I knew I was going to Chile to trek the Patagonia “O” Circuit, but I had no idea I was about to experience the trip of a lifetime. It would have been impossible to anticipate the fun, adventure, and education that awaited us. From the moment we arrived and met our guide, Cristian, and his team of porters, I knew we were in exceptionally capable hands.
Even before reaching Torres del Paine, on the drive to our hotel, we began encountering extraordinary wildlife—guanacos, and a flock of condors gliding right above us. From that point on, the adventure only got better.
We encountered an extraordinary range of wildlife throughout the trek. We saw condors soaring above us, a puma on our very first day, several species of songbirds including thrush and flycatchers, and the striking Fire-eyed Diucon in the French Valley. Along the shore of Lake Dickson we spotted the Ashen-headed Goose, and later the Southern Lapwing. On our pre-dawn hike to the Towers, in complete darkness, we even came across a Rufous-legged Owl. And finally, on our descent, we were treated to the unforgettable sight of a Magellanic Woodpecker.
After Cristian’s orientation on the trail ahead and the wildlife we might encounter, we felt prepared. And then, on the very first day, we quite literally “ran into” a puma strolling along the trail beside us. Cristian had already assured us that pumas are not interested in humans and that there has never been an attack in the park—so we stayed calm and simply admired the moment.
Cristian took every opportunity to teach us about the history, geography, ecology, and culture of the region. It was captivating. I’m not sure words can fully express the appreciation and admiration I have for Cristian, his team, and Patagonia Discovery Adventures.
Each day when we arrived in camp, Cristian arranged our sleeping accommodations, which were surprisingly comfortable. Before dinner, he would even organize a little happy hour with appetizers, sometimes in a private room. Every detail was thoughtful and generous.
And remarkably, for all the services provided by Patagonia Discovery Adventures, the cost of this trip was extremely reasonable.
