Throughout the trip we will have the opportunity to dine at a wide variety of extraordinary restaurants (from casual street food to fine dining). While the tour offers many unique scheduled experiences, its casual structure also provides daily opportunities for travelers to adjust the plans to match their interests and desired speed and intensity.

IDENTIFICATION ~ A passport valid for 6 months beyond the tour start date and that has at least 4 blank pages for entry/exit stamps is required.
 

ALTITUDE ~ Cartagena: 35 ft    ~    Medellín: 5,000 ft    ~    Guatapé: 6,200 ft               

WEATHER ~ Coastal Cartagena’s July temperatures typically have a high of 95f and a low of 78f with chances of rain. Medellín, which is at a higher elevation, ranges from a high of 73f to a low of 54f. Expect frequent showers.

TRANSPORTATION ~ We use various modes of transportation including small regional commercial planes, vans, and taxis. There will also be an opportunity for a leisurely horse ride in the hills.
 

PHYSICAL EXERTION ~ Moderately High Exertion (3 of 5) – This tour consists mostly of moderately paced walking on city streets and sidewalks. However, due to the unavoidable hills and stairs, we’ve marked this a 3 rather than a 2 in exertion level. Irregular steps and uneven streets are common. There are opportunities for more strenuous hikes (including climbing over 700 steps up Peñol) for those looking for more challenges.

The departure day of this tour adjoins the arrival day of the Colombia ~ Cartagena, Medellín tour (26-07-07-CO-BOG), making it easy to combine the two trips. If you join both tours, we provide a flight from Cali to Cartagena and an extra night stay in Cartagena at no additional cost. Simply book both tours and we'll take care of combining the packages and reserving your extra night at the hotel.

Thursday – Travel/Arrival day to the beautiful Caribbean coastal town of Cartagena. Our welcome dinner is the only official tour event this day.

Friday – Full day exploring the art and culture of Cartagena with visits including Castillo San Felipe Barajas, The Palace of the Inquisition & the artsy Getsemani neighborhood.

Saturday – Spend the morning continuing to explore Cartagena before our late afternoon flight to Medellín.

Sunday – Tuesday – Full days in and around Medellín, with stops including Museo de Antioquia, Metropolitan Cathedral, and the artist neighborhood of Comuna 13. There is a day trip to the nearby town of Guatapé for a visit to La Piedra del Peñol, an amazing rock outcrop with over 700 steps to climb to reach the top. Travelers' options for the day include exploring the picturesque town, full of shops and restaurants; climbing the rock; (3) touring the lake and Peñol via helicopter or boat (both cost extra).

Wednesday – Travel / Departure Day from Medellín – no scheduled activities this day
