Socorro Islands Liveaboard

The Revillagigedo Archipelago is constantly named by divers as some of the best big animal diving on earth. This UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the largest Marine Protected Areas in the world is located 240 miles off the coast of Mexico. The area is more commonly known by the name of its largest island – Isla Socorro. This is a place where mantas growing upwards of 7 meters wide (23 feet) are a common sight. A location where over 10 species of sharks can be spotted, friendly pods of dolphins join divers, and giant tuna can be seen hunting. But it is not just the abundance of pelagic marine life that makes this area so special. The interactions with these beautiful creatures at these unique islands are what underwater dreams are made of. I think it was best summed up by a close friend who said diving here is emotional. Imagine a massive oceanic manta ray spotting you from afar, and seeking you out. Swimming directly to your face to look you in the eye and then spending the next 20 minutes circling you as if she wants to begin a conversation. Picture pods of dolphins that actively seek out divers beckoning them to play. All the while white tip sharks gather in piles of 10s & 20s, schools of shy hammerheads create choreographed walls out in the blue, and huge tiger sharks patrol the depths. This is the Revillagigedo.

Arrival - Cabo San Lucas

Our trip will begin at the Nautilus suite located on the marina in downtown Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. We’ll set sail that evening for Isla San Benedicto, the closest of the 3 islands. The crossing to San Benedicto takes around 24-26 hours giving us plenty of time to settle in, catch up with friends, and learn all about the incredible encounters that are waiting for us. Award-winning underwater photographer & conservationist, Jay Clue, will be on hand to give a presentation about the current conservation work & manta identification projects going on in the area with the Pacific Manta Research Group. He’ll also show you how to get involved during the trip – and maybe even have the chance to name a manta!

Day 2 - 6

The itinerary for the trip will take us through the Revillagigedo Islands from San Benedicto to Socorro and our personal favourite, Roca Partida! We’ll aim to hit all the best dive sites that make this area so famous including El Cañon, The Boiler, Roca Partida, Cabo Pearce, and more! With up to 4 dives per day you’ll have chances to encounter friendly giant oceanic manta rays, over 10 species of sharks including scalloped hammerheads, silver tips, white tips, black tips, silkies, Galapagos, dusky, tiger sharks, whale sharks, as well as bottlenose dolphins, false killer whales, massive yellowfin tuna, humpback whales, and more. And for those interested, we’ll be doing a special silky shark night snorkel one evening too!

Day 7-8

After 5 full days of diving, we will begin our journey back to Cabo San Lucas. On the return crossing Jay and the team will be on hand to help with photo editing tips, manta ray identification submissions, and more. Then we’ll wrap up the trip with our version of the infamous Crap Photography contest.
