ABOUT OUR RETREAT:

The Azores, PortugalāŽ¢Flowing with the Elements: Enjoy the brilliance and culture of SĆ£o Miguel Island

A Unique, Well-Rounded Spiritual Retreat by Yuval Samburski combining Yoga, Dance & Sound, Nature, Culture & Hikes (and more!)

The Azores: Flowing with the Elements

Set and guided by nature’s rhythm, the five elements, and the brilliance of an Island on all of its offerings, from breath-taking views, volcanic beaches, and nature hikes, from dipping in natural hot springs and sunset trips, to exploring Ponta Delgada, the island’s main town. Embark on a transformative yoga journey that goes beyond the mat, beyond the practice, and beyond what meets the eye.

Following our grand success in Croatia in 2024, we are, once again teaming up to create magic: Yuval Samburski of UVYoga, in collaboration with Purple Aura Retreats, you waited patiently, and we are here! We will stay in a newly constructed and well designed boutique hotel in Ponta Delgada (best way to explore the town!) this retreat will take you to the heart of nature, to enjoy the beauty and grandour of SĆ£o Miguel Island in the Azores, where the five elements come alive in spectacular ways:

  • Space for exploration, for yoga, dance, and movement. Without space we couldn’t be, we could not exist. We will explore freedom in space as individuals and community. On and off the mat, finding freedom within and all around us.
  • Earth for structure, support and stability. The earth will ground us as we hike through lush landscapes, volcanic craters, and serene plantations.
  • Air for breath, for health, for life. Air will fill our lungs as we practice Pranayama, as we breathe deeply along rugged coastal cliffs and take in the endless ocean horizons and island’s purified air.
  • Water for flowing through life, carving our path, with gentleness, with openness, with ease. Water will heal and sooth us as we soak in the island’s natural hot springs. We will be surrounded by tropical flora (stunning!) as we walk along and swim in the Atlantic ocean, where beaches are only black sanded (the island is volcanic!)
  • Fire for finding our strength, burning off excess weight (of any kind), for purifying. Fire awakens your inner strength and your ability to take action and make your dreams a reality. We will walk along black sand beaches formed by ancient volcanic activity, hike to craters, soak in naturally warm and healing hot springs. A sunset or two won’t hurt us either, so we will!

About Our Destination

We’ve chosen SĆ£o Miguel—the largest and most diverse island among the Azores' nine-island archipelago—as our home base! (Fun fact: It’s just a 5-hour direct flight from New York or Boston!)

Nestled in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, SĆ£o Miguel offers a unique sense of remoteness, where time seems to follow its own rhythm (this is no joke – come and feel this for yourself!)

Here, you won’t find flashy billboards or commercial distractions—just nature in its purest form. It’s a place where your body and mind naturally slow down, allowing you to fully unwind and recharge.

Our retreat will be centered in Ponta Delgada, the island’s charming capital town.

With its cobblestone streets, historic architecture, and waterfront promenades, Ponta Delgada combines European urban charm with the serenity of the ocean and the cliffs around. Spend your free days exploring local markets and churches, picturesque stores, bars cafes, pineapple plantations (aham, pineapple plantations in the capital?? Wait to learn all about its production and amazing sweet taste!), all while feeling the heartbeat of the Atlantic. Yup! We are staying in a new boutique hotel, right in town. You will be able to explore so much by foot. Island freedom is found!

About Our Experience

This 7-night, 8-day retreat is an invitation to reconnect with yourself, nature and culture. Here’s how we’ll explore the elements together:

Guided Activities:

  • Hike Around Sete Cidades: Explore the western side of the island, where a massive volcanic crater now cradles twin lakes surrounded by lush greenery and stunning viewpoints.
  • Lagoa do Fogo (Lake of Fire): Trek to the top of this volcanic crater for breathtaking views of a pristine lake. Afterward, soak in nearby hot springs, nestled in nature, with pools of varying temperatures to suit your relaxation and healing needs.
  • Furnas Village & Botanical Garden: Discover the island's geothermal heart at Furnas, where bubbling springs, steaming geysers, and the magical Terra Nostra Garden await. Soak in mineral-rich thermal pools surrounded by tropical flora, or wander through the garden’s vibrant pathways.
  • Oldest Tea Plantation in Europe: Walk among the tea fields of Gorreana, where tea has been cultivated since the 1800s. Learn about the origins of every tea variety (all stemming from Camellia Sinensis) and enjoy a freshly brewed cup while overlooking the Atlantic.

