About your trip

Join a backcountry ski adventure through Hokkaido’s iconic terrain, guided by certified local expert Aki Tachimoto, in partnership with Teton Bros and hosted by Agus from Esnativa. Explore deep powder zones like Niseko, Furano, and Asahidake, then unwind in natural hot springs and cozy mountain lodges. A trip designed for experienced skiers seeking authentic terrain, culture, and connection.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Sapporo & Transfer to Otaru
Land at New Chitose Airport (CTS) in the morning. Meet your Esnativa host and transfer to the coastal town of Otaru. Check into your hotel, gear check, and welcome dinner with the guiding team.

Day 2 – Resort Skiing at Sapporo Kokusai
Warm-up ski day at Sapporo Kokusai. Lift-accessed powder laps and short sidecountry tours as conditions allow. Return to Otaru for local seafood dinner and onsen experience.

Day 3 – Backcountry Day near Otaru
Touring day near the coastal ranges outside Otaru. Explore glades and bowls with sea views. Evening transfer to Niseko region and check-in at mountain lodge.

Day 4 – Niseko Lift-Access & Sidecountry
Lift-assisted skiing at Niseko United with access to gates and sidecountry terrain. Flexible plans based on weather. Optional onsen soak and dinner in Kutchan.

Day 5 – Rusutsu Resort & Touring Zones
Full day exploring Rusutsu’s playful terrain, known for deep powder and perfectly spaced trees. Return to accommodation or explore nearby backcountry zone depending on conditions.

Day 6 – Transfer to Asahikawa via Sapporo
Mid-morning transfer north towards central Hokkaido. Stop for lunch in Sapporo and continue toward Asahikawa. Scenic travel day through forested valleys. Check-in and group dinner.

Day 7 – Kamui Ski Links + Optional Touring
Ski day at Kamui Ski Links. Lift-access terrain with backcountry options nearby. Farewell dinner and celebration of the week’s adventure in Asahikawa.

Day 8 – Departure from Asahikawa
Breakfast and transfer to Asahikawa Airport (AKJ) for departure. Schedule flights after 11:00 AM for stress-free travel.

· Boutique Guesthouses in Otaru & Asahikawa: Locally run stays with authentic Japanese character, warm hospitality, and access to neighborhood onsens and dining
· Hotel in Niseko Area: Comfortable alpine-style lodging with modern amenities, perfect for easy access to the ski lifts and backcountry gates
· Traditional Ryokan Experience (optional): Depending on availability, guests may enjoy a stay in a traditional Japanese inn with tatami rooms, futon bedding, and local cuisine

Recommended Gear List – Hokkaido Backcountry Ski Tour

This checklist includes the essential equipment and clothing for a safe and enjoyable ski touring experience in Hokkaido. All gear should be in good condition and tested before departure.

Ski & Safety Equipment

  • Touring skis or splitboard (with touring bindings)

  • Climbing skins (pre-cut and tested)

  • Adjustable ski poles

  • Ski or snowboard boots (compatible with your setup)

  • Avalanche beacon (3-antenna, with fresh batteries)

  • Probe (minimum 240 cm)

  • Shovel (metal blade)

  • Backpack (30–40L, with ski/snowboard carry system)

  • Helmet

  • Goggles (low-light and sunny lenses)

Technical Clothing

  • Base layers (top and bottom – merino or synthetic)

  • Insulating mid-layer (fleece or light puffy)

  • Waterproof & breathable shell jacket (Gore-Tex or similar)

  • Waterproof shell pants or bibs

  • Down or synthetic insulated jacket (for rest breaks)

  • Ski socks (2–3 pairs, wool or synthetic)

  • Neck gaiter or buff

  • Warm hat / beanie

  • Lightweight gloves (for touring)

  • Insulated gloves or mittens (for descents)

  • Liner gloves (optional)

  • Sunglasses (with UV protection)

Lodge & Après-Ski Clothing

  • Comfortable clothes for the lodge

  • Slippers or sandals

  • Swimsuit (for onsen / hot springs)

  • Lightweight towel (optional – some onsen provide them)

  • Toiletries & personal medication

  • Travel-size first aid kit

  • Earplugs (recommended for shared accommodations)

Optional & Extras

  • Avalanche airbag backpack (optional but recommended)

  • Snow study kit (for advanced users)

  • GPS/watch with altimeter

  • Camera or GoPro

  • Power bank (cold drains battery fast)

  • Japanese plug adapter (Type A/B, 100V)

Additional Notes

  • Rental gear is available in Niseko or Furano (upon request).

  • Expected temperatures: -5°C to -20°C. Weather may vary rapidly.

  • A final pre-departure checklist will be sent 10 days before the trip.
