Brief Itinerary - Manu National Park 6 Day Birding Tour

Day 1: Cusco to Pona Lodge
Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from the Andes through the mist-shrouded Cloud Forest. Along the way, look for the vibrant Cock of the Rock (Peru’s national bird) and woolly monkeys before arriving at Pona Lodge, nestled in the transition zone between the mountains and the jungle.

Highlights of the Day:

1. Cloud Forest trek in Manu Park

2. Visit the Peruvian National Bird LEK (lekking display)

3. Bird watching in the Cloud Forest, observing Tanagers, toucans, barbets, hummingbirds, quetzals, trogons, motmots, woodpeckers, and hawks.

4. Optional: Tanager garden visit for colorful bird photography.

Day 2: Pona Lodge to Yanayacu Lodge
Descending further into the Amazon basin, we transition from road to river. We navigate the Madre de Dios River, enjoying lunch on the boat while spotting herons, vultures, and kingfishers. We arrive at Yanayacu Lodge, located in a lush area perfect for an evening walk to observe nocturnal insects and amphibians.

Highlights of the Day:

1. Hummingbird Garden visit for Amazon bird photography (tanagers, barbets, monkeys, king vulture).

2. Relaxing hot spring experience in the Amazon jungle.

Day 3: Yanayacu Lodge to Casa Matsiguenka (The Reserved Zone)
Today we enter the legendary Reserved Zone. As we navigate the Manu River, the forest becomes taller and more pristine. This stretch is world-famous for sightings of Jaguars sunbathing on the banks, Black Caimans, and various species of monkeys. We overnight at Casa Matsiguenka, a lodge managed by the indigenous community.

Highlights of the Day:

1. Parrot Clay Lick Manu visit (parrots, parakeets, macaws).

2. Manu River boat trip for wildlife spotting (black caimans, white caimans, turtles, monkeys, capybaras, deer).

3. Jaguar searching along Manu River (high chances in dry season).

4. Cocha Otorongo visit for Giant Otter observation and Black Caiman.

5. Night walk Manu for nocturnal wildlife.

Day 4: Exploring the Reserved Zone (Cocha Salvador)
A full day dedicated to the treasures of the Reserved Zone. We visit Cocha Salvador, one of the most important oxbow lakes in Manu. From a silent catamaran, we search for the endangered Giant River Otters. We also explore forest trails to learn about medicinal plants and the complex ecosystem of the primary rainforest.

Highlights of the Day:

1. Cocha Salvador visit (largest oxbow lake in Manu National Park) for Giant Otters, Black Caimans, diverse birds, and monkeys.

2. Macaw Clay Lick Manu visit (Scarlet Macaws, Red-and-Green Macaws).

3. Night walk to observe nocturnal insects, amphibians, reptiles, night monkeys, and owls.

Day 5: Casa Matsiguenka to Tapir Clay Lick
We begin our journey back downstream but stop at a specialized location: the Tapir Clay Lick. Here, we spend time in a camouflaged observation blind, waiting for the South American Tapir—the largest land mammal in the Amazon—to arrive and consume mineral-rich clay.

Highlights of the Day:

1. Manu River sailing for second chances to spot caimans, monkeys, turtles, capybaras, deer, and green anacondas.

2. Jaguar search along Manu River (best chances July-October).

3. Tapir Clay Lick visit for nocturnal tapir observation.

4. Overnight jungle experience in a camouflage house to see tapirs.

Day 6: Tapir Clay Lick to Pona Lodge
Continuing our return journey, we travel back up the Madre de Dios River. This is a final chance to spot wildlife along the riverbanks and enjoy the sunset over the rainforest canopy. We return to the comfort of Pona Lodge for our final night in the jungle.

Day 7: Pona Lodge back to Cusco
After an early breakfast, we begin our return trip by boat and overland vehicle. We climb back through the Cloud Forest, offering one last look at the vast Amazonian green carpet before arriving back in the historic city of Cusco in the evening.
