen! They are so wonderful and caring. This was my first experience with them, and I cannot wait until the next trip. My roommates were incredible, and authentic hugs were exchanged throughout the day. I had deep conversations with my roommates throughout the trip. Nothing is better than a late night porch chat. During the trip, I received a personal email that shook me a bit, but the entire group supported me and made me feel better. In the evening, we had Yoga Nidra with Calen. One of the mantras used was, “It’s safe to soften.” In this world, we develop strong walls to protect ourselves, but these trips are a place where it is safe to lower those guardrails to be vulnerable while having an enormous amount of fun. When we all went on a hike to the river, it was a bit muddy, and the group was mindful of everyone, making sure anyone who needed balance had a hand to hold. From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for the extra hands and for having my back (literally)!!! Seeing the sea turtles in nature left me in awe. I have been trying to find words to describe it, but I still come up short. The excursions are so much fun and carefully selected to add to the experience. In fact, I loved the farm so much that for several days I decided to just be present in nature and watch the waves. Book now! You won’t regret it!

This trip to Costa Rica was so much more than a vacation. It was one of those experiences that stays with you long after you've unpacked your bags. A huge part of what made the trip so special was Calen, the founder of Unruly Travel and our group leader. Calen has created something that feels very different from traditional group travel. There is so much intention behind the experience—not just in where you go and what you do, but in *how* you travel. From the beginning, Calen created an environment where I felt comfortable being myself. They have an incredible ability to bring people together while still allowing everyone the space to experience the trip in their own way. The group felt welcoming, inclusive, and genuine, and the connections that formed became one of my favorite parts of the entire experience. I especially appreciated how closely the values of the trip aligned with my own. Being able to travel in a way that was vegan, LGBTQ+ friendly, environmentally conscious, and centered around ethical interactions with animals made this experience incredibly special. I didn't have to constantly research whether there would be food I could eat, whether an animal activity was ethical, or whether I would feel comfortable being myself. Calen had already put that thought and care into the trip. And then there were the sea turtles. 🐢 Getting to participate in sea turtle conservation at Finca Ganadito was something I will never forget. Learning about the turtles, walking the beaches, seeing firsthand what goes into protecting their nests, and actually being part of that work gave me an entirely different appreciation for conservation. It wasn't an experience designed just so tourists could see wildlife—it felt like we were there to learn, contribute, and respect the work already being done. There were also so many smaller moments that made the week unforgettable: being immersed in nature, sharing meals, laughing with people who had started the week as strangers, learning from the people around us, getting dirty, being exhausted, and having conversations I probably never would have had in my everyday life. Calen did an amazing job of guiding all of that without making the trip feel overly scheduled or manufactured. They weren't simply leading us from one activity to another. They were part of the experience with us—sharing their knowledge, creating connection, encouraging curiosity, and making room for the unexpected moments that often became the best ones. I also came away with an even greater appreciation for Costa Rica and the idea of *pura vida*. By the end of the week, those words felt like more than something printed on souvenirs. They represented slowing down, being present, connecting with people and nature, and appreciating the life happening around you. I went to Costa Rica expecting an adventure and hoping to see sea turtles. I came home with friendships, stories, a deeper appreciation for conservation, a renewed connection with nature, and memories that I know I'll carry with me for years. If you're vegan, queer, passionate about animals or conservation, interested in more ethical ways of traveling—or simply looking for a group trip where you can show up exactly as you are—I can't recommend traveling with Calen and Unruly Travel enough. Absolutely loved the trip to Guatemala. There were a few hiccups with accommodation i.e. I had requested private rooms and ended up sharing more often that not and I personally didn't love two of the places we stayed at but that's more down to my personal preferences, I am a light sleeper and it was VERY loud etc. The trip was well organized in terms of the activities, the food was amazing and the group of people on the trip were really good people overall. I would travel again with Unruly for sure!
