La Sierra Mixe es uno de los territorios indígenas más aislados y mejor preservados de México — y también uno de los menos visitados.

Este recorrido comienza en la cocina de Regina en Ayutla, donde participamos en el ritual del Machucado: una ofrenda a la tierra y un desayuno preparado sobre leña con maíz molido en metate. Continuamos en Tlahuitoltepec con una visita a la maestra alfarera y a la familia Gutiérrez en su taller textil — artesanos altamente reconocidos de la región.

El segundo día nos adentramos en la remota comunidad de Santa María Huitepec, donde desayunamos en casa de Juanita Elizondo, curandera local. Caminamos por el orquideario comunitario, el bosque de niebla y las ruinas del Pueblo Viejo hasta llegar a una cascada escondida. Cerramos con una comida en la granja de truchas Los Cedros antes de regresar a Oaxaca.

Your two-day itinerary

The Sierra Mixe is one of Mexico’s most isolated and best-preserved indigenous territories—and also one of the least visited.

This visit begins in Regina’s kitchen in Ayutla, where we participate in the Machucado ritual: an offering to mother earth and a breakfast prepared over a wood fire with corn ground on a metate.

We continue to Tlahuitoltepec with a visit to the master potter and the Gutiérrez family in their textile workshop—highly renowned artisans of the region.

On the second day, we venture into the remote community of Santa María Huitepec, where we have breakfast at the home of Juanita Elizondo, a local healer.

We hike through the community orchid garden, the cloud forest, and the ruins of Pueblo Viejo until we reach a hidden waterfall. We conclude with lunch at the Los Cedros trout farm before returning to Oaxaca.

En la comunidad de Ayutla visitaremos la cocina de Regina Domínguez, una cocinera tradicional que nos preparará un desayuno ritual conocido como machucado. 

Para comenzar haremos una ofrenda de mezcal a la madre tierra. Después podremos observar todo el proceso de preparación de este platillo e incluso podremos aprender a usar el “metate” o molino tradicional de maíz.

In the community of Ayutla, we will visit the kitchen of Regina Domínguez, a traditional cook who will prepare a ritual breakfast known as machucado.

To begin, we will make an offering of mezcal to mother earth. Afterward, we will observe the entire preparation process of this dish and even learn how to use the metate, or traditional corn mill.

En Tlahuitoltepec conoceremos la casa y taller de una mujer alfarera con más de cuarenta años de experiencia creando piezas decorativas y utilitarias. Ella nos hará una demostración de su habilidad y además tendremos la oportunidad de crear una pieza nosotros mismos. 

In Tlahuitoltepec, we'll visit the home and workshop of a female potter with over forty years of experience creating decorative and utilitarian pieces. She'll demonstrate her skill, and we'll also have the opportunity to create a piece ourselves.

Después visitaremos el taller de la familia Gutiérrez, donde tendremos la oportunidad de conocer a detalle los procesos de teñido, elaboración de telas y rebozos, así como la confección de las prendas tradicionales que han puesto en alto el arte textil de Tlahuitoltepec. Tendremos la oportunidad de adquirir las creaciones de estos artesanos y así contribuir con el bienestar de sus familias. 

Afterwards, we will visit the Gutiérrez family workshop, where we will have the opportunity to learn in detail about the dyeing processes, the making of fabrics and shawls, as well as the creation of the traditional garments that have brought renown to the textile art of Tlahuitoltepec. We will have the opportunity to purchase the creations of these artisans and thus contribute to the well-being of their families.

Para la comida probaremos más de la cocina mixe en la casa de una familia local, antes de tomar el camino de regreso a la ciudad de Oaxaca.  

For lunch we will sample more Mixe cuisine at the home of a local family, before making our way back to the city of Oaxaca.

En el segundo día de nuestro recorrido por la Sierra Mixe, tendremos la oportunidad de visitar la tranquila y remota comunidad de Santa María Huitepec.

On the second day of your visit through the Sierra Mixe, we will have the opportunity to visit the quiet and remote community of Santa María Huitepec.

Comenzamos el día con un desayuno en casa de Juanita Elizondo, una curandera local que prepara alimentos nutritivos, así como remedios curativos hechos con plantas nativas de la región.

We start the day with breakfast at the home of Juanita Elizondo, a local healer who prepares nutritious food, as well as healing remedies made with native plants from the region.

Realizaremos una caminata de nivel medio que comenzará en el orquideario comunitario y continúa por el Cañón de la Niebla y las ruinas del Pueblo Viejo, culminando en una cascada escondida donde podremos darnos un refrescante chapuzón en sus aguas cristalinas.

We will take a moderate-level hike that will begin at the community orchid garden and continue through the Cañón de la Niebla and the ruins of Pueblo Viejo, culminating in a hidden waterfall where we can take a refreshing dip in its crystal-clear waters.

Al regresar al pueblo, disfrutaremos de una comida en la granja de truchas Los Cedros, un restaurante familiar administrado por la familia Jiménez. Un lugar genuino con sabores propios de la sierra.

Upon returning to the village, we'll enjoy a meal at Los Cedros trout farm, a family-run restaurant managed by the Jiménez family. A truly authentic place with flavors typical of the mountains.
