About this trip

The Central American country of Belize, located on the Yucatan Peninsula, is an emerging destination for North American birders because of its close proximity to the U.S., diverse cultures and food, and nearly 600 species of birds in an area the size of New Jersey. It also helps that Belize is an English-speaking country with the friendliest and most genuine people you will ever meet. Belize is such a magical place, and we want to share it with you. We’ve arranged the best local guides and tours, mixing birding trips to different habitats with cultural tours and boat trips. Check out the itinerary to get a day-by-day understanding of this amazing adventure!

Lodging

One of the beautiful aspects of this trip is the variety of accommodations we use, particularly when it comes to each place's setting. We will spend the first night at Black Orchid Resort, located near the airport and a great place to rejuvenate after a day of travel. We will then spend 3 nights at Black Rock Lodge, an eco-lodge along the Macal River at the edge of the jungle. Our next stop is for one night at Bird's Eye View Lodge in the village of Crooked Tree, before visiting Lamanai Outpost Lodge for our final two nights. At each place we will eat well, see beautiful birds, and relax in beautiful surroundings with comfortable accommodations.

COVID-19

Because we are traveling as a group, we require that anyone participating in this tour is up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters. We also encourage everyone to get their annual flu shots. All lodges that we stay at are Tourism Gold Standard for health and safety.

Our Belize trip was terrific. David is a talented leader and provided excellent lodges, the best local guides and a well paced group. He did a great job of reading the group and following our lead about the pace. There were options every day about how to participate. The integration of birding, the natural beauty of Belize and the Mayan ruins and culture made for a special trip. The local arrangements were seamless. After the trip a few of us stayed on to go to the ocean and he provided us with recommendations for that part of the trip as well.

Trip of a lifetime! Both my wife and I are novice "birders" so this trip was really perfect for us. The birding was fantastic and the cultural tours were amazing for us. David and the local guides were unbelievably good! Their knowledge and expertise was incredible. Accommodations were all amazing. Belize is a wonderful country and should be on your bucket list.

I’ve been birding with David for several years and I greatly admire his ability to identify birds in flight, as well as by their calls and songs. What impresses me most is that David knows all the hotspot habitats of different birds in Indiana. Each birding tour is like a treasure hunt. I always come home filled with awe, wonder and joy! Commonly, David emails us a list of birds we’ve seen during the tour. I’ve learned so much from him. It’s rare to have a birding guide who’s not only a naturalist and knowledgeable about birds, plants and trees, but also a highly skilled photographer and a dedicated conservationist. David is a very gifted birder. For me, he is a bird whisperer committed to helping us connect spiritually with our fellow feathered friends through knowledge and understanding. The Belize trip in February of 2024 was a trip of a lifetime. We saw or heard (mostly saw) over 180 species of birds within a week. It’s exhilarating to see so many gorgeous and exotic-looking colorful birds every day. Besides David, we had two very knowledgeable local guides who helped us identify birds and took us to Mayan sites to learn about the Mayan culture. The entire trip was very informative and well organized, as have been all previous birding trips that I’ve had with David. We had fantastic accommodations and food, which greatly enhanced our experience in Belize. I relish viewing David’s photos in the Google album that he created after the trip. The photos help me remember and reminisce about the wonderful time we had in Belize. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I highly recommend the trip to everyone. Bettina Hahn

An extraordinary adventure! The itinerary for the trip was incredibly well planned, and I can't imagine a better Belizean birding and cultural expedition. From the packing list to the introductory pre-trip Zoom call with everyone, to our first meal together as travel partners to the last round of Euchre played in the lodge's common area, traveling with Indigo Birding to Belize for the very first time was a spectacular (and worry-free!) time. I appreciated the pre-trip communication to help in preparation for my first international birding trip, as well as how literally every detail was taken care of by Indigo Birding. And, once on the trip, I loved the variety of lodgings and outings with local guides and experts. I truly cannot say enough good things about my experience (evident in the 100s of photos I have shared with everyone I know!). I highly HIGHLY recommend this trip to anyone with an interest in learning more about the country of Belize and its flora and fauna. The highlight for me was a three-night stay at Black Rock Lodge near the Guatemalan border. Not even three days of non-stop rain could make that place any less magical; I had to stop myself from bursting into tears upon arrival, that's how beautiful it is! Thank you, David, for such an amazing trip!

This was a delightful trip despite all the rain we experienced. Everyone in the group was easy to get along with. David is a delightful leader who planned an outstanding itinerary. Loved all the times spent on boats, and the cultural site visits (especially Xunantunich - not so much Lamanai), butterfly farm, zoo tour, and the chocolate factory (really terrific). We got excellent birds, and the night birding at Black Orchid and Lamanai was terrific. Ava was a delight to have along. My biggest complaint - the food portions served were way too big! I would travel with David again and would recommend him to anyone. And this from someone who has done one to several birding tours a year since 2006. *****
