      About this trip

      “Emancipate yourself

      from mental slavery”

      ~Robert Nesta Marley

Jamaica was home to some of the earliest rebellions against the British slave trade. Maroon settlements dotted the Island as Arawaks and enslaved Africans - many of them of Muslim origins - freed themselves from bondage. They leaned heavily on African culture and religious expression to liberate themselves internally and externally. Rastafarianism grew from these roots, flourishing in cultural and musical expression.  But it is not widely known that much of the foundation for Afro-Caribbean roots and culture came from West African Muslims. During this retreat we will explore together the historical, spiritual, and musical connections linking Jamaica, Africa, and Islam.

We’ll visit Kingston Central Masjid mosque, pray in peace, remember Allah, and enjoy an exquisite eight-course farm-to-table meal at Stush in the Bush organic farm. You’ll also have the opportunity to take in Jamaica’s unspoiled nature and swim in breathtaking waterfalls, beaches, and lagoons. We’ll hike up the famous Blue Mountains, where we’ll visit one of the island’s oldest Rasta communities and dissolve all ignorant misconceptions about the island and its proud people.

This won’t be about all-day tanning, beachside braids, and gift shop Rasta hats (not that there’s anything wrong with that); we just want to rejuvenate you in a different way. After all, we travel not to escape life, but for life not to escape us, right? We want to share the glory, struggles, and beauty of this island- a BEAST of an island, as you will find out!

It was my first solo tour and had been eyeing out burgundy roots trips for a while and decided to take the plunge with the Morocco Madness trip as part of my bucket list destination. The 8 day trip was spectacular- the locations, hotels all had a unique and breathtaking view of the city and beach. Wafa and the team curated an experience that catered for all types of travellers from nature loving to historians. Every single detail was thought through. Moreover BR attracts such amazing people and I thoroughly enjoyed all the wonderful souls on the trip to share this experience making connections with people all over the world for life. Highly recommend booking with Burgundy roots!

This was such a beautifully curated trip with staff who were professional yet extremely kind and personable. This trip for me was one that was satisfying to the soul as last year I completed breast cancer treatment & I decided that it was time for my first International trip & I decided I would try Burgundy roots ! I am not disappointed I felt very well taken care of throughout & that they were able to help us navigate the places we were for the expected and unexpected. I will never forget the trip and think a piece of my heart is still in Morocco. Blessed to have come and experienced the love and beauty I did on this trip. InshaAllah I will go on another adventure with them again !

Morocco is an amazing country with a rich history and culture of unmatched hospitality. Our journey started in Casablanca where we were met by the BR Team (Wafa, Mohammad & Khadijah) who thoughtfully curated our experience every step of the way with stunning hotels (centrally located, near markets & beach front) alongside trips through the cities historical heritage and the incomparable Hassan II mosque (a must see if you love architecture)! This trip also was blessed with really beautiful people making our travel collegial and travel companions a comfort away from home. The second leg of the trip was to Chefchaouen, the ride was comfortable, we were able to see Morocco's beautiful country side and breathtaking tapestry. From our local guide to the adventures we had in and out of the Medina/Souks/rooftop restaurants all was worth it and memorable. The blue city is not only charming but has some of the hands down delicious food we experienced on this trip. The breakfast at Dar Jasmine is still on my mind and on a shortlist of amazing meals I have had while traveling. On the way to FEZ/Fes we stopped at Mausoleum of Moulay Idriss, a descendant of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) & the first ruler of Morocco another must visit for all who love history and our beloved. What cant I say about FEZ/Fes (the city of Saints) and the beautiful Riyadh Yacout we stayed at for the rest of our trip. The staff, service and meals were incredible. They went out of their way to serve and accommodate, our BR Team planned activity and tours through the historical city and chose excellent restaurants only followed by great locations for us to independently explore the city. As a New Yorker I really loved the souk, it was vibrant, busy and filled with goodies to purchase and or explore. Between the planned activities (tours, cooking class and hikes) we also found lots of local events (Sufi festival, Friday Prayers, Ahmed Tijani's Tomb, art classes, oud lessons & more). This city is vibrant and full of kindhearted people who make you want to return again and again. Morocco has sooooo much to offer, we only scratched the surface. Well done BR Team, I enjoyed the vision you had for us and its execution, I also appreciate the flexibility and grace extended when needed. May Allah continue to bless you all and make every voyage as pleasurable as this one.

Alhamdulilah what an amazing trip! I knew I liked Morocco but with this trip, I loved Morocco. The welcoming people and the wonderful host, Wafa made it into such a memorable trip. The hotel and riads were something else. In Fez, the riad was right near the market and in Chefchoun, the hotel was so high, you could see the blue city in all its beauty. The Burgundy Roots team (Wafa, Khatija, and Mohamed) really made our trip comfortable. There were no hidden fees. Any extra costs were discussed prior to the trip and the assistants were always available to answer any questions. You can ask Wafa, I ask a ton of questions. :) This is my second trip with Burgundy Roots and looking forward to booking future trips with them. :) (Tip for Fez, if you have free time, book a shopping tour guide with the manager of your riad. :) )

I traveled with Wafa to do the Umrah... That was such a good experience. This trip is definitely the best by far. She is so professional and a nice person. I definitely recommend it to everyone who wants an experience that could change their life in a good way, bring more love in their heart, a closer connection with God and the chance to meet extraordinary people.

I have been on two Burgundy roots trips so far and I must say, the itineraries are very well thought out. Wafa and her team pay attention to every detail and leave no stone unturned to ensure a truly unique, hands-off and stress-free experience for all attendees. You get to visit some hidden gems , spend time in nature, enjoy delicious food with amazing COMPANY and learn more about Islam while you’re at it. Such a beautiful, spiritually uplifting experience! BEST TRIP(S) EVER!
