The morning will be spent at the Akwasidae Festival, which is one of the most important events in the Ashanti calendar. This festival, occurring every 42 days, is a celebration of the Ashanti people's rich history, traditions, and their paramount chief, the Asantehene, who is currently, Otumfuo Nana Osei Tutu II.
Akwasidae is a time for the Ashanti people to honour their ancestors, seek blessings for the community & pay homage to the Asantehene. The celebration involves traditional rites, spiritual ceremonies & colourful cultural displays.
The Asantehene, dressed in rich regalia, receives homage from sub-chiefs & the general public. This is a spectacular event filled with traditional music, dance & vibrant displays of the Ashanti culture.
After lunch, you will visit Bonwire Kente Weaving Centre, where you can try your hand at weaving or purchase beautifully crafted cloths. This is where the popular Kente cloth originates. Kente is a local cloth made in strips of different patterns, colours & designs. It is then sewn together to make clothing, which is worn at special occasions, e.g. Weddings, Festivals, Naming Ceremonies; plus the enstoolment of Kings, Queens & Chiefs.
