If you're joining us for the full 10-day European Adventure, we will depart MSP and head to Helsinki via Amsterdam on Thursday afternoon.
Upon arrival in Helsinki, we will take the train to Tampere, settle into our hotel and have a relaxing dinner at a fabulous steakhouse after a long day of travel. We'll finish the night with a cocktail at sky deck bar with beautiful views of the city before heading to bed to - hopefully - beat the jet lag!
This day, it's really all about the food starting with a big breakfast at the cutest little cafe on the outskirts of the city. On the way back into downtown, we'll stop at a lookout tower known for it's gorgeous views...and its donuts! Then we'll take a tour of the city - including it's famous food hall - before having a late lunch at one of my favorite restaurants just outside the arena. Then, we'll head inside for the first of two games of the Karjala Cup featuring the men's national teams of Finland, Sweden, Czechia and Switzerland.
Who am I kidding...everyday on a Julie Approved Group Trip is all about the food and we never skip breakfast. We'll start the day at a local cafe with amazing pastries that will have you checking your plate for crumbs. Then we'll head to the Laborers Museum. During our tour of the city on Saturday, we'll learn that Tampere got it's start and grew as a city because of industry with majority of its population working - and living! - at the factories. This museum allows us to explore that history and showcases its evolution as one of Finland's largest cities. It's fascinating. You're going to love it!
Then we'll have lunch at one of my favorite Mexican restaurants - my mouth is watering just thinking about it! - before heading back to the arena for the final two games of the Karjala Cup.
We'll grab a quick breakfast before boarding the train to Helsinki. Upon arrival, we'll check into another four-star hotel and head over to the Old Market Hall for the best salmon soup of your life! Then, we'll head out on a city tour to learn some fun facts about the city and it's fascinating history before we partake in a traditional Finnish sauna...including a cold water plunge! (or a dip in the heated pool, if that's more your speed). For dinner, we'll have one of the best burgers in the city as we overlook the hustle and bustle of the main street in town and maybe hit up a few night time photo ops before calling it a night.
If you opted for the week-long adventure in Sweden, you will fly from MSP to Stockholm via Amsterdam and we'll meet you there on Tuesday afternoon!
If you've been exploring Finland, we'll get breakfast before heading to the airport for our late morning flight to Stockholm.
We'll meet up at the airport with some new members of the traveling party just arriving from Minnesota and head downtown to check into our four-star hotel.
We'll head to a local food hall for a tour, complete with samples of local delicacies for a light - albeit a little late - lunch, while learning about the beautiful building it calls home and an introduction to the history of Stockholm. Continuing with that theme, our next stop is one of my favorite museums in the city. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but on the inside it's a historical treasure trove. I could spend HOURS here and, in fact, I have...many times! We'll have a guided tour to see the highlights and some time to explore a bit on our own before we head to dinner and one of my favorite lookout points over the city for a photo op before calling it a night.
For those staying in Stockholm, I will provide ideas of places to see, things to do and where to eat while the rest of us head to the airport for our flight to Northern Sweden.
Upon our arrival, we'll check into our hotel, enjoy a little fika (afternoon snack), take a quick spin around town to learn why they are literally in the process of relocating it and have a hearty dinner before we hop in the van to head out of the valley (and away from any potential cloud cover) and chase the northern lights!
The sun sets at 2pm in Kiruna this time of year, so it's not like this has to be a particularly late night to enjoy the aurora borealis should it decide to make an appearance. We might even have time to enjoy the hot tub at out hotel when we return!
We'll have breakfast early and get a jump on the day to take full advantage of the five-and-a-half hours of daylight! Our activities today are weather dependent as there needs to be *enough* snow on the ground to get the full experience. Our visit is right on the cusp of the start of their winter season, but I'm told we should be good, so...let's all cross our fingers and toes!
Our first stop is a dog-sledding adventure that may or may not include ice fishing and our second adventure is a trip to a native Sami village where we'll learn more about the ancestors of the land, enjoy a visit with the reindeer that may or may not include sleigh rides/races before enjoying a native dinner and the possibility of enjoying the northern lights while relaxing around the fire just outside the lavvu (dinner tent).
Then, we'll head back to the hotel for the night.
For those of you coming to Stockholm just for the games over the weekend, you'll leave MSP in the afternoon and meet us in Stockholm on Friday afternoon!
We'll get another early start to our day to maximize the daylight with a trip to the famous Ice Hotel. We'll have the chance to see the actual hotel made of ice in the process of being built and take an ice sculpting class of our own to learn the tricks of the trade before heading to the airport for our flight to Stockholm.
Upon our arrival, we'll head downtown to check into our four-star hotel and head right out for a fika and a little walk around Gamla Stan (Old Town Stockholm) and a tour of arguably the most influential museum in Stockholm before heading to my absolute favorite place to eat in Stockholm. It's a farm-to-table restaurant that I make sure to visit EVERY time I'm in town because it is THAT good!
Then we'll take the "long" way back to the hotel (it's not really that long) to enjoy the Christmas decorations that debut that weekend!
We'll start the day with breakfast and head to Djurgarden for a tour of two museums. The first museum, I really had no interest in going to and I don't think I went to it until my third or fourth trip to Stockholm and only went because my friend was intrigued and really wanted to go and I am SO GLAD she did because it absolutely blew my mind. It is now my top recommendation for things to do in Stockholm. I hope you love it as much as I do!
After that, we'll tour another museum that is also quite jaw dropping, but for entirely different reasons. Then, we'll have lunch at my favorite burger spot in town and head to the arena for the 5pm game between the Minnesota Wild and Ottawa Senators. After the game, we'll head to Kungstagarten for a spin around the ice rink (or at least watch other people take a spin around it) and stop for dessert along the way!
We'll start the day with a stop at my favorite cafe in the city for breakfast and then head to the palace for an in-depth guided tour. In case you didn't know, the Swedish Royal family is actually of French descent and the story behind that is absolutely WILD! Can't wait for you to learn more about them, the history of the palace and where the idea of Tre Kronor (the three crowns that symbolize Sweden and is worn on their national jerseys) came from.
We'll have lunch and browse the Stockholm Christmas Market for a bit before we head to Avicii Arena for the 2pm game between the Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs. After the game, we'll head back to the Christmas Market because...why not? And, grab some hot chocolate at another favorite cafe of mine before we head to Sodermalm for another photo op of the city on our way to dinner, where we will FINALLY have some Swedish meatballs at my absolute favorite place to eat them. Again, my mouth is already watering just thinking about them!
Then we'll head back to the hotel and pack our bags to head home the next day.
We'll hit up one of my favorite places to eat a big breakfast and, if you follow me on social media, you know I have a thing for pretty libraries and Stockholm's Central Library has a beautiful rotunda that is an excellent spot for one last photo op before we head to the airport for our early afternoon flight back to Minneapolis via Amsterdam with an estimated 7pm arrival at MSP.
