Join me, Matthew LaCroix, on an adventure through the Van region of Türkiye to explore ancient megalithic temples and ruins that the world is only beginning to rediscover. Journey with me as we investigate enigmatic sites such as Ayanis, the underwater ruins of Lake Van, Kef Kalesi, Çavuştepe, and the awe-inspiring Meher Gate—each holding clues to a forgotten chapter of human history.

Day 1: Istanbul

Day 1: Istanbul image

Arrive in Istanbul

Arrive in Istanbul and settle into the comfort of the Eresin Hotel Topkapi 5, with convenient transportation arranged for your arrival. In the evening, join fellow travelers for a group dinner at 7 pm. The evening will feature welcome remarks and introductions from your hosts, Matt and Paul, setting the tone for an unforgettable journey ahead. 

Day 2 - Istanbul

Exploring Istanbul

Start your morning by delving into Istanbul’s rich history with visits to its iconic landmarks. Discover the ancient Hippodrome, once the heart of Byzantine chariot races, marvel at the architectural splendor of the majestic Blue Mosque, and stand in awe of the timeless beauty of Hagia Sophia. 


In the late afternoon, relax with a private boat cruise along the Bosphorus, soaking in the breathtaking views of Istanbul. End the day with dinner and an overnight stay in Istanbul. 

Day 3 - Van

Travel to Van

After breakfast, embark on a short 2-hour flight to the enchanting city of Van. Upon arrival, dive into the region’s rich heritage with a visit to the Van Museum, showcasing an exceptional collection of artifacts and cultural treasures. 


Following this, enjoy a unique experience meeting the famous Van cats, renowned for their multi-colored eyes. Later in the day, settle into the comfort of the Van Elit World Hotel for a relaxing evening. Lecture by Matthew after dinner. 

Day 4 - Çavuştepe

Exploring Çavuştepe & Akdamar Island

Begin the day with a scenic drive to the captivating ancient site of Çavuştepe, where history comes alive through its remarkable ruins. Next, enjoy a delightful lunch in the picturesque Akdamar region. In the afternoon, set sail on a serene boat ride to Akdamar Island, home to the stunning Akdamar Armenian Church. Explore this architectural gem and immerse yourself in its rich cultural and historical significance. 

Day 5 - Ayanis

Explore Ayanis and Swim in Lake Van

Begin your day with a hearty Turkish breakfast before setting out to explore the ancient and mysterious site of Ayanis Kalesi. Admire its impressive basalt and andesite temples, adorned with sacred symbols that reveal the site’s historical and cultural importance. What mysteries does it still hold? 


Afterwards, cool off with a refreshing swim in Lake Van and walk along its finest beach. Don't forget your bathing suit! After dinner, enjoy a lecture by Paul Wallis.

Day 6 - Underwater Ruins

Kef Kalesi and the Underwater Ruins

Journey to the lakeside town of Adilcevaz, located on the northern shores of Lake Van. Begin your adventure with a boat ride out to see the enigmatic underwater ruins, with its mysterious Flower of Life design and Spiral, found on the bottom of the lake. 


After a delicious lunch in the town of Adilcevaz, travel up winding mountain roads to the ruins of Kef Kalesi, celebrated for its striking basalt megaliths and stunning panoramic views. Afterwards, immerse yourself in the region’s fascinating history with a visit to the Adilcevaz Museum. Conclude the day with a return to Van for dinner. 

Day 7 - Mount Nemrut

Exploring Mount Nemrut and Ahlat Selçuk

Embark on a scenic drive to the charming town of Tatvan, nestled along the western shores of Lake Van. Begin your adventure with an unforgettable hike into the massive crater of Nemrut Volcano, a breathtaking natural wonder showcasing stunning views and fascinating geological formations. 


Continue your exploration with a visit to the historic city of Ahlat Selçuk, celebrated for its remarkable Seljuk-era tombstones and deep cultural significance. Conclude the day with a relaxing return to Van for dinner.  

Day 8 - Meher Gate

Exploring Van Castle and the Meher Gate

Begin your day with a visit to the breathtaking Van Castle, a historic fortress that offers sweeping panoramic views and houses the famous Xerxes inscription—a timeless relic of ancient Persia’s grandeur. Just a short distance away, explore the enigmatic Meher Gate, a site shrouded in mystery and rich in cultural significance. 


After a delightful lunch, dive into the artistry of Van with a visit to Bazaar Urartu. Here, admire the intricate kilims and carpets that showcase the region’s deep-rooted traditions and remarkable craftsmanship.  

Day 9 - Mount Ararat

Explore Noah’s Ark and Mount Ararat

Embark on a breathtaking journey to the iconic Mount Ararat, a legendary peak steeped in cultural significance, situated to the east of Lake Van. Pause for a delightful lunch in the historic town of Doğubeyazıt, a charming gateway to the region’s rich heritage. 


In the afternoon, explore the awe-inspiring Ishak Pasha Palace, an Ottoman-era architectural gem that beautifully blends history, culture and artistry. Conclude your adventure with a visit to the intriguing Noah’s Ark site, a place shrouded in myth and mystery. Return to Van in the evening and unwind with a comfortable overnight stay. 


Prepare to travel home the next morning from Van.
