      About this trip

One of Mexico's most vibrant states, Oaxaca oozes with rich flavor, both literally and figuratively.

Our days will be filled with exploring Oaxaca City and the surrounding areas including the Zapotec ruins of Monte Albán, the vast agave fields, family-run mezcalerias, and enchanting mountain towns home to artisans, craftsmen, and healers. This trip also has the option to add on an additional 4 day/3 night excursion visiting Oaxaca's Pacific Coast in Puerto Escondido!

View the detailed itinerary for this trip here.

From small batches of smoky artisanal mezcal to complex moles, Oaxaca is a food and spirit lovers' playground. The delight to the senses is endless, you can find yourself sitting on the edge of a turquoise water pool, looking out at the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua by morning, and later conclude your evening by joining a celebratory street parade!

There's never a dull moment in Oaxaca, especially during Día de Muertos. While Oaxaca is one of México's more economically challenged states, it is rich in culture, resilience, and creativity. Not to mention beautiful Zapotec weavings as well as impressive pottery and artwork - so shoppers make sure to bring an extra suitcase to take your goodies home!

We will also get you off the beaten path by visiting women-led small businesses outside of Central Oaxaca to learn more about them, how micro-financing loans work and sustainable models for micro-financing. Lastly, we will eat A LOT of delicious food, sip on mezcal, join in parades, see amazing art, stroll through the Zócalo and have an overall amazing time. Additionally, we'll be staying at the stunning Hotel Casa Sierra Azul centrally located in the heart of Oaxaca, so you'll be able to explore at your own leisure without having to go far!

The Heart of Travel was born out of a deep-rooted love and passion for travel, art, history, food, nature, culture and adventure as well as a call to give back to the communities and people that had already provided us with so much. The travel industry has long been bombarded with double decker tour busses, beach front resorts and cruise ships, often at the expense of the local communities. As a response to this failing system, we began a boutique travel company that allows clients to explore new places in an authentic and non-touristy way, offering travelers a more intimate and unique experience all while removing the stress and hassle of researching, planning, bargain hunting, reserving and more that goes along with planning a trip or vacation.

Peru is a country of many different types of terrain and experiences. Dune buggy rides in the sand dunes, boating to the floating islands on lake Titicaca, visiting the salt mountains and, of course, hiking up to Manchu Picchu gave us a great sample of what the country has to offer. The cities are also full of friendly people and lively activities and, with the help of our wonderful guides, Eimy and Wilmer, we were able to enjoy our adventures even more! Emmy was so very helpful in recovering a phone lost by one of our fellow travelers and Wilmer was one of the best local guides we’ve ever had. It’s a “not to be missed trip” if you can make it and certainly one of my best.

It has taken me a while to write this but I wanted to tell everyone what a great trip we had. The highlights for me were the “fairy forest” with the incredible collection of orchids, the fun times at the coffee plantation and making chocolate bars at the incredible site of the farm. The colorful town of Guatape and the lodgings on the lake were also some of the incredible sites. Lots of other fun things too numerous to mention and, of course, all made easy by our great HoT guides, Pam and Eimy. The local guides are always so knowledgeable and informative some are and even stand-comics! I highly recommend this trip for anyone who is interested in seeing what Colombia has become.

The Heart of Travel team was exceptional. Arrangements were confirmed and drivers were always where we expected to find them. Made travels to Guatemala comfortable and relaxing.

I just returned from a two week trip to Ecuador and the Galapagos. The trip was an incredible balance of learning, discovery, and recreation. Both the local guides and the Heart of Travel coordinator, Chiva, were excellent!!! The accommodations, food, and itinerary were fantastic. I will definitely travel with Heart of Travel again.

I just completed the Oaxaca 2022 Did de Muertos Trip with Heart of Travel and it was amazing. Such a surreal and gratifying experience. Learned so much in regards to the culture and celebrations and customs of the local people and enjoyed learning about their traditions. Heart of Travel made this entire experience so enjoyable and well rounded with cultural immersion experiences. Great accommodation choices and knowledgeable local guides. Their use of local guides to share their knowledge and love for their traditions and home is a great learning experience. I have partake in several of their trips and would highly recommend not only this trip but any they have to offer. They defintiley take care of you. Would travel with them again!!

I’ve just returned home from 17 days on Heart of Travel’s first fabulous trip to Spain. We visited Barcelona, Granada, Malaga, Seville, and Madrid— not to mention side trips to the smaller towns of Ronda and Cordoba. Chelsea and Pam amazed me daily! Their ability to research artsy boutique hotels, small family owned businesses for us to experience, along with their attention to detail and ability to respond to glitches was impressive. I loved going into two homes for cooking classes with delightful women. Our guided tour through Sagrada Familia was a highlight as was spending time in Parque Guell in a Barcelona. I thoroughly enjoyed our kayak outing and would have liked to have done a city bike tour for a bit of variety and exercise too! We saw amazing citadels, mosques, cathedrals, and a bullring. Thank you ladies for organizing a wonderful tour and helping to create a “family” of fellow travelers.
