Together, we will face the truth of our nation's history of anti-Black racial terror and violence, self reflect on the ways each of us have upheld and perpetuated white supremacy in our lives, and embrace our ability to affect change and dismantle racism, first within ourselves, and then in our families and communities. During the weekend, we will visit The National Memorial For Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration, the Freedom Riders Museum, the Mothers of Gynecology Museum in Montgomery, and the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama.

This trip has been designed for the South Asian community, and we are opening it up to include people of all racial identities to address and unpack anti-Blackness for the purpose of healing and working towards solidarity in our fight for Black and collective liberation. Our purpose is to listen to and learn from Black and Brown leadership, utilize anti-oppression tools and resources to discuss the systems of caste and anti-Blackness, strategize ways to do less harm,  and develop ways to move forward with mindful action toward collective liberation.

We invite you to engage in this transformational experience as we delve into these courageous conversations with trip facilitators Susanna Barkataki and Tina Strawn. 

Susanna Barkataki (she/they) is a M.Ed, E-RYT 500, Yoga Therapist, Ayurvedic Practitioner & Indian Yoga Teacher in the Shankaracharya Tradition. Susanna is the Founder of Ignite Institute for Yogic Leadership and Social Change, and bestselling author of Embrace Yoga’s Roots: Courageous Ways to Deepen Your Yoga Practice.

Susanna's vision is a world where 1 million yoga practitioners are culturally aware and change the world with yoga bringing unity & equity for all.

Tina Strawn (she/they) is a joy and liberation activist, racial and social justice advocate, and author of "Are We Free Yet? The Black, Queer Guide to Divorcing America." Tina is also the owner and host of the Speaking of Racism podcast and she is the co-founder of Here4TheKids, an abolitionist movement to ban guns and fossil fuels. The heart of Tina's work is founding and leading Legacy Trips, immersive, 3-day antiracism weekends where participants visit historic locations such as Montgomery and Selma, AL, and utilize spiritual practices and other mindfulness based resources as tools to affect personal and collective change. Tina has three adult children, an ex-husband, an ex-wife, and an ex-country. 

Tina has a TedX Talk entitled, "Blaxit: The New Underground Railroad"  She has been a full-time minimalist nomad since February 2020 and currently lives in Costa Rica.

Once registered, our Legacy Trips team will reach out to go over all the information needed to prepare for the trip including help with making travel arrangements to meet us in Montgomery, Alabama. Participants will also be given optional soul assignments, or pre-work (such as books to read, podcasts to listen to, documentaries to watch, etc) to help them get started on building a solid foundation for their personal collective liberation journey.

Following every Legacy Trip, guests are invited and encouraged to participate in free monthly alumni calls to stay engaged with the Legacy family and continue cultivating community and accountability in their ongoing liberation and solidarity journey. We also offer a Legacy Trips After Care program for those who want a more expansive and comprehensive support system.

This trip is for people of all racial and gender identities who are on their own decolonizing journey and want to do the inner work of allowing truth to guide them in their liberation and solidarity practice, specifically as it relates to anti-Blackness.

Deposits for all Legacy Trips are non-refundable. The balance of the total cost of the trip, not including the deposit, is refundable in the event the participant requests in writing to cancel before 30 days from the start of the trip they registered for. If the need to cancel arises, the participant has the option to put whatever monies they have already paid towards an upcoming Legacy Trip within one calendar year.

The Dignity Effect, an emotional health education firm for adults, has partnered with Legacy Trips to provide support as you move forward. Legacy Trips After Care is a 4-week cohort for post-trip group processing and exploration of Soul Care practices for your anti-racism and social justice journey. Guided by Nya Abernathy, founder of The Dignity Effect, each cohort includes coaching, gatherings, and materials for your road ahead.
