This trip was fabulous. Every minute was full of great experiences (Mayan and Garifuna experiences that included food prep (using a metate to grind corn to make tortillas, and using a coconut spike and grinder to make coconut soup), intro to basket making, spice farm tour, hot sauce tasting (at least 30 flavorful samples), a visit to Mennonite land to see a special vulture, a tour, lunch and birding on a private nature reserve, a small family-owned chocolate farm with 2-room "factory" and a chocolate tasting with many samples (yum) followed by lunch, a visit to a Mayan women't cooperative to learn about their traditions and lives. Our leader David Rupp had everything perfectly planned and though he was a superb birder, he had hired the best bird guides in Belize to be with us night and day, and we had even more local bird guides for specific places like the river and nature preserve. Beautiful birds and a very congenial and interesting group of guests were of course as important as the many cultural experiences. My husband and I were making travel plans for this time next year and decided that if David offers the Northern Belize bird tour next year we're on it!
