About this trip

Travel by car to the Kuang Si Falls and visit a Hmong village in the morning. After lunch in an elephant camp, the Mekong cruise to the Pak Ou Caves with a stop to taste rice whiskey and explore a cave. Return to Luang Prabang by boat with a beautiful sunset view from the water. Our best seller guided door-to-door package!

We will pick you up at your accommodation between 7:45 – 8:15 am. This adventure destination package takes you to Kuang Si Waterfall with time to explore the three-layered Kuang Si Waterfall, walk the nature preserve trails, swim in the refreshing turquoise pools of water, and visit the Bear Rescue Center.

Then drive for an afternoon boat cruise. We stop at Ban Na Uan, a Hmong village where you have the chance to experience Hmong village life, meet some of the local people and see the makings of their traditional embroidery crafts. We visit Manifa elephant camp for lunch and enjoy a buffet-style lunch @ the restaurant – overlooking the Mekong river and free-roaming elephants.

Around 14:30, we take a long tail slow boat to trip on the mighty Mekong river. Enjoy the many views from the water, witness rural Laos, pass by local villages, fishers, and children and soak up the scenes of daily life by the river. Our boat travels slowly along the Mekong to the glorious Pak Ou Caves. We arrive at a small boat landing dock where stairs lead you straight to the cave. This limestone Buddhist cave has been a place of worship for thousands of years. During this time, collections of Buddha images and idols filled this spiritual cave.

After visiting the caves, the boat will enter the Ou River to see the limestone cliffs. Back on the Mekong River again., we go down the river a 30-minute and a bit. The boat stops at the Ban Xang Hai, also known as ‘the whiskey village’. Here you visit the village, see the process of making Lao Lao, the country’s beloved rice whiskey, and taste the fresh local delights. Why not pick up a couple of bottles for later!

Depart from Ban Xang Hai from 16 pm to 16:30 pm and slowly return to Luang Prabang for an hour and a half to two hours. You can see the beautiful sunset from the boat. We will get to Luang Prabang between 5:30 pm – 6:00 pm – drop-off location is at the post office on the main street, near the night market, or at your accommodation by prior arrangement or on request.

There are different versions of this tour. The other version includes a Mekong River cruise in the morning and a visit to the waterfalls in the afternoon. The mornings in Luang Prabang are often cloudy and rainy in the rainy season, and winters are cold, so the alternative version may be better for swimming at the waterfalls. However, the morning boat trip is likely to be cloudy.

Reviews

We really enjoyed the experience. The highlight was the elephant experience getting up close (and riding bareback) to the elephants and spending time with them. We also learned about the history of elephants in Laos and how endangered they now are. Manifa seems to be doing a very good job caring for the 13 elephants in their compound. Our tour guide, Van (sp?), was patient and looked out for us throughout the entire tour. We switched to the kayaking, Pak Ou cave, Whiskey Village, and sunset cruise the day before - We Travel was responsive and accommodating. I would highly recommend this trip when visiting Luang Prabang.

I visited Laos from Japan on a solo trip. The main purpose of my trip was to have a great experience with Manifa Travel. They let me experience things here that I cannot experience in Japan. I was surprised that the elephants were much bigger than I had imagined and their skin was harder as well. I will never forget this wonderful experience. Thank you very much for the fun memories!

I had a great experience to ride a elephant. Riding elephants are very tough than horses because they don't have a chair on the elephants. I was exhausted but great. Almost people join the cave tour etc after lunch, but I resumed riding. I learned some languages to talk to elephants, and I rode an elephant by myself without support. (but, instructor walked beside of me & elephant) If you have time to spend in Luang Prabang, I recommend resuming riding after lunch.
