About this trip

Welcome to your privately guided experience through remarkable Borneo and Indonesia.

Indonesia is a vast archipelago, containing over 17,000 islands and is crammed full of natural and cultural phenomena and this privately guided safari will take you to some of the very best highlights that the region has to offer.

After arriving and overnighting in bustling, colourful Jakarta, we take a short domestic flight to Yogyakarta, famed for its myriad of temples and cultural diversity. Here, we will explore Borobudur Temple at sunrise as well as both Prambanan and Ratu Boko Temples during sunset. Close by to Prambanan, in an open-air theatre, we'll enjoy a evening performance of the Ramayana Ballet, depicting the love-story between Rama and Sita.

And for something utterly unmissable in the area; we will descend the immense Jomblang Cave with its 'heaven's light'. It would also be a mistake if we didn't include a Street Food Tour of the famed Malioboro Market where on an evening a plethora of vendors open their kitchens, serving authentic Javanese cuisine.

From Yogyakarta, we travel to Bali where we meet our local guide and driver for the next chapter of the safari; ascending two of Indonesia's most famous volcanos - Mt Ijen and Mt. Bromo. After arriving in Denpasar, we travel by road towards Mt. Ijen and our rustic basecamp, close to the foot of the volcano, where we overnight.

We rise and start our assault on Ijen well before dawn, allowing us ample time to reach the summit whilst it's still dark to witness the eerie blue flames of the sulphur deposits. Then as the sun rises cascading glorious colours across the sky with the crater lake of Ijen shimmering with an alluring azure as the sulphur miners go about their daily arduous task of extracting the valuable mineral deposits.

After descending Ijen, we travel by road towards Mt. Bromo, passing through stunning countryside and colourful communities before reaching our basecamp nestled amongst the foothills of the slumbering volcano.

The next day, we rise early again well before the break of dawn to trek up the volcano and reaching the summit in time for daybreak as we watch the sunrise casting glorious colours across the jungle and volcano strewn horizon as far as the eye can see.

From Mt. Bromo we continue our journey by road to Surabaya where we overnight before embarking on the wildlife centric chapter of the safari.

From Surabaya we catch a local flight to the island of Flores, a real hidden gem with bountiful wildlife and exceptional natural beauty. Our home for the next three nights is Mbeliling Eco-lodge, which is nestled on the edge of a forest and conservation area and offers an excellent array of activities from hiking waterfalls, visits to the vibrant local Melo Community and birding aplenty. From our base at Flores we will spend the day exploring the Komodo Islands by boat where we will have opportunity to walk with the endemic and prehistoric Komodo dragons as well as swimming with manta-rays and exploring pink sandy beaches.

After three nights on Flores, we travel by local flight, via Surabaya to one of the world’s wildlife epicentres. Borneo.

The rainforests of Borneo are reputed to be over 140 million years old, making them at least twice the age of their antipodal cousin, the indomitable, Amazon - making the oldest forests on Earth. This might help to explain why such a staggering amount of diversity calls this region, home.

With well over 15,000 plants species, 720 bird species (of which at least 40 are endemic) and over 200 different mammal species (again, well over 40 are endemic) - which includes the magnificent Orangutang.

Our home for the next seven nights is at Rimba Eco-lodge, perched over the gently flowing Sekonyer River on the edge of the Tanjung Puting National Park. The lodge is remote and only accessible by traditional Klotok river boat. The lodge is truly fantastic and feels as though it is straight from a movie set and located in one of the few remaining places on Earth where Orangutang can be seen in the wild!

At Rimba, we’ll explore the surrounding forests by foot and by riverboat, hitting several Orangutang ‘hot-spots’ as well as visiting Camp Leaky - the site of the longest single biological experiment worldwide – a study of the release of orphan Orang-utans. The area is awash with brilliant birds and butterflies as well as several other primate species.

We will also enjoy night walks and boat cruises in search of nocturnal life such as owls, nightjars, glowing mushrooms, slow loris, tarantulas and potentially the rarely seen Tarsier, one of the world’s smallest primates. Also dinner whilst cruising the river is an option with the surrounding jungle lit up with millions of fireflies dancing in the Nipah Palms.

And for a better understanding of the people and history of the area, we will visit the HaraPan Village, who’s inhabitants originally lived in the national park itself. It is here that you will get a greater comprehension of the dreadful impact the palm oil industry has had and giving you a more in-depth appreciation of the plight of the Orang-utans through the mass destruction of their natural habitat.

Your safari is much more than travelling to places far and wild. It’s about immersing you in the environment, giving you the best, most intimate experience with every detail taken in to consideration. Reaching fantastic places, searching for beautiful and inspiring aspects of wildlife and the natural world. All are key to helping you capture more thought provoking images.