(SIDE NOTE! No, this isn’t Bali—it’s the Azores, and it’s an experience you’ll never forget! 😊)

Daily Yoga & Dance Practices

Once to twice a day, practice yoga, Pranayama, dance and movement in serene settings that connect you to yourself, nature and the elements. From a tranquil studio in the heart of Ponta Delgada to outdoor sessions in a lush banana plantation, each practice is designed to ground, energize, and inspire you. Sound Healing will also be offered!

Unstructured Exploration

You will also have enough free time to explore SĆ£o Miguel’s capital town, Ponta Delgada, at your own pace. Stroll along the coastal promenade, visit pineapple plantations, browse the farmer’s market, or discover local cheese shops like the famous ā€œKing of Cheese.ā€ Cute shops, bars and restaurants, as well are plenty for you to explore, and our hotel’s pool will be in your own back yard for to jump un at any time.

Treatments and Healing

Speaking of our boutique hotel, massages and treatments will be available for you to book, for some extra healing and support your journey.

These pools are not just about relaxation; they are a sensory experience, offering therapeutic benefits in a lush, tropical setting. Q&A

Why travel to the Azores?
The Azores offer a truly unique experience, being situated in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. This remote location creates a distinct sense of calm and detachment from the fast-paced world, while nature’s glory is extremely unique. Time seems to flow differently here, helping your body and mind to completely unwind. The absence of advertising and overwhelming modern distractions allows you to reconnect with nature on a deeper level.

The Azores are also rich in culture and traditions, blending Portuguese heritage with a unique island lifestyle. From volcanic landscapes to stunning coastal views, you'll find the Azores offer pristine beauty that feels untouched by time. All whilst European culture is weaved in to create an experience like no other. Highlights include local delicacies like fresh seafood and cheese, vibrant festivals, traditional Azorean music, and architecture that showcases the region's history. It’s a perfect blend of relaxation and cultural discovery.

How were the Azores formed?
The Azores were born millions of years ago through intense volcanic activity beneath the ocean. These eruptions pushed molten lava upward, forming a chain of islands that now make up this incredible archipelago. Over time, erosion and additional volcanic activity shaped the islands into their current landscapes, featuring lush greenery, dramatic cliffs, calderas, and thermal springs. The Azores sit on the junction of three tectonic plates, which is why their geology remains a source of fascination for scientists and visitors alike.

Is it safe to hike around the volcanoes?
Absolutely! The Azores are known for their well-maintained and clearly marked hiking trails, ensuring safety for all visitors. These paths allow you to explore breathtaking volcanic landscapes, from crater lakes to hot springs, without any unnecessary risks. Local guides and information boards provide extra assurance if you're new to hiking around volcanic areas.

When was the last volcanic eruption in the Azores?
The most recent volcanic eruption occurred in 1957 on the island of Faial, forming the Capelinhos Volcano. This event left a lasting mark on the island's landscape, creating a surreal, almost lunar environment worth visiting. SĆ£o Miguel, the island where most of our activities take place, has dormant volcanoes, ensuring a safe yet awe-inspiring exploration.

What’s the weather like in October?
The Azores boast a mild, temperate climate all year round. In October, you can expect:

  • Temperatures: 18–23°C (64–73°F) pretty prefect!! Making it comfortable for both outdoor adventures and relaxation.
  • Rain and sun mix: Occasional showers, between sun rays, are frequent, due to the island’s microclimate, so bringing a raincoat and expecting rainbows are good ideas!

How to Pack (here are some tips):

  • Layered clothing is essential to adapt to temperature changes throughout the day.
  • Due to the microclimate, pack layered clothes for flexibility (expect sun and rain!)
  • Hiking shoes are a must—we’ll be hiking for 3 days, yay!
  • A raincoat and a reusable water bottle are essentials.
  • Bring sunglasses and sunscreen, as sunny spells are common.
  • Expect rainbows (how does one pack for that??)
  • Dark bathing suits for hot springs—rich in iron, these waters are incredibly healing and relaxing but can stain light-colored swimwear.
  • Casual attire for dinners and exploration. The Azores are pure nature, and we are staying in town. So you can be your most relaxed, fun, natural self (and give some fashion when you feel it Tambien)!
  • Carry some cash for free days, as well as EU plugs for electronics.
  • No need to bring yoga mats or props—they’ll be provided by us.

Good to Know:

  • Cash and credit cards are accepted in 99% of locations.
  • English is widely spoken in most places we’ll visit.
  • The Azores' high season lasts through the summer to the end of September. By visiting in October, we’ll enjoy a quieter, more serene experience.
