      About this trip

Volcán Acatenango is the impressive beast that looms over Antigua, alongside Volcán de Fuego y Volcán de Agua. With an elevation of 3976 meters, Acatenago is the third tallest volcano in Central America. Not only does this one-of-a-kind hike take you to the summit of this impressive volcano, but you’ll also pass through various microclimates and ecosystems along the way. Of course, the most epic part of this adventure is watching the nearby Fuego volcano erupt with lava and a boom right across from your campsite at night. The last eruption of Acatenango occured in 1972 and Fuego’s last major eruption occurred in June of 2018, though it remains very active on a regular basis. Acatenango has two peaks, Pico Mayor and Yepocapa which are altogether known as the Tres Hermanas. The terrain on Acatenango is very loose gravel, almost sand-like, making the hike strenuous in some areas. The most difficult part of the hike is the initial warm-up from La Soledad to about 45 mins in and the summit the next morning due to high winds, extremely cold temperatures, and unstable terrain. The hike from La Soledad to the summit will take you through four distinct microclimates and temperatures on the volcano vary from highs of 74F/ 23C to freezing so it’s important to pack layers.

We will start by meeting you at your hotel/lodging entrance in our private shuttle as we begin our journey to the famed Acatenango volcano. You’ll then hike for around 4.5 - 6 hours on the first day as we reach an elevation of 3400m at the base camp. Here we rest for the remainder of the day to enjoy nature and an escape from the hustle and bustle of “life on the grid”. At night you’ll enjoy a campfire and hopefully stunning views of Fuego’s lava activity. The next day you’ll get up before dawn to hike to the summit (approx 1 to 1.5 hours) where we will take in the amazing views! From there it’s back down to base camp for breakfast before beginning our descent (approx 3 hours hiking) back to the entrance to hop in our car and head home. You are usually back in Antigua, Guatemala by noon at the latest!

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

I had the best time in Cuba! Every person we worked with was so friendly and a true joy to work with. The trip was so informative and also so much fun. We truly could not have asked for a better guide and team. Would 100% recommend heart of travel and the Cuba team. The trip was seamless from start to finish including accommodations, food, planned activities and transportation.

What an amazing experience!!!! I am a single woman in my 60's who wanted to travel to Guatemala alone but didn't feel safe to do it. Heart of Travel made this dream trip come true for me. With the knowledgable guide of Selvyn, I was well cared for and highly informed about life and culture in Guatemala. Before my trip Chelsey, the owner of Heart of Travel, had a zoom conference to get to know me and my interests. Chelsey hand designed this trip to my needs and interests. Guatemala exceeded my expectations. Each day I was more and more surprised by the service of Heart of Travel and the beauty and colors of Guatemala. I was most impressed that Heart of Travel found local vendors ,for example a weaving coop ,to help individual single moms to help support their families. A great experience. I want to go to Cuba next with Heart of Travel. I love you guys!!!!!

The journey to the Galapagos turned out to be a bucket list adventure I hadn't realized I was longing for. It was simply incredible. I wholeheartedly recommend it to everyone. I ended up booking this trip because it was the only one available that fit into my academic schedule, and I'm so thankful I did. This marks my third journey with Heart of Travel, and I'm eagerly anticipating my fourth in August. Heart of Travel consistently excels in crafting their trips. They have a knack for selecting tour leaders who are truly passionate about their work.

This was an amazing trip! The itinerary was fantastic and the tour leader, Chiva, made it a personal adventure for each of us. She made a sincere effort to get to know each participant and ensure that theirs was a wonderful experience. The hotels were very good, and the restaurants were equally as wonderful. I loved the preorder option at some of the restaurants because it made efficient use of our time while giving us local options without asking a million questions. Isabela Island was like a fairytale, and I would have loved an extra half of day (or more) there. Julio in Isabela Island was my favorite local guide. His demeanor was laid back and patient (which is really helpful with a herd of women!) Wildlife Discovery was definitely that! We encountered so many animals on the land in the sea. The snorkeling excursions were definite highlights.

This was a fabulous day! We relaxed and soaked and got acquainted with some of our trip mates. The pools were amazing and lunch service was very good. The food was delicious: best potato soup I had during my time in Ecuador! Checking in and out was easy for us since we had the group reservation. Our driver, Mario, was professional, yet friendly and accommodating.

Heart of Travel is the best for magical and ethical vacations! Chelsea and her incredible team first won me over in Guatemala in 2023 as they planned a beautiful trip that allowed us to see and experience so many different places, people, and things. A helicopter ride, a volcano hike, spa day, meeting the most badass Mayan weaver!!, a once-in a lifetime sunset tour in Tikal - done. I'm still trying to get over this trip lol. They knocked it out of the park again in Cuba for NYE! Chelsea and the spectacular Paloma had us dancing multiple nights away, eating the BEST food, and seeing ALL the sights while also giving us ample opportunity to support the Cuban people and educating us on why that is so important. You will leave their trips with new memories, new friends, and possibly, some new perspectives. Do it!!!

Cuba, you have left an undeniable mark on my soul… Your people, your colors, your food, your history… Thank you for sharing this world with us! Cannot wait for our next trip! We love you 🥰

I just returned from a two week trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. The trip was an incredible balance of learning, discovery, and recreation. Both the local guides and the Heart of Travel coordinator, Chiva, were excellent!!! The accommodations, food, and itinerary were fantastic. I will definitely travel with Heart of Travel again.
