Intermediate Surf Lesson

I've taken surf lessons in several places around the world, and Dominical Surf School is hands down the best. It's not even a competition. Every single coach I've had has been wonderful. They discussed what I knew and what I wanted to learn, and then explained things clearly throughout the lessons. I wanted to be able to more reliably read and pick waves to ride, then become stronger and more reliable at catching them, and my instructor (Gonzo) got me there! Thank you!

And, I haven't taken their beginner lessons, however I've seen them on the beach in Dominical and *really* wish my husband and I had taken our first lessons with Dominical Surf School -- they are clearly excellent, and take advantage of Dominical's white water so that students get the feeling of how to pop up and ride, rather than exhaust themselves paddling. 

Mario and Federico were excellent instructors 👍.  Very patient with our beginner group, and very observant as the lesson progressed in offering tips to get us all up and standing and maximizing waves.  Had a great time with DSS!

5 Lessons Package

If you are looking for surf lessons in this area, look no more. This school is perfect in every way!!! We had a large group of intermediate surfers and beginners. Debbie and her team were able to accomodate all levels. They put so much thought into how to give everyone what they needed. The coaches here are very good at explaining and teaching technique and how to read waves. They do way more than just give you a push, like many schools do. Also, they were able to help two women in our group who are 60+ get up and have the time of their lives. You could see how much they cared about everyone’s progress. I cannot speak more highly of them, they are amazing!!!

My family booked a beginner lesson and had so much fun we came back for another lesson later in the week! Surfing is so much fun, and Dominical Surf School was the perfect place to learn 

The semi-private lesson that my kids took on Dec 21st, was marvellous! They had a chance to go on many waves and improved quite a lot! They finished their 2 hour class very enthusiastic! Thanks to their wonderful teacher!

I loved my surf lesson so much I went back 2 days later! I was nervous having no experience surfing, but the amazing instructors here had me standing up on waves the first day, and paddling out to catch my own waves the second day. The whole team is so warm, professional, and encouraging, it made the whole experience so positive and fun. They get you going, you don’t spend too much time on land, you get right out there and get on waves! I highly recommend Dominical Surf School to learn to surf and I can’t wait to come back!

I am pretty guilty of not taking the time to leave reviews yet rely on them for guidance in planning trips.  I was so blown away with Dominical Surf School I felt compelled to take the time.  I’m sure there are other really good surf schools in Dominical but wow!!!!  Dominical surf school and the 4 instructors we worked with were amazing.  First off, my daughter has done surf camps and schools in the US as well as Australia but learned in more in one lesson with the instructors at Dominical Surf School than she did cumulatively with all the other lessons she has had.  My 3 sons, ages 17-20, and I (53) have never surfed before but every one of us were riding waves within minutes of hitting the water!  Another awesome differentiator was that fact that the instructors kept making us better, they never just punched the clock and were satisfied with the fact that we were riding, every wave they worked with us to get better and better.  Icing on the cake, my kids all 100% feel like they have made friends and all plan to come back even on their own to surf with these guys!  If your heading to Dominical and have ever even thought about surfing…..this IS THE PLACE!!!!  Note, my daughter took the intermediate lesson but my sons and I all did the beginner lesson but all received to same attention.

This surf school is amazing to say the least. Not only was booking very easy, we had a group of 10 and they were able to accommodate us all. We had 1:2 ratio with instructors which was perfect. We had 7 kids with us and each instructor was amazing with each child. They had patience, kindness and never hesitated to cheer on everyone. They provided seating and sun cover as well as water and even coffee for the spectators!! We loved it so much we went back a second time. They definitely made us comfortable and took pride in their job. I highly recommend them and wouldn’t hesitate to go again. 

Sonia and I took a hand full of our guests to Dominical Surf School for lessons while on a yoga retreat.  We had the pleasure of working with Maria at the front desk and instruction from Gonzalo, Jose, and Mario.  The instruction was clear, concise, and easy to understand and made us all feel safe to get out into the water, hop on our boards, and surf!  We all stood up on our boards and it was an amazing feeling.  The instructors were also soooo encouraging and motivating.  It was so good that a few of us went back a couple days later to take another lesson!  Thank you Maria for your warmth, kindness, and helping us with arranging our lessons.  Thank you Gonza for your expertise in ocean safety, learning about rip tides, and how to pop up on the board. I can’t say enough about this amazing experience! My son & I took a lesson with Miguel and he was able to dust off 25 years of cobwebs from my last surfing experience and teach my son to enjoy the sport! We had tried a few years ago in Maui but the waves were WAY too big that day & the camp should never have taken us out. I truly appreciated Dominical Surf School’s looking at the tides and waves prior to scheduling our lesson time in order to get the most reasonable waves for our experience. Miguel was patient and kind and supportive. My son said it was one of the main highlights of our trip to Costa Rica! Thank you, Miguel & team for making the whole experience so fabulous!!!!

Women's Surf Camp  - Triple Room - November 2025

Our instructor was great. We had an awesome time, so much so we booked a second surf lesson. 

My 2 sons 12, 8,  and I took a lesson with Gonzalo.  He was awesome and a great instructor. Had all 3 of us surfing in no time at all.   We will 100% be coming back  in the future for intermediate lesson and continue surfing any chance we get. 

I had a wonderful surf lesson and experience surfing at Dominicalito beach with Gunzo and Diego. Both instructors were excellent in explaining surf techniques in and out of the water. Loved to surf with you guys again! 

