About this trip

The Central American country of Belize, located on the Yucatan Peninsula, is an emerging destination for North American birders because of its close proximity to the U.S., diverse cultures and food, and nearly 600 species of birds in an area the size of New Jersey. It also helps that Belize is an English-speaking country with the friendliest and most genuine people you will ever meet. Belize is such a magical place, and we want to share it with you. We’ve arranged the best local guides and tours, mixing birding trips to different habitats with cultural tours and boat trips. Check out the itinerary to get a day-by-day understanding of this amazing adventure!

Lodging

One of the beautiful aspects of this trip is the variety of accommodations we use, particularly when it comes to each place's setting. We will spend the first night at Black Orchid Resort, located near the airport and a great place to rejuvenate after a day of travel. We will then spend 3 nights at Black Rock Lodge, an eco-lodge along the Macal River at the edge of the jungle. Our next stop is for one night at Bird's Eye View Lodge in the village of Crooked Tree, before visiting Lamanai Outpost Lodge for our final two nights. At each place we will eat well, see beautiful birds, and relax in beautiful surroundings with comfortable accommodations.

COVID-19

Because we are traveling as a group, we require that anyone participating in this tour is up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters. We also encourage everyone to get their annual flu shots. All lodges that we stay at are Tourism Gold Standard for health and safety.

It was a fantastic trip. David is a very knowledgeable leader and shares so much information about not just the birds but all the aspects of appreciating being outdoors. He was such a good planner and could make quick changes when needed but always asking for our feedback . I did not know about that area of Indiana we visited but it was really a gem. Thank you.

This trip exceeded my expectations in so many ways. David shared his knowledge as a naturalist beyond birds to include plants, butterflies, dragonflies and damselflies! He knew where to go during each excursion to maximize the bird viewing, changed where weather dictated and was very patient and instructive in kayaking. We went to a couple of historic sites too that I didn’t expect. I have a new appreciation for Noble County wildlife and nature centers. David also made sure we went to interesting locations for meals out, not just fast food. The breakfast at the B and B was great. I will definitely book more trips with IndiGo Birding.

We loved this birding trip to Costa Rica with IndiGo Birding and Lifer Nature Tours. Inexperienced birders were welcomed, the length (9 nights) was just right, the eco-lodges were relaxing and retreat-like, and the meals were excellent. We were able to choose our own meals from the menus, which was very nice. Our guides, David Rupp, and local guide Jorge Gabriel Campos, were so knowledgeable , patient and flexible. The daily activities and locations were varied. We always felt well cared for! The amazing bird species and exotic animals were thrilling for us, as first time visitors to Costa Rica. Thank you to our guides and many new friends!

This was my second time birding in Costa Rica, truly a wonderful destination for beautiful birds and scenery, delicious food, comfortable lodges, and friendly people. Our guide Jorge and driver Raoul were exceptional and I would like to thank them, David Rupp of Indigobirding, and my travel companions for making this trip a true pleasure.

Our Belize trip was terrific. David is a talented leader and provided excellent lodges, the best local guides and a well paced group. He did a great job of reading the group and following our lead about the pace. There were options every day about how to participate. The integration of birding, the natural beauty of Belize and the Mayan ruins and culture made for a special trip. The local arrangements were seamless. After the trip a few of us stayed on to go to the ocean and he provided us with recommendations for that part of the trip as well.
