We had a wonderful time at SEGA! There was opportunity to meet inspiring students, graduate entrepreneurs, and current college scholars. We also connected with representatives from the Modern Girl Program and had the privilege of seeing the program in action during a visit to a local primary school. My brother Dr. John Morris taught a math class and students seem to enjoy his class. The visit was very enjoyable. The food in the guest area was very good. Warm showers would have been nice.

Myranda James was our primary contact for “Summit for SEGA: Climb Kilimanjaro, Support Scholarships!” She provided resources that helped us quickly create individual fundraising pages on the Nurturing Minds Summit for SEGA website. She also offered helpful suggestions for building and maintaining our fundraising momentum. Early in the process, Myranda arranged Zoom calls that gave committed and prospective climbers the opportunity to ask questions and properly prepare for the Mount Kilimanjaro climb. She also distributed a pre-departure manual containing critical information about the medications, climbing gear, and clothing we would need. In addition, Myranda coordinated our airport pickup in Tanzania, local transportation, and train tickets to the SEGA Girls’ School in Morogoro. She planned a detailed four-day itinerary that introduced us to SEGA’s leadership team, communications staff, volunteers, and interns. I especially appreciated the opportunity to teach a math class at the school on a topic with which the girls were already familiar. When I later learned that one of the students had been inspired by my presentation to pursue the study of mathematics, it made the entire trip worthwhile. We also spent several days exploring the surrounding communities, meeting SEGA graduates, and seeing them succeed in their new business roles. Witnessing firsthand how education has given these young women confidence, determination, and opportunities for a better future was incredibly rewarding. As the first-ever “Summit for SEGA” climb, this event provided a strong foundation for the future. Although just a few of us participated as fundraising hikers, our successful climb demonstrated that this can be an exciting and meaningful way to support SEGA. We hope our experience will inspire more hikers to join future climbs and help make Summit for SEGA an increasingly successful fundraising event.
