At 11:00 am, we depart Riobamba (2,750 m) toward Chimborazo National Park, enjoying views of the high páramo and wildlife along the way. Around 1:00 pm, we arrive at Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge (3,900 m) for a warm lunch and final gear check.
By 3:00 pm, we reach the Refuge Carrel car park (4,850 m). From here, those continuing to Camp 1 (5,300 m) begin a two-hour ascent, hiking slowly to aid acclimatization while enjoying views of the glacier and surrounding valleys.
Upon arrival, there is time to rest and prepare gear for the night’s climb. In both the refuge and Camp 1, dinner is served at 5:00 pm, after which climbers rest until the summit push later in the evening.
The summit push begins late at night, with climbers ascending under the stars toward Chimborazo’s Whymper summit (6,263 m). The climb typically takes 6 to 10 hours, depending on weather and group pace, with steady progress across snow and ice fields.
The summit window is between 6:00 and 7:30 am, allowing time to enjoy sunrise views from the highest point in Ecuador and the closest point to the sun on Earth.
After taking summit photos, you will begin your careful descent, returning to Camp 1 (5,300 m) for a warm breakfast and a moment to rest.
Following breakfast, we pack up and begin the return journey back to Riobamba (2,750 m), marking the end of services and the conclusion of your Chimborazo expedition.
