Day 1
Arrive in San Jose, Costa Rica
Welcome to Costa Rica! We will meet you at the San Jose International Airport. Your private transfer will take you North (3.5 hours) to the spectacular Arenal Volcano area. You’ll leave the city behind and find yourselves traveling through small towns and rolling green hills, through the cloud forest of San Ramon, to the Caribbean.

We had the best guide, Jorge, and superb driver, Edgar for our birding trip in Ecuador through Costa Rica Focus. Joan and Wanda answered all our questions before and during the trip. Our birding lodges were outstanding.
The Galápagos extension was well worth it. Will use this company again.

This was a dream trip I was looking forward to for over 20 years. It was perfect. Everything went off with out a hitch. The accommodations and the food were fantastic. Our drivers were wonderful (Mario, Eddy and Serge). So kind, on time and accommodating for all our needs and requests. The guides were so over the top great. They knew everything. The trip was way beyond expectations. I can’t stop looking at all the great pictures of birds we saw. I can’t think of one negative.
Costa Rica is such a wonderful country.

This was our first dedicated birding/photography trip. It was thoroughly enjoyable. Our guide Mayer was both fun and informative – he had a wealth of knowledge, not only about birds, but also, about Costa Rican history, geography and culture.
The hotels and food were very good even in the remote areas we visited.
Everything worked like clockwork from initial booking through pickup and up to departure.
We will be back!

Joan and Wanda did a wonderful job of arranging a trip that accommodated our desires to see wildlife and nature while respecting my husband’s walking limitations.
We had a personal driver/guide, Carlos. He was sensitive to my husband’s needs and was an enthusiastic and energetic birder and overall wildlife spotter! He would suddenly make a turn and take us down a lonely road, peer out the windows, then stop, jump out, grab the spotting scope, and tell us to look! A sloth! An owl! A Motmot! Scarlet Macaws in a dead palm tree! A Gartered Trogon! Parrots! Kingfisher! A Tucán! Carlos would carefully use a laser pointer to indicate the branch we needed to look at, and patiently wait for us to fumble with our binoculars as we searched for what he saw with the naked eye. He held our cell phones (and my tablet!) over the lens of the scope and we took pictures and videos! Wonderful.
We left a favorite jacket at one of our resorts and it was too difficult to get it back while we were in the country. Carlos diligently pestered housekeeping until they found it, then Joan worked on the shipping, which was more than we paid for the jacket new. So she offered to bring it with her, back to the US when she comes back herself, and mail it to us from the US!
Amazing service and kindness and sensitivity. I highly recommend CF.

I had another fantastic experience travelling with Costa Rica Focus. This was my second trip with them and I was not disappointed. The guide, Alex Castro, was phenominal!!! He was very knowledgable about birds, biology, and the history of Costa Rica and was always available to assist us. The food and lodging were excellent and we saw many incredible birds. Chicho drove on this trip and on the last trip I took. He is the best driver, very safe and professional. He is also a great birder.
