For this workshop, we will be photographing across several different National Forests within the Wasatch Mountain Range. Participants will need their own vehicle to get around, though we strongly encourage carpooling within the group to help minimize our impact and make parking easier at popular locations.
On the first day, we will meet in Provo, Utah by 2 pm after everyone has checked into their hotel. We will make introductions and go over the plan for the week before heading out in the afternoon to photograph the nearby mountain canyons during the evening light. Days 2 through 4 will be full shooting days, with opportunities to photograph from sunrise through sunset, along with breaks in the middle of the day to rest, review images, and recharge. On the final day, the workshop will conclude after photographing the morning light, allowing time to return to the hotel, pack up, and check out.
Based on our combined experience photographing fall color in this region, we know which areas in the Wasatch Mountains are typically the most productive during the autumn season. That said, we will remain flexible throughout the workshop, making real-time decisions based on current lighting, weather, and conditions to ensure we are always in the best possible locations. Most shooting locations will be accessible from or near our vehicles, though on some days we may take short hikes to reach select mountain lakes or aspen groves. The longest hike will likely be no more than three miles round trip.
The scenery in this region is particularly well suited for intimate and detail-oriented compositions, so a telephoto lens and a sturdy tripod are strongly recommended.
This workshop is suitable for photographers of all skill levels, whether you are just getting started or have years of experience behind the camera. We are both highly experienced in teaching camera fundamentals, exposure, and composition. More importantly, we are passionate about sharing our creative philosophies and approaches to nature photography, helping you learn how to see beyond the obvious and create compelling images in a wide range of conditions. The glowing hillsides and golden aspen groves of the Wasatch Mountains provide the perfect environment to experiment, slow down, and develop your creative voice.
Some of the photography spots we will visit require walking and hiking on uneven ground. Please let us know if you have any medical conditions before signing up. To make sure this trip is right for you.
