About your trip

Brazil is my favorite country in the world, and nothing brings me more joy than the prospect of going back with you! Brazil is not an easy destination for solo travelers, especially if you don't speak Portuguese, and most group trips never venture beyond Rio, which is why this group trip is so special to me.

On this trip, we will be visiting Rio and Salvador, two cities that are known for their rich culture, especially as it pertains to Afro-Brazilian history. My goal in leading this group trip to Rio and Salvador is to show you a city that is famous around the world while also visiting another city that I think has so much to offer yet is severely underrated. By visiting both cities, we will learn so much about the country's beautiful African legacy and how it ultimately shapes Brazilian culture as a whole.

This trip will be the perfect blend of cultural immersion and relaxation. We'll see the most popular landmarks of each city, we'll spend time on the beautiful beaches, we'll watch incredible performances, we'll lounge by the pool, and we'll visit several different sites to learn about Afro-Brazilian history and culture.

If you've been wanting to go to Brazil but haven't been ready to go alone and have an appreciation for Black cultural immersion, this trip is for you!

Cancellation policy

Unfortunately, all bookings and deposits are non-refundable. I personally set up everything for the trip and if you decide to cancel, I cannot get my time and expenses back, so refunds aren't possible. You will be responsible for the cost of the trip. For this reason, I highly recommend obtaining travel insurance that covers emergency cancellations or even CFAR (Cancel for any reason coverage). I recommend Squaremouth, Tin Leg, World Nomads, or Safety Wing.

Accommodation

This trip is designed for travelers who are social and don't mind sharing a room with other members of the group. On this trip, we will be staying in nice hostel dorms as well as double occupancy hotel rooms.

Flights

Since people will be flying in from all over the world, flights are NOT included but I am more than happy to advise you on a flight, just contact me! When booking your flights, I would recommend booking your flights to arrive at GIG (Rio de Janeiro/Galeão–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport) before 5pm on the start date of the trip (July 16th) so that you can attend the welcome dinner. On the last day of the trip (July 24th), check out from the hostel is at 11am but you are welcome to leave anytime. Should you have an evening flight, it will be possible to store your luggage.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is required for this trip! If you have a travel credit card, I recommend booking your flight with it so that you are insured through there. Otherwise, you should book a policy with emergency medical coverage. Some providers I recommend include Squaremouth, Tin Leg, World Nomads, and Safety Wing.

Itinerary Information

Please note that while I don’t anticipate any changes, the below itinerary is tentative and is subject to change. If any activities have to be changed, it will be replaced with one of a similar value and vibe. I.e, a cultural activity will be replaced with another cultural activity.

Visit to Quilombo de Kaonge

Today we will be visiting a place where the African legacy is the strongest, Quilombo de Kaonge. Quilombos (Palenque in Spanish) are settlements established by enslaved Africans who freed themselves from slavery. As a result, these settlements became known as sites of resistance as they would actively fight against their enslavement. Today, people still live in these communities and welcome us in to show us their way of life and teach us about their incredible history.

Day 6: Salvador

We will have the opportunity to watch an amazing performance that is based in the country’s rich African legacy. This is easily one of the best activities to do while visiting Salvador!
