About this trip

A note from Paul Rosolie:

If you were reading this, I want you to know how incredibly important your role and protecting this forest is. Protecting Amazonia has always been my calling but in the wake of Covid, when the fires have gotten worse and invasions are at a new high, more than ever it is important that we continue to keep these ancient ecosystems safe. The last year has been hard on our local team of rangers and conservationists. But now we are making the rally to begin again and pick up where we left off. These trips will give life to these projects and work to our local conservationists. Our team is looking forward to welcoming you to the Amazon and we want to say thank you in advance for being so intrepid to come and help us protect all of this great ancient wilderness. We couldn’t do it without you it’s going to be a hell of an adventure!

Description:

The loss of biodiversity has been described as the defining issue of our time, on this expedition we will be entering one of the most critical conservation areas on the planet. During this expedition we will be collaborating with Junglekeepers to give a true experience of the daily life of Junglekeeper rangers while they do their work to protect the forest. Participants in this expedition will have the opportunity to participate in patrols and work directly with the rangers.

Junglekeepers is helping to create a conservation area in the vitally important Madre de Dios region of the Peruvian Amazon. Junglekeepers works to protect one of the most biodiverse and pristine areas of this region: the Las Piedras river corridor, one of the last remaining untouched rainforests on earth.

Junglekeepers, in collaboration with local partners, has helped protect an initial 4,906 acres along Las Piedras river which is actively protected from resource extraction and destruction.

Forest Rangers monitor the concession and report any illegal activity. For local Peruvians the ranger program also offers an employment alternative that protects the land rather than harms it.

It is central to the Junglekeepers ethos to employ and train local and indigenous community members in the active protection of land that is ultimately theirs. Forest Rangers monitor the concessions, maintain trails and report any illegal activity occurring on the land being monitored. Rangers also track wildlife to contribute to broader scientific datasets in the region.

For local Peruvians, the Ranger Program also offers an employment alternative to protect the land rather than being forced to participate in harmful activity due to economic pressure. The current and past rangers say this work is a great source of pride as it empowers them in the stewardship of their homeland.

It's easy to see why this region of the Amazon is called the Madre de Dios. The entire experience felt like a dream. The wildlife, people, hosts, food, guides, etc., were TOP NOTCH. You can tell there is a TON of work that goes on behind the scenes because to be in a place so remote and have everything flow so flawlessly can not be easy. However, the Jungles Keeper team made it feel that way. It was the perfect combination of scary but safe, nervous yet confident, lost but found... It is hard to understand until you see it with your own eyes, but I now know why so many others before me would refer to each aspect of this trip as if it were religious. The forest wasn't a forest, it was a cathedral. The monkeys weren't howling, they were singing in a choir, the butterflies weren't swarming, they were congregating. The entire rainforest was pure magic and I cannot wait to go back and share this special place with my friends and family. To Paul, Victor, George, Capitan Jose, and the entire Jungle Keeper/Alta Sanctuary Team, Thank you for the trip of a lifetime! ~ The Schultzes

This trip was the most fulfilling thing I have done in my entire life. I found out about Junglekeepers through the podcast space and knew that whatever I signed up for, whatever money it was going to cost, and time it would take... it was going to be used for something that truly matters to this planet. That is what I knew from just listening to Paul through earphones. But after spending a week in the jungle on this experience, I could feel in my soul just how important their mission is. It is something that can be felt so easily because of the quality and character of all the people involved along with the environment they are cultivating and protecting there. Whatever expectations I had going into this experience, were blown out of the water. The staff, the food, the wildlife, the facilities, the daily adventures... it is something I will never forget and will be longing for until I am able to return.

For a long time, I wanted to visit the Amazon Rainforest but didn't really know with whom to go. I'm glad that I found Tamandua Expeditions and went with them. William and Marcos did a very good job showing us the jungle, sharing their knowledge with us, and most importantly, making it fun and always having a great sense of humor. That, for me, really improved the whole experience. A big thank you to the whole team in general for making sure all of our needs were met, and thank you for preparing such good food for us.

My husband surprised me with this trip and I really didn’t know what to expect going in to it. It’s difficult to find the right words to sum up how amazing this trip turned out to be. Every person I came in contact with left me with a smile on my face. They welcome you like family, go out of their way to make sure your needs are met, and work hard to make your time at Alta Sanctuary unforgettable! I learned so much from our knowledgeable guides, and truly left a piece of my heart in the jungle! I hope to return with my family someday soon.

Went on the Operation Malinowski herping trip with Ian and William in March 2024. It was an amazing experience! They were both super knowledgeable and skilled at finding and handling the reptiles and amphibians that we found. I always felt safe, while still being able to admire the amazing animals that we found. Plus the accommodations were great, and food was amazing. Would definitely recommend the opportunity to enjoy the amazing ecosystem while supporting a great company!
