About Me

My name is Kayla Nielsen. I am the founder of Go Light Our World (GLOW), which is a non-profit organization that diminishes poverty with solar solutions. I am also the founder of Kindred Connections, a charitable organization serving mistreated animals around the world. I am currently implementing projects across Africa, Asia, and India. In addition to running GLOW and KC, I am also a traveling yoga teacher. My teaching styles & specialties are: dynamic vinyasa flows, arm balance & inversion workshops, back bending workshops, partner yoga therapeutics, yin, meditation & visualization. I am a dedicated Karma Yogi, in that the majority of my global retreats are fundraisers for GLOW's solar projects within impoverished communities . I am often found upside down, adventuring, or mermaiding somewhere around the world. I had an amazing time volunteering! It was a bit unorganized at times with pick ups and getting to the clinic, but that’s understandable for it being the first project. I loved staying at lotus shores. The yoga was fantastic, the food was amazing, and it was so peaceful. Everyone I met was so wonderful and made the whole experience even better. The volunteering aspect was so rewarding and I loved being able to be a part of such an amazing cause. Overall it was an amazing experience and I’m very greateful to have been a part of it! Thank you :)
Extremely grateful to have found this trip via Kayla and Kindred Connection, but this particular week was extremely unorganized...this was the feedback felt by other folks during the week as well. Mix-up with the volunteer dates: most people anticipated the project ending on October 31 (not the actual October 30) this can alter flights, accomodation, your deposit and balance due. Kindred Connection Street Dog (& Cat) majorly lacks monetary transparency. From volunteer sign up costs, money raised online, to local donations at registration desks - none of it is calculated and posted for transparency: this really confused me as I was chased and shamed for money after thoroughly communicating in advance my change in volunteering dates - there needs to be 100% transparency when running an NGO as this is the major issue with all of them globally. There wasn't much work to do when there wasn't a clinic day which can be frustrating for folks who show up really wanting to contribute. It wasn't specified in the description that there would be specific clinic days (the dates and village locations are organized on posters and advertised online and in the towns, so look out for them on instagram (@puppypuddlesiargao) and be sure to show up on and around the surgery clinic days) It seemed like more work could have been organized beforehand for volunteers during the days when the pop-up spay/neuter clinics were not active. There also isn't any mention on WeTravel of the two major animal foundations that Kindred Connection is partnering with locally - Philippine Pet Birth Control Center Foundation (the veterinarians from Manila) and Puppy Puddle Siargao. There isn't any wish list posted and if you ask via email in advance you're asked just to bring cash donation. If you are traveling from a developed country, it is very easy and cheap to bring crucial materials like; an animal specific shaving razor, surgery instruments, gauze, medical tape, surgery drapes and the like....even collars and leashes would really be useful to bring and donate as many locals do not have the money for leash and collar for their pets and it's MUCH safer to have these on the animals while they are waiting for surgery and when waking up after surgery. I spent most of my time with the doctors and was told they desperately need certain items as their tools rust & burn out quickly and are all usually donated second hand as they are expensive on these islands. Cash is spent for vaccines, syringes, veterinary flights, food etc. This was extremely frustrating to learn - i could have brought a lot of these items from NYC, if only a wish list was researched & prepared in advance! Lastly, although we sign a waiver with the risks involved, it should be reiterated in the WeTravel description and in email to have at minimum, your anti-rabies and tetanus shot vaccination up to date. The work is super risky even if you are comfortable working with animals in stressful situations. Much love, DZ

This trip was magical! Before this retreat I had practiced yoga maybe 4 hours my entire life. Kayla and Cait made me feel welcomed and confident. Through their empowering sessions I was able to push my body in ways I never thought possible. All of the women at the retreat were incredible. The atmosphere was one filled with love happiness and trust. I felt free to come as I was, shed parts of me that I no longer needed, and grow. This is a truly life changing experience that I have not stopped recommending to anyone who will listen. Kayla created a sanctuary where all were welcomed and no one left the same. I am already counting down until next year!
It was an amazing experience that is still impacting my life. I thought it was going to be hard for me because I had never before practiced yoga but Kayla and Cait were awesome. I didn't feel uncomfortable or that I wasn't doing what I was supposed to do, I felt free, doing my best on my own pace. I felt in peace, able to silent my thoughts for seconds for me was a huge accomplished. Connected with myself and with the girls in a way I never ever thought I could. I feel lighter, my heart does, my expectations of myself. Im so grateful with Kayla and Cait for this extraordinary experience, zero regrets! Thanks so much for be dedicated to help so many women to heal, to love themselves.

Amazing! Kayla was so helpful and welcoming the entire time. Based on the itinerary I wasn’t sure if there were enough planned activities but once we were there, the environment was so relaxed and friendly that there was always some activity to join. I also loved getting to hear Kayla’s work through GLOW. I highly recommend this retreat to anyone wanting fun and relaxation.

My retreat with GLOW in Portugal was incredible! I went into this experience with zero expectations and left feeling fulfilled and so inspired. From the very beginning, Kayla was clear that this was OUR time...She was flexible with the schedule, which made every day comfortable and stress-free. Kayla herself is an amazing teacher/human and made the retreat feel effortless! Her fellow teachers Rivka and Sarah and her photographer Annie added so much great energy and light to the week! (Seriously...Such a great group of females!) So, if you've been thinking about going on one of Kayla's retreats... DO IT. I can honestly say this is one of those life changing, soul lifting experiences that I will forever be grateful for. Can't wait for the next one!
