Costa Rica Focus was excellent to work with for our Costa Rica trip. Communication was excellent, everything was dealt with in a very timely manner and our guide, Fito, was excellent. Our lodgings were great as were the various food locations we stopped at during our travels. Would highly recommend this company to work with and I would use them again for travel.

We had a fantastic guide, Carlos Cruz. He worked so hard to find the birds and kept in mind those species which we had particularly wanted. His approach showed his love of birds and profound understanding of their behavior. He was also a brilliant driver through horrendous rush hour traffic! He was always organised and let us know exactly where we were going and what we were doing. We were so glad that he was a Tico as we learned so much about Costa Rica in general from him.
The accommodation for our trip was an excellent standard although three days at Rancho Naturalista was too long. Their feeders were disappointing, which seemed to be the general opinion of those we dined with, but their meals were great, especially in catering for Greg's coeliac condition.
We would have loved another night at Quelitales. By the time we arrived we had only two hours of daylight and as we had to leave at 4.30am for the long drive to SJ there was not much time for birding in a beautiful environment that we very much wanted to explore. Also this was the first accommodation including our Tropical birding Tour which had sufficient light to see properly in the rooms, for which we were very thankful as we did our final pack up there.
A big thank you to Jess for organising our trip. She always responded quickly to any questions and had some valuable suggestions. We loved our prior nights at Hotel Bougainvillea which she arranged.
We will definitely use Costa Rica Focus for our next trip.

Another incredible trip with Costa Rica Focus. Last year we did Costa Rica and this year was Peru. What an experience! Jess catered to our every choice and the trip was exactly how we wanted it to be. Juan was a fountain of knowledge and enthusiasm. We will book our tours with him again if we can. We had an absolutely outstanding experience with Costa Rica Focus, and I can’t recommend them highly enough.
From the very beginning, they took the time to truly understand our interests, budget, and travel style, and crafted a customized itinerary that exceeded every expectation. This was our first birding trip to Costa Rica, and they struck the perfect balance between independent exploration and guided birding tours.
The diversity of experiences was incredible—we added over 160 species to our life list in just about a week! Every location felt thoughtfully chosen, but the cloud forest in particular was unforgettable. It was such a magical, immersive environment that made us fall in love with Costa Rica in a way we hadn’t anticipated.
A special shoutout to Jess, who was absolutely amazing throughout the entire process. She was incredibly communicative, responsive, and highly organized, which made everything feel seamless from start to finish. The WhatsApp group they set up provided around-the-clock support, ensuring that any questions or last-minute details were addressed immediately. That level of care made it so easy for us to fully relax and just enjoy the experience.
What really set this trip apart was the quality across every detail. The birding guides were exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate, helping us spot and identify species we would have completely missed on our own. The driver and transportation were seamless and comfortable, and every hotel, meal, and activity surpassed our expectations.
Everything felt effortless, well-coordinated, and personalized. I am so glad I chose Costa Rica Focus for this trip. They created truly a memorable experience for my family.

This was our first experience with Costa Rica Focus and we can confidently say that all our expectations were surpassed! From the start, they created a custom itinerary that was tailored to our wishes. Everything on our trip was meticulously organized so that all we had to do was pack and enjoy. Their attention to detail meant every transfer, drive, accommodation, meal and tour went off without a hitch. They were on-call 24 hours a day to answer any questions we had and answered within minutes. They even anticipated a road closure the night before a transfer and changed the drive time accordingly. When one of our vehicles had a mechanical problem, a switch to another vehicle was organized before we even knew there was an issue.
In a week, we managed to add 200 new birds to our life list, as well as many mammals, reptiles and amphibians. We would not have seen a fraction of these without the incredible local guides that were not only knowledgeable, friendly and flexible but also very professional.
We are already starting to think about our next trip with Costa Rica Focus. We highly recommend this company!