The guys were friendly and super aware of any angst we might have had regarding the water. Very patient and uber cognizant of our particular limitations. All and all - four thumbs up 👍👍👍👍


Where to start with this amazing experience. I attended The Dominical Surf School Women’s Surf Camp in Costa Rica. This is one of the best experiences I have ever had. The owner, Debbie, grew up in Dominical. She is truly such a special person; her energy is contagious. She went above and beyond to make our experience unforgettable and boy was it. All of the instructors involved in the camp were exceptional; very knowledgeable, patient, kind, and fun! This was my first surf camp and by day 4 I was riding green waves, paddling myself, and turning left/right. I couldn’t believe it. We had two video analyses and professional photography. Beyond the surf camp, Debbie is incredibly knowledgeable about the local area; dining, experiences, activities, etc. She is the ultimate tour guide. A yoga class and massage were both included in the cost of our trip and were great additions to the camp. We also went to two waterfalls which were beautiful. Debbie took us to a special dinner at a local restaurant that was 5 stars excellent. We also chose to do an add on cooking experience (farm to table) which was hands down one of the best food experiences I have ever done (highly recommend). The included accommodations were fantastic. I cannot wait to come back and join the camp again. The memories I made on this trip were unforgettable. This trip was so magical and really replenished my soul. Thank you to Dominical Surf School for making my surfing dreams come true!

I couldn’t recommend this school more!! I had the BEST beginner lesson and it was so fun I immediately signed up for another lesson the next day. Even though they were busy, they were bale to squeeze me in and the whole team and environment was extremely supportive and kind. As a 40 year old beginner, I was a little nervous but everyone made me feel welcome and confident. 10/10

My partner and I took beginner surf lessons with the Dominical Surf School and highly recommend it! Rodri was our instructor and he was the so sweet and encouraging. I had never surfed before so I was a bit nervous, and he built up my confidence and gave me great tips during the lesson- you will be in very good hands if you surf with Dominical Surf School. 

We had the absolute best time on our trip! Debbie and her wonderful team of instructors are just amazing! From great communication to being picked up at the airport and surf lessons in epic conditions, it was an epic trip! We will be back!!

Group Lessons

We signed up our son for a 2 hour private lesson. Our instructor was great, and really gave him great tips to continue to grow as a surfer. We highly recommend!

We had a wonderful time surfing with this group. 9 people ranging from never surfed to having surfed a few years and intermediate level.
Everyone in the group had fun, learned and got better. New surfers got to catch waves themselves for the first time, and others got to carve some nice turns on beautiful waves.
We did 3 sessions (M, W, F mornings). All were great.  Thanks so much for the great time in Dominical and Dominicalito waves!

Our kids had a great time. Lessons were very professional and everything was well explained. Communication was also good and replies can very quick.

This was wonderful! I learned so much and my instructor was so personable. I definitely recommend this experience!

We had an amazing time with this surf school! Everything we hoped for. Everyone was able to get up on the board. We did 3 days of 2 hour lessons with a group that varied in size from 7-13, ages 6-40+ - they allowed some of us to borrow rash guards if needed and gave us some great natural sunscreen for our faces. Debbie was wonderful to work with- easy to contact, very sweet and very organized, and willing to be flexible when we had kids who kept changing their minds. The instructors were great and encouraging - all of our kids loved who they were paired with. Unfortunately I don’t remember all of their names but my friend and I had Santi and he was great! Everyone says this was the highlight of the trip. I loved that they always seemed more concerned about safety than anything else. I was able to learn without being worried for the safety of my kids because the instructors were very focused on them 100% of the time. Martina took photos for us on the first day but it rained non stop, I thought there was no way she would be able to capture any good photos but she did! They set up a big tent for us for shade and a break from the rain with some chairs as well. You’ll leave feeling like they’re all friends. Book with them- you won’t be disappointed! 

The instructors were so nice and good at their job. We all fell in love with surfing and we had 13-52 year olds on our trip. 

They were amazing!  When we got into town, we made a stop by their office to see if they felt we could get up on the boards and have fun.  Of course they said yes, but they meant it--and we did it.  I'm in my early 50s, husband weighs 220 and our son is in the prime of his life.  We all three got up on the board several times and surfed some waves--it's so much fun!   The next day, they rented us a board for the whole day, and we took it to Playa Linda.  Great company and many thanks to Mario, Gonzalo, the second instructor whose name I've forgotten (sorry) and the cute girl from Jersey!

These guys are the best! Our teacher Jose was super knowledgeable, patient and an all around great guy. He had us standing up and riding waves in no time. If you’re looking to take surf lessons in Dominical go see the guys, they’ll take great care of you. 

Instructors were amazing and gave really practical steps & coaching to get up on the board.  I have never surfed before and I was able to get surfing in less than 1 hour!

Such a fun experience, I genuinely didn’t want to get out of the water!! The staff was so warm and welcoming, and we had the pleasure of having Jose as our instructor & Martina as our photographer! Would highly recommend this for beginners, I’ll be back :)

Dominical Surf School was an excellent choice to get advance lessons for my two children who are just beginning to compete in Surf Competitions.  Spencer and Atrea gave instruction in the surf while taping the session.  In between "heats" the video was reviewed and the kids were given pointers to work on in the next "heat".  Lots of lessons learned.   Great experience.

There are many great things about Dominical surf school but the best is the people. Not only Debbie but her whole team is lovely to interact with. My instructor Jose is an impressive surfer and a genuinely sweet person. Looking forward to surfing with these folks again when I’m back.
