      About this trip

      “Emancipate yourself

      from mental slavery”

      ~Robert Nesta Marley

Jamaica was home to some of the earliest rebellions against the British slave trade. Maroon settlements dotted the Island as Arawaks and enslaved Africans - many of them of Muslim origins - freed themselves from bondage. They leaned heavily on African culture and religious expression to liberate themselves internally and externally. Rastafarianism grew from these roots, flourishing in cultural and musical expression.  But it is not widely known that much of the foundation for Afro-Caribbean roots and culture came from West African Muslims. During this retreat we will explore together the historical, spiritual, and musical connections linking Jamaica, Africa, and Islam.

We’ll visit Kingston Central Masjid mosque, pray in peace, remember Allah, and enjoy an exquisite eight-course farm-to-table meal at Stush in the Bush organic farm. You’ll also have the opportunity to take in Jamaica’s unspoiled nature and swim in breathtaking waterfalls, beaches, and lagoons. We’ll hike up the famous Blue Mountains, where we’ll visit one of the island’s oldest Rasta communities and dissolve all ignorant misconceptions about the island and its proud people.

This won’t be about all-day tanning, beachside braids, and gift shop Rasta hats (not that there’s anything wrong with that); we just want to rejuvenate you in a different way. After all, we travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us, right? We want to share the glory, struggles, and beauty of this island- a BEAST of an island, as you will find out!

For the past ten years, I've been traveling solo. While the freedom is nice, it can get quite boring and lonely at times. Eventually, you start craving some company. I discovered Burgundy Roots through an Instagram post and followed their trips for over a year before finally deciding to reach out and book one. I'm so glad I did! I chose the Zanzibar trip and it was an amazing experience. Burgundy Roots has created a fun and safe space for Muslims to travel, especially for Muslim women. The itinerary was perfect, and it was clear that Wafa (Host and organizer) put a lot of effort into making sure everyone was happy. I don't think I can travel solo anymore—I'll save my vacation time to travel with Burgundy Roots from now on. I'm an active person, and the trip was packed with activities, along with free time to do my own thing. I even tried jet skiing and skydiving for the first time! I met wonderful people on this trip who I plan to stay in touch with for years to come. The trip also allows you to interact with the local population and even give back if you're able, though there's no pressure. This was by far the most fun trip I've ever taken. I would recommend Burgundy Roots to solo travelers, couples, families, and even the elderly. I’m already planning to book another trip with some family members. Thank you, Burgundy Roots, for such an incredible and affordable experience. 10/10!

I loved the variety: the southeast coast (paje beach), the north (nungwi) and the stone town :). The hotels were very clean, comfy and also boujee. I love how Wafa selects restaurants, and places/sites which supports the locals. Not only does it feel good that we are doing vacation but also investing in local business. The food was so fresh and organic. I felt my health become better. I tried and saw many NEW things such as star fruit, passion fruit, holding and seeing new breeds of monkeys, kite surfing, seeing low and high tide of a beachetc. I got to buy and bring back such quality spices as zanzibar has amazinggg spices and is known for it. People overall were quite friendly and polite. Wafa is also very kind and you can go have open convos with her.

This trip was truly magical. Everything about it was thought through and it was curated to perfection. Wafa went above and beyond to ensure that the trip was enjoyable for everyone. She really does care about every aspect of the trip and people in the group. Wafa is so attentive and always makes an effort to provide comfort and a memorable experience for all. This was my first trip with Burgundy roots and will certainly not be the last. The whole travel experience was second to none; from the group of people to the accommodation, food, service, and communication. I couldn’t have asked for more. Burgundy roots has exceeded my expectations.

I traveled with Wafa to do the Umrah... That was such a good experience. This trip is definitely the best by far. She is so professional and a nice person. I definitely recommend it to everyone who wants an experience that could change their life in a good way, bring more love in their heart, a closer connection with God and the chance to meet extraordinary people.

I have been on two Burgundy roots trips so far and I must say, the itineraries are very well thought out. Wafa and her team pay attention to every detail and leave no stone unturned to ensure a truly unique, hands-off and stress-free experience for all attendees. You get to visit some hidden gems , spend time in nature, enjoy delicious food with amazing COMPANY and learn more about Islam while you’re at it. Such a beautiful, spiritually uplifting experience!
