It was an amazing trek, incredibly scenic and well organized. The food was good, and more than abundant! (There was more than enough - trout stuffed roll ups for lunch one day!). The only negatives were: - the guides (and companies) limited English; it was difficult to have any conversation with him, which extended to any clarification question of what he tried to tell us about any ruins, or directions, or simply whether we would need our passport for train entry, etc. I even emailed ahead of time to ask whether we would really actually need a winter coat and toque, which was provided in the essential packing list. The first response I received was that they advise wearing sunscreen and a hat! (I’m not kidding). I asked again, and they responded I should being a jacket for wind and rain. (As a rain jacket was also on the essential list so this did not help me). I ended up packing and bringing both the winter coat and toque (both of which are bulky) but only needing a T shirt the days we started hiking at 5;00am. It seems the required packing list was for the company, not the hike … ie the Inca trail reaches much higher altitude and requires different gear, yet the company cannot explain this ahead of time. - also, it rained one day for 3 hours. I think this is common. Yet the team did not set up the fly on the tent, so, everything touching the tent got wet, and the bottom of the tent was soaking, which got our mattress wet, the bag with my clothes, etc, etc. for the remaining 3 days, I was lugging around damp clothing which never dried and got my other clothes smelly and damp.

We chose the Lares trip for these reasons. It is not as crowded as the popular Inca trail. It is easier than the Salkantay trail. As a 66 year old, I was conscious of the challenges, and in retrospect it was the right decision. There were times when going uphill on day 2 especially that it was very challenging, but we all got through it. Also the fact that they used mules rather than people to transport our stuff was a plus, although I also realize that the local people get paid for their work. The Lares trip has beautiful scenic mountains, waterfalls, many lakes, small and large streams. Almost every stop was a picture taking opportunity. There is also a lot of variety. We spent time in a natural thermal spring, visited a salt mine, visited a local Quechua family, took part in a ritual at Condor pass (our highest point at 15.5 k feet), among others. If you want more than hiking, if you want to get to know the local culture, this may be a good fit. Trexperience is a great outfit. They are well organized, they communicate clearly before and during the trip, they are service oriented and know what it takes to make hikers happy. I would call our experience glamping because we had air mattresses, sleeping bags, trekking poles (all paid for) and also hot water packs, heavy alpaca blankets, pillow (free and unexpected luxuries in a cold tent). Perhaps the most important part of the experience was the people who went with us. Manolo, our guide, was outstanding. He was patient, explained a lot of the history/culture to us and was very upbeat. The tour he gave us at Machu Picchu was incredible, with plenty of picture taking opportunities. Rosalito, our chef, was also incredible. We never had the same dish twice, we had trout, chicken, beef, with many vegetables, and delicious soups. Primitivo, his assistant, was pleasant and helped in many ways. On day 3 he brought us water from camp when we ran out and was so flexible and kind. Our horseman Leandro was quiet but very efficient. They all worked well with each other and made sure we were taken care of. This was important because it was a challenging hike, it was cold at night, and all 3 of us had some kevel of nausea (even though we came to Cusco 2 days ahead of time). Overall, a trip of a lifetime. I can scratch this off my bucket list!

We rented a mat and sleeping bag (which comes with a fresh liner) and they were excellent. Would have no hesitation in recommending this company
