Barrels and Fish Tales: A Slavonian Epicurean Expedition

Today, we bid farewell to Kutjevo and venture further into Continental Croatia. Our day begins with an exclusive visit to a cooperage specializing in crafting oak barrels for wineries and distilleries. We will discover the art of barrel production at Auric Barrels, where Slavonian oak, renowned globally, is meticulously transformed from “Tree to Barrel” from their own forests at their factory. Take a stroll through their production facility for an up-close look at the craftsmanship.

Following this immersive experience, we'll delight in the Croatian equivalent of a Fish Camp for lunch, relishing freshwater fish served family-style, sourced directly from nearby ponds. Our next destination is a beautifully renovated Habsburg Manor House in Slavonia, our home for the next two nights, blending historic charm with modern elegance.

Upon settling in, our exploration continues in Osijek, Eastern Croatia's cultural hub where we will take part in a city center tour featuring Tvrđa, one of Croatia's largest fortresses, and a deep dive into the heritage of General von Beckers. Along the mesmerizing river promenade, discover Picasso's influence, encounter the Bridge of Youth, and explore traces of Freemasonry. Conclude the day with free time, allowing you to explore or unwind as you please.

Day 5-Thursday, November 6th

Vineyard Reverie, Grilled Delights, Danube Views, and The Black Pig Feast

Today, our journey leads us to the intriguing Antunović Winery, boasting the most awarded wines in Croatia simultaneously, an achievement that aligns seamlessly with our pursuit of the extraordinary. What makes this winery even more exceptional is its distinction as the first in Croatia founded by a woman, the esteemed head winemaker, Jasna. In the enchanting company of Jasna, and her winemaking son Branimir, we'll embark on a wine tasting journey, where each sip promises to brighten the day, refresh the night, and create beautiful memories.

Embracing the joy of the unexpected, our lunch unfolds as a delightful surprise. Chefs Mike and Richard will display their culinary prowess, grilling delectable dishes over the fire at Brzica Winery. As we savor the flavors, we'll be treated to a panoramic view of the meandering Danube River, complemented by the winery's exquisite wine offerings.

After a brief retreat to the hotel for relaxation, we reconvene for the evening's grand finale at Restoran Crna Svinja. Named after the indigenous black pig breed thriving in the region since the 19th century, the restaurant promises a unique culinary experience. Here, The Blind Pig meets The Black Pig, and our day concludes with a celebration of gastronomic excellence and local heritage.

Excellent food and wine knowledge. Chef Gruica was a great guide. Chef Ricky Moore is amazing and curated a feeling of togetherness in a tour of what was primarily strangers. Over that week we became friends. Many stepped outside of their comfort zones and tried (and loved) food that they'd never before imagined. Croatia is beautiful! I look forward to the next food & wine (and Pepsi!) tour!!

This was not just any ordinary trip. It was a culinary adventure in a beautiful country with amazing people unlike anything we have ever experienced. Every day Chef Richard curated unique tasting experiences off the beaten path. His delicious collections blended the freshest local food from small wineries, local eateries, and farms in stunning surroundings. Every day presented unique activities exploring the real people and places that most tourists never see. I would have never imagined eating a spectacular meal in a charming winery that was prepared by the owner and his family or hunting for truffles out in the woods and having an al fresco dinner prepared right there at dusk. Day after day, the combination of food, wine, and activities was unique and different from the previous day. We absolutely will be returning for more tours with Chef Richard and definitely this Croatia tour is one of a kind and not to be missed!

I met 12 Fantastic people who have become friends and Richard was fantastic, well informed and not a "boring tour instructor". The buses that we had were extremely comfortable and classy. We were able to take our time at each spot which was important to me. Excellent time.
