we recently returned from a wonderful trip to Gokyo Ri. Our experience with Nepal Trekking Insurance was poor - really non-existent. Why bother with this insurance - please read our experience below. One of our team of 5 was evacuated due to altitude sickness. from Dole I cannot fault the response that our guide arranged - the evacuation helicopter arrived within 2 hours of notification of the health issue. What was pathetic was the insurance company denying the claim for the flight as it had not been "pre-approved even in case of life-threatening emergency requirements". We had no phone signal and our mate clearly showed the symptoms of altitude sickness including mental confusion, and not having slept overnight - how exactly was pre-approval possible without phone signal and his mental state?? He was charged $3500 for the flight back to Kathmandu, even though there were 2 others on the flight from Dole to Lukla, and then 3 others on Lukla to Kathmandu. Looks like he is being charged for the entire flight/s. For reference the remaining four of use were charged $550 each for the flight from Lukla to Kathmandu. There is something wrong with this experience - my suggestion is that this insurance is not worth it

This trekking insurance turned out to be a total disaster. I had an emergency in the mountains at 4,200m and needed to be evacuated urgently. I gave a copy of my policy to my guide and he read all the details and called in the helicopter and I was out of danger and back to Kathmandu in hospital in about 2hrs. I was kept in overnight for observation and I was released the next day. A simple, yet extremely dangerous case of altitude sickness. I had to wait to be released from the hospital by the insurance company. They confirmed my coverage, approved the hospital bill and I was released. Then a few hours later it was revoked. They claimed I had not called the specific number to get approval before being evacuated from the mountain. The number is not on any policy document that I was sent and as it was an emergency (ie: I was struggling to breathe) the group decided to get me off the mountain ASAP instead of trekking down. This retraction of approval is a joke as I still can't find any documentation from Wetravel or ISA (who are on the policy). And as I was in no fit state to try to find internet connection so I could double and triple check everything, i asked to be taken down ASAP. This policy is a waste of money and it is clear that the process is set up to keep key information from the insured so that the claim can be denied after the fact. I will never be using Wetravel again. Thanks for wasting my time and money.

I had a fantastic time on this trek. Bala, the guide, was extremely helpful and knowledgeable and was a great person to have around doing it solo. Apar was also incredibly good and they were able to lend me some items for the trek, at no additional cost, and provided airport drop off and pick up. Overall, it was great value for money and I would wholeheartedly recommend trekking trail Nepal.
