Kogis and Arhuaco people still live within the park and visitors can visit the ancient village of Pueblito while hiking around. There are over 180 species of mammals and over 300 species of birds living in the park, some of which can only be found in this area.
The Eco-Chic Bungalows are the ideal place to relax. Each bungalow is designed with a very distinct architectural feature that the indigenous from the area have been utilizing for hundreds of years…. the palm roof. Not only are these structures made from sustainably and locally harvested palm fronds, the vaulted ceiling design keeps the rooms cooler and more fresh than any other available, man-made material. There are now two African Safari tents available with real beds and shared bathrooms. The safari tents are surrounded by beautiful palm trees and have real beds and their own patio.
Let the soothing sounds of the ocean lull you to sleep after a full day on the beach and exploring the area. The simple, clean and comfortable rooms are equipped with full private bathrooms, outdoor showers*, fans*, down pillows and plush sheets and towels.
*In order to maintain our sustainable and low energy consumption practices, the resort does not have A/C (Air Conditioning) in the rooms, and our showers at Gitana del Mar do not have hot water.
The Gitana kitchen is focused around a fresh, sea to table approach that combines healthy ingredients together in a coastal themed, fusion-style menu with Colombian, Mediterranean and Asian flavors. In addition to local and regional fish, seafood, and chicken, our rotating menu also features unique vegetarian and vegan offerings. Gitana is passionate about supporting the community and using the most local ingredients available, including fruit, veggies and herbs from our own gardens and fresh-caught fish and seafood from our regional fisherman.
Tropical juices are one of the most spectacular culinary stars of Colombia, which is why we honor and serve them here daily. Our plethora of seasonal fruits includes: Passion Fruit, Star fruit, Guava, Lulo, Mango, Pineapple, etc. Each of our daily meals features a fresh juice or infused water.
The four existing indigenous tribes (Kogi, Wiwa, Arhuaco and Kankuamo people) are ancestors of the pre-Hispanic Civilization, known as the Tayrona. They still practice and follow the Tayrona belief of “Aluna”, which is the belief that all reality is created by thought. Every object or being has both a spiritual aspect and a physical reality, both of which originate in thought. These people have been calling the Sierra Nevada Mountains their home for hundreds of years.
They refer to this area as “The Heart of the World” because they believe that what happens in the Sierra Nevada also happens everywhere in the world. They are committed to restoring the equilibrium to Earth by daily ritual practices, mental discipline and meditations. All of their efforts are to help protect the Sierra Nevada and the world from destruction. They have plenty to protect, including multiple ecosystems, such as: wetlands, mangroves, tropical rain forests, desert, alpine tundra and finally reaching snow capped mountains at the summit.
Through all these varied ecosystems, thousands of species of plants and animals have been identified, including dozens of which can only be found here. For example, almost 630 different bird species have been identified here, more than the US and Canada combined. Many rivers also flow from the mountains, including three large ones that empty the some of the freshest water in the world right onto our beaches. These stunning rivers are all within a 15 minute drive from the property and provide fun adventures, calming fresh water and breathtaking vistas.

Monica Munguia
Monica is a certified 500-hour teacher from the U.S. with over 600-hours of training. Drawn to yoga off and on since 1997, it was ultimately the thing that helped Monica to find more freedom, and it continues to do so. After attending a yoga retreat in Nicaragua in 2014, she realized how unhappy she was and how disconnected she had become from herself and what she truly wanted. She then began the process of change and left her job, relationship, country, and the societally approved path to follow her heart and pursue her lifelong dream of living abroad.
As such, she believes yoga is a tool of transformation that helps us move beyond the past, social conditioning, unconscious habit patterns, limiting beliefs, and our small separate sense of self in order to rediscover our true nature. It's her life's work to share this with others as she believes that to change the world we must start with ourselves, and as we reconnect with ourselves, we reconnect with others and the planet for the ultimate benefit of all.
A former scientist and one time wilderness therapy field guide, she brings her scientific mind and sense of adventure to her teaching. Monica is currently excited to incorporate into her sessions her studies in Yoga Nidra, polyvagal theory, and the intersection of yoga, mindfulness, neuroscience, and embodiment.
