About this trip

Travel by car to the Kuang Si Falls and visit a Hmong village in the morning. After lunch in an elephant camp, the Mekong cruise to the Pak Ou Caves with a stop to taste rice whiskey and explore a cave. Return to Luang Prabang by boat with a beautiful sunset view from the water. Our best seller guided door-to-door package!

We will pick you up at your accommodation between 7:45 – 8:15 am. This adventure destination package takes you to Kuang Si Waterfall with time to explore the three-layered Kuang Si Waterfall, walk the nature preserve trails, swim in the refreshing turquoise pools of water, and visit the Bear Rescue Center.

Then drive for an afternoon boat cruise. We stop at Ban Na Uan, a Hmong village where you have the chance to experience Hmong village life, meet some of the local people and see the makings of their traditional embroidery crafts. We visit Manifa elephant camp for lunch and enjoy a buffet-style lunch @ the restaurant – overlooking the Mekong river and free-roaming elephants.

Around 14:30, we take a long tail slow boat to trip on the mighty Mekong river. Enjoy the many views from the water, witness rural Laos, pass by local villages, fishers, and children and soak up the scenes of daily life by the river. Our boat travels slowly along the Mekong to the glorious Pak Ou Caves. We arrive at a small boat landing dock where stairs lead you straight to the cave. This limestone Buddhist cave has been a place of worship for thousands of years. During this time, collections of Buddha images and idols filled this spiritual cave.

After visiting the caves, the boat will enter the Ou River to see the limestone cliffs. Back on the Mekong River again., we go down the river a 30-minute and a bit. The boat stops at the Ban Xang Hai, also known as ‘the whiskey village’. Here you visit the village, see the process of making Lao Lao, the country’s beloved rice whiskey, and taste the fresh local delights. Why not pick up a couple of bottles for later!

Depart from Ban Xang Hai from 16 pm to 16:30 pm and slowly return to Luang Prabang for an hour and a half to two hours. You can see the beautiful sunset from the boat. We will get to Luang Prabang between 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm – drop-off location is at the post office on the main street, near the night market, or at your accommodation by prior arrangement or on request.

There are different versions of this tour. The other version includes a Mekong River cruise in the morning and a visit to the waterfalls in the afternoon. The mornings in Luang Prabang are often cloudy and rainy in the rainy season, and winters are cold, so the alternative version may be better for swimming at the waterfalls. However, the morning boat trip is likely to be cloudy.

Loved our experience and the guide was informative.

We had the best time. Our elephant leader giving us the initial talk was so knowledgeable and passionate. The mahouts were lovely and took so many brilliant photos and videos that we will treasure forever. The elephants are clearly well loved and cared for. The food was fantastic also and all the staff were great including for the kayaking.
This was an excellent experience, with the opportunity to ride an elephant humanely (on his shoulders with no Howda). Lunch was delicious. Just make sure you ask what is happening next as we felt communication was a little lacking! It didn’t spoil the day though

Quite a long journey but really worth the effort. The plain of jars was a really amazing place. Really friendly people and great extra trips like the silk farm. Guide and driver were excellent and always intresting food to try along the way. The guest house we stayed at during our trip was very good.
