Going on a safari trip was magical. Was able to see all types of wildlife and birds. The guides who drove were knowledgeable on tracking, finding the animals and telling us about their habitats. David and Carl, the photography guides were very helpful in pointing out how to get good shots no matter what type of camera you had….anywhere from iPhones to pro cameras with long lenses. The camping experience was so much better than I expected. And for a 71yo, I was comfortable. The food was good and the support staff were there to help out with anything that may be needed. I will have memories to last a lifetime.

This was my 2nd trip with David and the trip of a lifetime- having been with him before I felt safe as a single female going overseas for the first time and I wouldn't trust just anyone with that. Dave kept in constant contact with the group and with me as I traveled, step by step. During the trip, the photography guides were always ready to help and did mini lessons for us during the downtimes or helped with settings in the field. Undertaking this sort of trip with experts has been a great way to increase my own photography abilities. The safari experience was incredible and the local guides- Sam & Paul- taught us so much about the land, animals, and life in Botswana as well as having major bush voodoo for finding animals. The staff in camp spoiled us rotten and made the experience that much richer. Obviously being out in the wild, remote and isolated in the middle of Africa was an experience I will never forget but as a newbie to the photography world, I feel like I gained so much on that end too. By the end of my time with David and the 2nd photograhy guide Carl, I felt way more confident intentionally adjusting camera settings and understanding the foreign language photographers spout to each other about f-stops, exposures, depth of field and everything else. My understanding of how to create better images as well as work with weird lighting situations increased exponentially and I'm shocked by some of the images I was able to create. I look at the photos and think, I can't believe not only are they photos I took, I can't believe I was that close to hunting lions, or on the ground with elephants at sunset, or any number of things we saw and did. Highly recommend doing a trip with these guys, and can't wait to go back to Botswana- because I know I will- and am already debating which trip to do next.

I can’t think of words to describe the experience it was so magical. Lion cubs then tea, then Leopards, then expert tracker training on hyena tracks, wild dogs, birds galore, tea again, cheetah chasing a jackal, fresh bread, great dinner, gin and tonic, nice bed. Lather, rinse repeat. David puts you in the right spot at the right time in the right light, comfortably.

David W Shaw Photo Workshop Trip for the Arctic Aurora in Alaska was simply amazing! This has been on my bucket list for some time and this was my first visit to Alaska. Dave lived in Alaska for many years and so his knowledge of the area is incredible. He found us the best place to stay (picture postcard perfect cabins in Wiseman) and some excellent viewing areas where we were the only group in those spots - so not having to compete with anyone for a good viewing location or worry about light pollution. Thanks to Dave, I also got to go mushing - another awesome experience! This was a small group experience with 6 of us as guests, Dave providing the guidance we needed both in the field and with Lightroom photo editing. Robin, an accomplished watercolor artist and great cook, accompanied Dave and kept us well fed. The aurora did not disappoint - we had 3 consecutive evenings of amazing displays - just WOW! If you ever have the chance to join this trip - take it!

Dave's workshops are incredible! I did the Bears of Brooks last July and we saw them all over the park even though the salmon weren't running. Dave knows all the best spots/timing plus he's super knowledgeable about not only the bears but photography of course, the best of both worlds.. When we had a planned fly in from Homer canceled due to weather, Dave worked to find an alternative and we had a great experience boating in ridiculously close to bears out of Soldotna. Like in a rowboat 10 feet away on the water, an experience that even beats going to Brooks (alternative is flying in and being on the ground with them). You also get time in Homer where you do a marine cruise and see so many animals including puffin and otters- a unique trip. Dave takes care of everything, and tailors to the members of the group needs. Multiple times, a part of our group chose to go for a walk or an extra trip to lower river while waiting on the water taxi, while others waited at the lodge for us. Or, when we had to leave Brooks early one day, he offered a hike around the area or downtime-with a small group we had lots of options when we had downtime. He is also great at helping both advanced photographers and newbies like me get the most out of the experience. I cannot recommend him enough. I'm going to Africa with him next and wish I could just do his workshops all year long.
