About this trip

This unique tour gives you the opportunity to get to know a part of France beyond Paris, one with its own unmistakable regional identity.  The area has everything – the sea, great food, beautiful art, picturesque villages, prehistoric sties – you name it! But the best part is the Breton people with their love of dancing, music, and culture. In addition to sightseeing, we share a meal with women who live nearby, find out about the local wine (the best way – by tasting!), and learn to prepare some simple Breton recipes so you’ll be able to have a taste of Brittany when you go back home.

We will spend most of our time staying in the spacious home of Christine, a friendly Breton woman who teaches both French and English.  If you want to learn a bit of French (or improve what you remember from high school), you’ll have the opportunity to do it in a fun environment. If you don’t know French, that’s okay too. We’ll hear Christine’s anecdotes about the area, learn local cultural references, and you may pick up some new French expressions, in spite of yourself.

If touching the past is your thing, you’ll be in heaven – the area is brimming with history from the prehistoric monoliths of Carnac to tales of the French Resistance in World War II.

We’ll enjoy wine pairings, find out the correct way to hold a wine glass, and drink cidre from a bowl. We’ll walk by the sea, drive by the ocean, and wander around tucked-away harbors. There will be lots of laughter, good food, lively discussion, and wine, of course!

We’ll also spend a night at a B&B with stunning views of Mont St. Michel and have a special guided tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Our final night will be in the Breton capital city of Rennes, full of medieval half-timbered houses and a first class art museum.

Itinerary

DAY 1, FRIDAY
Train to Lorient

You will fly into Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport.  The train to Lorient leaves right from the airport, although you  may want to arrive in France a day or two early so that you have a bit of time to conquer jetlag. Then you will ride together to Lorient (which takes 3 ½ hours)  Christine and Sheila will be waiting for you at the station.

Once you arrive at Christine’s spacious home, you have time to freshen up and get settled. Then we take a stroll to the picturesque fishing port of Brigneau, hidden in a deep wooded area. Over the years, it has attracted famous painters, writers, and poets.

Meal included:  Dinner

Sheila Stone Tours
I’m Sheila Stone and I love travel so much that I started a tour company when I was 60. (Have I mentioned that I’m also a late bloomer?) I create and lead small groups of women to interesting places like London, Scotland, Ireland & Japan. I have some tours in The States too. In addition to the usual sightseeing, my tours give women an opportunity to meet local women. By staying in small hotels and eating at family restaurants as much as possible, our travel money stays in the communities we visit. A fun way to meet like-minded women!

The Wild About Harry Tour was amazing! My kids and I had a fantastic time. Sheila was great in making sure we saw as much of Harry Potter that London and Oxford have to offer, and she was also helpful in getting us to see the cities and planning our side trip to Paris. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that we will never forget, and we talk about constantly. Thank you!

Thoroughly enjoyed my Bayou trip with tour host Sheila and local host Andrina. Great mix of fun sights including Mardi Gras museum, local food, shopping, bars and music in NOLA. A powerful Whitney plantation visit. Andrina hosted a traditional crawfish boil and an amazing get together with women of the local area representing the various cultures of the region. Felt like visiting with friends and family. Highly recommend this trip! Sheila is a great guide and trip planner.
