      About this trip

In July 2022, we will embark on a ten day Conservation Expedition to South Africa focusing on Endangered Species.

We will spend three days at The Care For Wild Rhino Sanctuary, a highly specialized Rhino care facility. The Rhino population in South Africa continues to decline due to poaching and the demand for bogus medicines made from rhino horn. Many of these devastating poaching incidents have left behind young, defenseless, orphaned calves. This Centre is closed to the public, so we are very lucky to be able to observe the sanctuary in action with those who work tirelessly to rehabilitate, re-wild, release, and protect rhinos.

In 2015 I visited Eco-Training at Pridelands Game Reserve. I learnt to how to track animals, how to walk among African Bushlands gently, and be one with the bush. Their Wildlife programs are designed for nature lovers, whether you intend to pursue a career in conservation or simply love being in the bush. Our time at Pridelands & Karongwe Game Reserve will be all about wildlife & outdoor adventure, spending the day on foot or on open safari vehicles, where we will get up close & personal with wildlife targeting Lions, Cheetahs, Leopards and Elephants.

On this Endangered Species Expedition, we are fortunate enough to be spending two days, working side by side, with an unsung hero of Wild Dog conservation. Grant Beverley is a carnivore expert who works for The Endangered Wildlife Trust. He works tirelessly to conserve these wonderful animals, and to help save them from extinction

On our last day we will join Eco-Training again at Karongwe Game Reserve to assist with the protection of a White Rhino. We will spend the day with a wildlife veterinarian safe guarding the future of one White Rhino. Our group will sponsor the dehorning of a White Rhino, an exclusive experience.

      Itinerary

      Day 1 - 13 July
      Welcome to South Africa

Meet at Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Mbombela.

We aim to depart at 12h30 so if you are unable to arrive before this time we recommend you fly in a day earlier and overnight at an airport hotel which we can arrange for you.

Catch a one hour shuttle to The Rhino Sanctuary in the heart of the Mphumalanga to meet Rhino Rehabilitator Petronel Nieuwoudt. Petronel founded Care For The Wild in 2001 due to the drastic increase in the number of rhino poaching incidents within South Africa, resulting in orphan rhinos needing a specialized sanctuary which would rehabilitate and eventually, release them back into the wild.

Care for Wild is also home to many different animal and plant species. The reserve, together with surrounding areas, are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains contain the best-preserved, oldest and most diverse sequence of known volcanic and sedimentary rocks on Earth.

Our home for the next 3 nights is Care for Wild.

It was a wonderful trip with the company of amazing people. We came in as strangers and left as friends. The sites, venues we visited was amazing and the leads did an amazing job modifying the trip to accompany people’s state of health.

I had a great time. Anna is a great organizer and a lovely person. I got to know a lot of ladies, had great conversations, all the while walking in the beautiful lake district. I loved it and will want to join another of Anna’s trips in the future.
